I almost hope Doris gets it - the investigation into his statements in HoC will surely cause so much trouble he'd have to resign again and lead to a successful vote of no confidence in the govt. But, the risk would be that the committee's findings are suppressed or lead to insignificant sanctions. In that event I will take to the streets with a pitchfork.

At least if Boris is back, we all know what the arguments in support of him will be.

But Jeremy

At least he knows what a woman is.

Agree that investigation is going to be damning. I can't believe the Tories would risk it...but then I can barely believe what's happened in the last 6 weeks so I guess we just watch and wait..

Some good news - Braverman may never see her dream come true unless she flies the plane herself:

I feel so angry and betrayed at the thought of that man getting back power. I feel like JRM et al are rubbing their hands in glee and laughing at the foolish plebs.

EsmaCannonball · 21/10/2022 14:05

Kemi Badenoch is another one where I don't think the Tories are seeing what the public is seeing. She's like an Apprentice contestant who sees herself as the lovechild of Steve Jobs and Margaret Thatcher but who gets fired after failing to convince Pets At Home that ear-muffs for gerbils are the next big thing.

There's nobody putting themselves forward who I wouldn't find problematic in some unacceptable way. Tbh, I feel the same way about politicians in all the parties: there's hardly anybody statesmanlike in any of them. As it's the Tories, and expectations are low, I would be prepared to overlook a tiny bit of awfulness for someone who projects at least 50% competence, but there's not even that.

Cornettoninja · 21/10/2022 14:05

I feel like JRM

That’s the fucker I’d really like to see out on his arse. I really, truly hate him.

L1ttledrummergirl · 21/10/2022 14:37

I've just watched last night's question time. For mainly conservative audience they were pretty pissed off with affairs.

I think the tories are in worse trouble than the polls are showing and more of the same won't cut it.

The sane members need to take back the party now with a change of guard or accept that the party is over and resign the whip.

Notonthestairs · 21/10/2022 14:59

"The sane members need to take back the party now with a change of guard or accept that the party is over and resign the whip."

I'd like to know who these sane people are. I'm not being sarcastic. Conservatives have had some of the most significant & thoughtful politicians of our time - where are they now? Did we lose a generation of them due to Brexit? Obviously Gauke, Grieve & Stewart either left or were removed. Who is left?

tobee · 21/10/2022 15:00

I've just realised what it is the Tories will be doing with Johnson. From the relationship threads: hysterical bonding

Notonthestairs · 21/10/2022 15:02

NEW: Sources close to Privileges Committee say evidence is so damning that Boris Johnson could be 'gone by Christmas' if he returns.

One Tory MP tells me any attempt to kill the inquiry could 'bring down the govt'.

Yet momentum builds behind Johnson.

'Friend of Liz Truss' quoted in The Times: "She’s relieved if anything. She won’t stand down as an MP but she needs a holiday.”

Tone deaf.

Maybe she can take over Johnson's Caribbean villa (bound to be owned by a friendly donor)

Downnotdown · 21/10/2022 15:46

I'm keeping an eye on Guido Fawkes spreadsheet of how the MPs are voting. It's interesting to see the vast majority of the anonymous votes (whips, party board members, Tory vice chairs and 1922 chairmen) are going to Boris.

Of that lot, so far Sunak has 1 vote, Mordaunt has 3 and Boris has 17. Oh dear 😒

cowards Angry

Notonthestairs · 21/10/2022 16:46

Beth Rigby has the tally at
68 Sunak, 36 Johnson, 17 Mordaunt.

Notonthestairs · 21/10/2022 16:48

I'm assuming Rigby is discounting anonymous supporters.

tobee · 21/10/2022 16:51

Hmm

I seem to say that a lot these days

tobee · 21/10/2022 17:08

Pro Johnson will obviously over inflate Johnson support so people can jump on the bandwagon. As Tories don't understand why your first idea would be anything other than back a winner. This is what definitely happened with Truss.

The media (not just the Tory press) love a Boris Johnson comeback story to fill the airtime and create the clicks.

Yes there is definitely an attempt to inflate his numbers.
Truss benefited hugely from the apparent lead during the summer.

Security experts and democracy campaigners raise fears over wild west Conservative leadership election if it goes to members, reports Josiah Mortimer

Asked if he thought the Conservative party’s online members’ ballot could be fully safe and secure, Cyber security expert Prof Ian Brown, formerly Principal Scientific Officer at the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, put it simply: “No.”
