Exclusive

Tory leadership hopefuls are expected to need the support of 100 Tory MPs to run

That's five times more than summer when 20 MPs were needed to get on ballot

Means only 3 MPs can run. Rules being finalised now. Story w/ @christopherhope

I’m composing an email to my MP. He’s a total chocolate fireguard, but he did reply when I contacted him previously about the Cummings/Barnard Castle incident. It won’t change anything but at least he will know how this Conservative voter feels and it may be fed back to someone who gives a shit about how the wind blows with Conservative voters.

StarryGazeyEyes · 20/10/2022 17:24

I thought Brady seemed to be hinting that a single candidate would emerge - can't see how they could possibly go to the membership and complete before the 31st, so high threshold much more likely.

itsgettingweird · 20/10/2022 17:25

Oh dear.

So so many conservatives repeating "Johnson is the one with the mandate from the people"

They really do think he can come back and all is forgiven.

And we're back to "he got the big decisions right" and "he's not perfect but he's human".

I find it most insulting they try and gaslight people into thinking his poor behaviour is normal and we'd all do it.

Saucery · 20/10/2022 17:31

If they bring him back as a figurehead and make him Blaff-blaff-wahhhh! to please his fans while a cabinet who are largely in touching distance of competency get on with calming the markets and making us less of a laughing stock to the rest of the world then by all means, bring the bastard back. He loathes hard work, he’s happy to be steered by anyone as long as he doesn’t have to shift himself. The last thing we need is another Truss thinking they can reinvent the wheel and fucking it up more.
But I don’t hold out much hope, on past performance.

jgw1 · 20/10/2022 17:33

Govey, Govey, Govey.

Notonthestairs · 20/10/2022 17:36

So 100 nominations required.
Busy weekend doing deals for Conservative bigwigs.

Saucery · 20/10/2022 17:37

Govey’s skeletons are rattling far too loudly for him to be a good choice. We need Boring, Uninspired, Old Skool Tory. Possibly with a wardrobe full of grey clothing, nothing flash, nothing to frighten the horses.

ClaudineClare · 20/10/2022 17:37

Who will be the three? Sunak, Mordaunt and...

Notonthestairs · 20/10/2022 17:39

Gullis? Grin

I really don't know.

itsgettingweird · 20/10/2022 17:44

I'd like Tugenhat back in the race

Fladdermus · 20/10/2022 17:48

Mordaunt is another one who terrifies me. There's so much anger and hatred bubbling inside her. She was so aggressive at the Urgent Question the other day. Not a shred of humility in her, just pure arrogance.

Ben Wallace would be good for the manufacturers of weapons and planes to drop them on people from……would certainly please a huge proportion of his constituents whose livelihoods depend on those businesses and supporting businesses. Doubt he wants to be the next Aunt Sally the ERG throw balls at, however.

itsgettingweird · 20/10/2022 17:53

What happens if no one can get 100 votes?

the80sweregreat · 20/10/2022 17:54

They all terrify me to be honest.
Arrogant and self serving . All of them

Notonthestairs · 20/10/2022 17:56

itsgettingweird · 20/10/2022 17:53

What happens if no one can get 100 votes?

They'd have to call an election!!

Not really, I guess they would have to lower the nominations required. It would all get a bit sticky especially if Johnson hadn't missed by much. We'd be back to Betrayed Johnson drivel.

itsgettingweird · 20/10/2022 17:56

Someone is playing the Benny Hill theme tune outside Westminster where they are interviewing the conservative 🤣🤣🤣

Piggywaspushed · 20/10/2022 18:08

Apparently if the 100 mark isn't reached there is some online vote amongst members.

Blossomtoes · 20/10/2022 18:14

Piggywaspushed · 20/10/2022 18:08

Apparently if the 100 mark isn't reached there is some online vote amongst members.

Those are two separate issues. The threshold to be on the ballot is 100 nominations. The last two will go to an online membership vote unless one f them drops out.

Piggywaspushed · 20/10/2022 18:17

Oh yes, sorry. My head is so confuzzled.

Fladdermus · 20/10/2022 18:23

That'll be Steve Bray.

A question. I think the Tories can't avoid a massive cull at the next election. Let's assume the most extreme predictions come about and about 40 Tories get elected next time. Destination of the party, basically.

How will this change the Tory Party? Will it turn them into a sensible, moderate centre-right party?

Or will it permanently turn them into a bunch of UKIP-style loons, meaning that's the right-wing option in the UK forever?

I've heard Nadhim Zahawi owns stables, so he is probably good with horses, and unlikely to frighten them, unless he has to pay for their heating of course.

Steve Bray, its a regular feature of life on College Green, there will be a video on twitter soon.

Saucery · 20/10/2022 18:32

Depends on why those 40 seats were kept. Traditional and centrist Tories whose constituents like because they feel they have the needs of the constituents at heart v factors that make people vote for UKIP type policies.
