Sounds like we’ll get the formal rules of the leadership contest around 5:30pm. 1922 executive and Conservative Party board will agree this afternoon.

This is worth watching (and signing?) even just to see how fast the numbers are going up again.
petition.parliament.uk/petitions/619781
I'm wondering how many millions would need to sign it before they HAD to take notice of it ( or maybe I am being naive?).

I've no idea either but Thank you for sharing. I have now signed & shared.

I have also just written to my (Tory) MP expressing my disgust.
I said that I thought any decent Tory would join the calls for a General Election.
I said that I didn't expect that would happen, so I will never vote Tory again.
(I didn't before but I am guessing he cannot check that...)

The only other time I've ever written to an MP before was my previous one, during Covid, to express my frustration at the lack of promised internet connection for rural disadvantaged disabled kids. The promised laptop never turned up of course, nor did the dongle even. My kids lost many months of teaching as their Academy school didn't even pretend to run education even for kids like mine who 'qualified'. The MP (Anne-marie Trevelyan) didn't even reply.

the80sweregreat · 20/10/2022 16:15

People still like Boris Johnson though
There is a lady on lbc now saying he should come back.

the80sweregreat · 20/10/2022 16:17

My MP was sky news last night saying that Ms Truss would be leading them into the next GE
Nobody tells him anything clearly!!

54isanopendoor · 20/10/2022 16:17

ClaudineClare · 20/10/2022 15:57

Maybe all this was a set up. Get Truss in. Wait for her to fuck up spectacularly, pave the way for Johnson Season 2.

I've been saying that to my kids for weeks now.
I even wondered if Johnson & Truss had agreed it beforehand.
She got a shot at glory (& was too vain to realise how short it would be & a good pension) he then charges in, like the bloody cavalry (in his own delusional mind).

the80sweregreat · 20/10/2022 16:19

Some of the people on lbc are totally deluded about Boris Johnson

itsgettingweird · 20/10/2022 16:30

I was chatting my my friend this morning on our walk.

She was keen for Johnson to return as she thinks they should never have gotten rid of him.

She agrees with what he's done but despite agreeing on everything else politically apart from parties we vote for (we have very similar views and are both very centrist but she votes right). She could see my view that someone who breaks the law and lies isn't what's best to govern 68 million people.

Yet she still thinks it would have been better to keep him in.

It seems mostly because it would have avoided this rather than because he's any good. Confused

Notonthestairs · 20/10/2022 16:31

Worth considering this could be exactly the end game Boris Johnson had in mind when he endorsed a weak candidate he could see would quickly and irredeemably fail.
Whilst it may look like a shambles from the outside, it might just have been playbook politics…

Emily Maitlis reflecting similar views to those expressed here previously.

From the Guardian:

The Liberal Democrats say the Conservative party should block Boris Johnson from standing again. In a statement the Lib Dem deputy leader Daisy Cooper said:

The fact that Conservative MPs are even considering putting Boris Johnson back in Number 10 shows how out of touch they really are. They think there’s one rule for them and another for everyone else.
Boris Johnson was forced to resign in disgrace after countless lies, scandals and failures. He shattered public trust in the government and plunged the UK into a political crisis. He must never be allowed near Downing Street again.

Really Boris had to resign because of a left wing media tofu eating woke campaign about some cake.

If everyone just ate more cake peacefully it would be so much better.

I agree with previous posters who said the online petitions are a bit of a sop that government doesn't take seriously, however I'm also wondering whether there would be a critical mass of signatures where the media pressure would increase to the extent the'd have to take it seriously. Worth signing in my view as it only takes a minute and maybe if ENOUGH people do it?? Not sure what the voting population of the UK is but surely if several million people signed it?
Writing to mp is also good especially if yours is Tory. Mine is Labour and would I'm sure agree with a general election but doesn't have any influence to make it happen.

InMySpareTime · 20/10/2022 16:36

Unfortunately my MP is Graham Brady, so there's no point asking him to back a GE.

L1ttledrummergirl · 20/10/2022 16:38

Mine doesn't know if she is a tory or not after yesterday...

the80sweregreat · 20/10/2022 16:39

My MP liked Boris Johnson and Ms Truss , so little point writing to him.

Fladdermus · 20/10/2022 16:39

Fladdermus will be going in hiding Grin

A Big Dog made me do it.

The new line from Boris Johnson supporters is ;
' only a few of his back benchers wants him out , not the people '

Fladdermus · 20/10/2022 16:39

A Big Dog made me do it.

Are you Carrie in disguise?!

Notonthestairs · 20/10/2022 16:43

"So much depends on 1922 rules

There's one version (low minimum MP threshold to get on ballot, last 2 goes to members) that see Boris Johnson getting through & becoming PM again

Alternatively high MP threshold and/or less member involvement keeps him out

How likely a stitchup?"

twitter.com/samcoatessky/status/1583120894607904769?s=46&t=q4QlptdSP4BxrojpqAmMfQ

I think this is key. Whatever mechanism they decide on this afternoon will decide the vote next week.

54isanopendoor · 20/10/2022 16:45

That's very interesting @Notonthestairs - so we might be able to predict today?

itsgettingweird · 20/10/2022 16:45

Mines Braverman.

Absolutely no point emailing her about normal mundane stuff.

Let alone about this.

Although I think I'd just type. "Good riddance - now if you could resign / be sacked locally you'll make my year!"

Notonthestairs · 20/10/2022 16:47

If I were Sunak I'd wait to see what conditions there are to go on the ballot before announcing.

Going head to head with Johnson won't work in my opinion - not with the members voting.

The Telegraph & Daily Mail WILL run those stories about his wife, green card status and the nonsense about him being a socialist all over again (whilst neatly overlooking the fact that Johnson was PM and signed off those budgets). Dacre is probably writing the headlines as I type.

DowningStreetParty · 20/10/2022 16:50

There’s a few general election petitions coming round - the Indy and the Mirror. There’s a parliamentary petition one too

PeakersCorner · 20/10/2022 16:55

I’ve tweeted my MP to ask why they are trying to get our second unelected PM in two months into power instead of calling for a general election. Who do the Tories think they are?! Fool me once etc

DuncinToffee · 20/10/2022 17:01

Fladdermus · 20/10/2022 16:39

A Big Dog made me do it.

Are you typing that from under the desk or from a fridge?

Notonthestairs · 20/10/2022 17:04

Several reports now that the threshold will be set at 100 which should be enough to see off Boris. Sunak the only one guaranteed to get that number.

Notonthestairs · 20/10/2022 17:08

Witnesses who are working with the Privileges Committee tell me there are no shortage of people willing to testify against Boris Johnson. Risk is that they become even more determined if he returns as PM, which could make the whole fiasco much more embarrassing for the party.

twitter.com/paulbranditv/status/1583127572463771649?s=46&t=q4QlptdSP4BxrojpqAmMfQ

Maybe I'm coming round to the idea after all...
