Can we all start saying “Queen Camilla” now and not “Queen Consort” every time.

The BBC particularly are driving me loopy with it.

It isn’t the traditional way to refer to a consort. It was emphasised as part of the “make Camilla acceptable” campaign, but that’s over now.

No, because she isn't a queen. Consort is actually the proper and traditional title for the spouse of a hereditary king or queen.

FromageRouge · 03/10/2022 13:15

She is a Queen, she just isn’t a Queen Regnant.

We could just call her Camilla? That’s her name 🤷‍♀️.

The last Queen Consort was Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother).

Im having a quick Google and it seems at the time nobody referred to her as “the Queen consort”.

Even the BBC’s history page calls her “Queen Elizabeth”;

That would do me. 😁

Eventually she'll just be The Queen - it's just a bit soon after a Queen regnant.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 03/10/2022 13:18

I think you need to give it a bit of time, our much loved Queen has barely been buried. I'm sure before long they'll drop either the consort part or the Queen part.

I don't think it'll ever be the King & Camilla. Charles & Camilla, yes. The King & Consort or the King & Queen yep.

@BigWoollyJumpers Personally I don't think the technical difference is something they'll make a point of day to day. The King & Queen Consort is just too much of a mouthful IMO

lightand · 03/10/2022 13:19

Camilla fine.

Queen Camilla not fine.

Queen consort. A bit wordy I agree, but better than other alternatives.

EdithWeston · 03/10/2022 13:19

Yes, I think you can if you wish.

Because Penny Mordaunt, during the Proclamation at the meeting of the Privy Council, referred to her as 'The Queen' and I don't think you get much more formal and correct than that

I hope they hurry up. The endless repetition of it is grating my ears.

It feels a bit pointed too. We all remember the history and the PR, but now we are where we are.

If King Charles dies and Prince William becomes King, would Queen Camilla no longer be Queen Camilla?
Queen Elizabeth II Mother obviously started to be called The Queen Mother, so I was just curious with Camilla not being Williams Mother.

She would be the Queen Dowager. I doubt they’d use “Queen Mother” this time because, well, she wouldn’t be.

Thank you, I've never heard of The Dowager Queen.
I'll look it up now.

Well quite.

I can see why Clarence House and Buckingham Palace are still sticking to their “consort” emphasis (if this is coming from them). It took two decades to make Camilla acceptable. But seemingly Westminster can get it right and so should the BBC.

I'm still calling the king "Charles" not "King Charles".
Takes time to move on after a death.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/10/2022 13:26

It's all a bit sexist that King trumps Queen so if we have a (true) Queen and her husband is the Prince Consort then we should have a King and a Princess Consort.

Naming her Queen Consort just exacerbates the ranking of male above female.

Or just "The King"

CaptainBarbosa · 03/10/2022 13:28

For now I think they will continue to report her as Queen Consort for the next 12-24 or so months to give time for The Queen as in ERII memory to fade a little, and everyone to get used to having a King.

Then she will just be The Queen and in The King and Queen

When Charles dies and if Camilla is left I think they will refer to her as Camilla Doweger Duchess of (something) as she's not Williams mother obviously. Be a tricky one though to decide what to call her....

Although female consorts get to be Queens and make consorts (like Philip and Albert) only get to be Princes so there are compensations, but yes they should iron that out as they did with female succession.

Iirc, the Queen Mother was so-called after the death of George VI because her name was also Elizabeth - and it would have been confusing to have two Queen Elizabeths. And probably not very respectful to call her the "Old Queen Elizabeth", or something similar.

I agree that the "consort" bit should be dropped now - it seems overly-prissy and is making more of an issue of the "history" than is needed. Times have moved on. She's the Queen whether people like it or not.

No. She'll be The Queen even if she outlives Charles.

@lightand why is Queen Camilla not fine?
