Can we all start saying “Queen Camilla” now and not “Queen Consort” every time.

The BBC particularly are driving me loopy with it.

It isn’t the traditional way to refer to a consort. It was emphasised as part of the “make Camilla acceptable” campaign, but that’s over now.

Oh gawd. Everyone will listing their personally acceptable royals with their pronouns soon.

So will Kate be known as the Queen Consort when William becomes king?

JenniferBarkley · 03/10/2022 15:02

Under normal circumstances, Kate would instantly become Queen Catherine the moment William becomes King (assuming they're still married).

Camilla did instantly become Queen Camilla but it seems they're using the Consort title in a similar way to the way she used Duchess of Cornwall rather than Princess of Wales - it avoids the confusion between Queen Elizabeth and Queen Camilla because in truth "The Queen" will mean QEII for most of us for a while, and it's also a sop to the Diana crazies as it makes her feel like less than a full queen. Hmm

No one ever calls for Saint Kate's titles to be reduced in the same way.

I've only ever heard the term dowager used to designate a widowed Duchess, who becomes the Dowager Duchess of X because she doesn't lose her title by dint of her husband dying.

Camilla is being referred to as Queen Consort because 1. it's correct and 2. despite moving on to calling the late queen "Queen Elizabeth" when we all just knew her as "the Queen" people need time to get used to there being a new queen.

I agree OP, just call them the King and Queen and have done with it. The misplaced "loyalty" to a woman who died tragically 25 years ago and was never going to be queen is ridiculous.

LetMeSpeak · 03/10/2022 15:04

she isn’t a queen to me. I wouldn’t stress over it OP

Imissmoominmama · 03/10/2022 15:04

I’m pretty sure I read that Philip refused the title of King. And I did read that Queen Elizabeth said that it was her wish that Camilla became Queen Consort.

It’s so cute when people think they get a say.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/10/2022 15:10

I think In the minds if most people there will only ever be 'The Queen' as in Elizabeth. So understandable that she's either revered too as Queen consort or by her name.

My DMum has lived during the reigns of 5 monarchs and during that time there have been 4 Queens (one regnant, 3 consort)

She's not quite old enough for it to have been 5 Queens, as Queen Alexandra died in 1925

Well yes she IS Queen Consort. Charles is King Regnant, but they don’t keep calling him that.

Sorry attached the wrong quote!

It was meant to be in response to think In the minds of most people there will only ever be 'The Queen' as in Elizabeth

Anyone who can remember 1952 (so age about 74?) will remember Queen (Consort) Elizabeth before she was widowed, and Queen Mary was also still alive at ERII's Accession (famous photo of the Three Queens at George VI's funeral)

SenecaFallsRedux · 03/10/2022 15:20

Prince Philip never refused the title of king because he was never offered it. He wasn't even made Prince Consort as Albert was.

paintitallover · 03/10/2022 15:21

No , OP, we can't.

Why not? Is it a protest?

Something to do with him being a foreign royal, as was Albert.

Karatema · 03/10/2022 15:37

Nope. She's Queen Consort.

MenopauseSucks · 03/10/2022 15:38

I think it's prudent to call Camilla 'Queen Consort' for a bit.
For most of us, the Queen is still Queen Elizabeth II.
Camilla's public rehabilitation has been lengthy & carefully managed so it could be a wise move to call her Queen Consort until at least after the coronation.

It's a slow day but I've worked out, thanks to Wikipedia...
In the 185 years since Queen Victoria ascended the throne in 1837, there has been a Queen Regina for 134 years.
A quick calculation later...
That's 72% of the timeShock
I knew QV & QEII were exceptional women but wow! That's a lot of time with female monarchs.

BabbleBee · 03/10/2022 15:42

Queen is one of those words that the more you look at it, the more odd it becomes.

Much like the monarchy in general Grin

This is the first time a mistress and divorcee who isn’t the mother of the next in line has come to the title of Queen Consort. Maybe it is just new?

Divorced, no, but widowed yes, and she was just Queen Catherine (last wife of Henry VIII.

To say nothing of Ann Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves and Catherine Howard. Then there's the knotty issue of the accession of King William III and Queen Mary II when technically James II was still king ...

LearnerCook · 03/10/2022 15:45

Yes, the sooner that 'Queen Camilla' becomes every day speak the better. And the BBC can hardly say anything about Queen Consort being the formal title when they happily used 'Princess Diana, incorrectly for years.

Yes. Good point.

I think that’s it - and it’s probably the same for her. And for the rest of the Royal Family. I suspect once she’s crowned Queen and there’s been a bit more time, people will start to refer to “the King and Queen” and “Queen Camilla”. But “Her Majesty the Queen” has been QEII for such a long time that I suspect they might retain the “Queen Consort” moniker in formal situations just to avoid confusion.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 03/10/2022 15:55

I'll not be using either, should I have any occasion to refer to her it'll be Camilla.
But the consort business seems silly.

Christmascaroll · 03/10/2022 15:56

If King Charles dies and Prince William becomes King, would Queen Camilla no longer be Queen Camilla?
Queen Elizabeth II Mother obviously started to be called The Queen Mother, so I was just curious with Camilla not being Williams Mother.

If Charles dies first she will just become Queen Camilla.
Queen Elizabeth became known as The Queen Mum as there was 3 Queen's alive at the time. Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Elizabeth II
