Can we all start saying “Queen Camilla” now and not “Queen Consort” every time.

The BBC particularly are driving me loopy with it.

It isn’t the traditional way to refer to a consort. It was emphasised as part of the “make Camilla acceptable” campaign, but that’s over now.

Agreed

Women mocking another woman's looks? Classy.

FromageRouge · 03/10/2022 16:24

Whichever PP said “sop to the Diana crazies” might have had a point.

Prince Philip never refused the title of king because he was never offered it. He wasn't even made Prince Consort as Albert was.

Exactly. Neither prince had that entitlement!

Under normal circumstances, Kate would instantly become Queen Catherine the moment William becomes King (assuming they're still married).

Camilla did instantly become Queen Camilla but it seems they're using the Consort title in a similar way to the way she used Duchess of Cornwall rather than Princess of Wales - it avoids the confusion between Queen Elizabeth and Queen Camilla because in truth "The Queen" will mean QEII for most of us for a while, and it's also a sop to the Diana crazies as it makes her feel like less than a full queen. Hmm

No one ever calls for Saint Kate's titles to be reduced in the same way.

She's not controversial. No saint. That's all.

AsterixInEngland · 03/10/2022 18:06

If Camilla should be called Queen, why has the Duke of Edinburg never been called King? 😵‍💫😵‍💫

Sexism. Women are naturally lower, a king is higher than a queen, so the husband can't take the higher role when his wife is the queen regnant.

I will never call her queen and that's my choice, as far as I know we still live in a democracy

Nothing cute about being a patronising arse

No, because she isn't a queen. Consort is actually the proper and traditional title for the spouse of a hereditary king or queen.

She is a Queen. Consort is her role.
All previous Queens have been known as the Queen, or Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, Queen Alexandra, for example.
As pp have said, it's just not using "the Queen" so soon after QE2.

TokyoTen · 03/10/2022 18:56

Sure Camilla or Queen Consort is fine - she isn't actually a Queen.

I agree that she would be the Dowager Queen officially. Maybe she would go back to being the Dowager Duchess of Cornwall, or some other Dowager version of a title that she holds or has held? One European monarchy that has, I think, a retired (abdicated) Queen, now called Princess so-and-so (sorry wasn't paying proper attention when reading that article) but this wouldn't be appropriate in this case probably? Tricky but I bet they have a plan.

That's the Dutch royal family. Princess Beatrix was Queen Beatrix until she abdicated in 2013. Her son is now the King.

I like this approach.

From now on, I'm going to refuse to acknowledge that Liz Truss is prime minister, that I weigh nearly 12 stone and that it's raining.

Why was Elizabeth bowes Lyon the queen mother and not the dowager queen then?

So why didn't Prince Phillip become King Phillip when Elizabeth became Queen?
Just curious

JenniferBarkley · 03/10/2022 20:19

Because sexism. There's only one type of King, but two types of Queen - Regnant (the monarch a la Elizabeth II) and Consort (the spouse a la Camilla, Elizabeth the Queen mother, Kate some day).

Imissmoominmama · 03/10/2022 20:22

He refused the title, I believe.

WeAreTheHeroes · 03/10/2022 20:25

When a female in the royal bloodline marries, her husband is not eligible to take the male form of his wife’s title, as Marlene Koenig, a royal historian and writer of the Royal Musings blog, told Town and Country. That’s why Princess Eugenie’s husband, Jack Brooksbank, remained “Mr. Jack Brooksbank” when they got married in October 2018.

From the Reader's Digest website.

Philip renounced his claim to other thrones in order to marry Elizabeth and was only made prince in 1957.

Why was Elizabeth bowes Lyon the queen mother and not the dowager queen then?

I seem to remember that she chose “Queen Mother” over the more usual “dowager” just because she preferred it. I think she was formally known as “Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother”. Otherwise it would have been “Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Dowager”. Maybe she’d have been less bothered if they didn’t have to specify it every time to differentiate her from her daughter?

OP posts:
SenecaFallsRedux · 03/10/2022 21:31

There was also another queen dowager, Queen Mary. So Elizabeth needed a title that would be different. In the royal household she was referred to simply as Queen Elizabeth and her daughter as the Queen.

generalh · 03/10/2022 21:33

Call her Cami.

Twillow · 03/10/2022 21:34

She's not and should never be a queen. Phillip was never a king!

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 03/10/2022 13:18

I think you need to give it a bit of time, our much loved Queen has barely been buried. I'm sure before long they'll drop either the consort part or the Queen part.

I don't think it'll ever be the King & Camilla. Charles & Camilla, yes. The King & Consort or the King & Queen yep.

@BigWoollyJumpers Personally I don't think the technical difference is something they'll make a point of day to day. The King & Queen Consort is just too much of a mouthful IMO

If the late Queen had only had her DD, Anne, she would be Queen Anne immediately just like Charles was immediately King. I don't think it needs time, they are the King and Queen.

Queen Elizabeth specifically requested that Camilla should take the title of Queen Consort in the event of her death.

Imissmoominmama · 03/10/2022 21:40

And Philip refused the title of King!!!

Serena1977 · 03/10/2022 21:40

I thought Camilla is Queen consort not queen camilla because she isn't the mother of the future king (william).
Catherine will be Queen (if she and William dont split) because she is the mother of the future king (george)
