Can we all start saying “Queen Camilla” now and not “Queen Consort” every time.

The BBC particularly are driving me loopy with it.

It isn’t the traditional way to refer to a consort. It was emphasised as part of the “make Camilla acceptable” campaign, but that’s over now.

No. There are limits.

TheLampIsLighted · 03/10/2022 21:43

@Imissmoominmama , Philip did not refuse the title of king. That's straightforwardly incorrect.
So much misinformation on this thread, and so many people who seem to have absolutely no understanding of the system of monarchy in the country in which they live...

TheLampIsLighted · 03/10/2022 21:44

@Serena1977 no, that's incorrect as well!

Had her marriage not ended or had she not died, then maybe she would have had a chance. As it is, there was another woman in her marriage… who is now taking the title of consort.

This is the first time a mistress and divorcee who isn’t the mother of the next in line has come to the title of Queen Consort. Maybe it is just new?

And if Charles had married me I'd be Queen. He didn't so I'm not. Diana and Charles got divorced so she would never have been Queen. There were more than 3 in the marriage, you are forgetting her men.

I thought Camilla is Queen consort not queen camilla because she isn't the mother of the future king (william).
Catherine will be Queen (if she and William dont split) because she is the mother of the future king (george)

No. Her parenthood has nothing to do with it. Camilla is the Queen. She is also Queen Camilla. The traditional style in the UK is to refer to the present occupant as "the Queen." She is a queen consort rather than a queen regnant and for now, "Consort" is being used as part of her style.

If she is still living after Charles dies, she will be known as Queen Camilla to distinguish her from Queen Catherine, who will also be a queen consort, and who will be known as "the Queen."

WakeUpAndBe · 03/10/2022 14:00

The comparison isn’t the same. Too much baggage with Camilla.

She’s not the Queen Mother.
She was the mistress who helped end the marriage between the Queen Mother (Diana) and the King.
Camilla has become Queen Consort through adultery (see also the 10 commandments the CofE preach).
Consort is a reminder that Camilla is not quite Queen Mother material, because that’s true. She is not the mother of the next in line, she’s the other woman.

Queen Consort sounds accurate.

None of that has anything to do with it. Most people are over it and it is certainly not a reflection of any kind of material she might be. It is because if someone says "the queen" people do not think Camilla, they think Elizabeth. That will fade in time. The correct title is Queen Camilla and will be what is used before long.

SenecaFallsRedux · 03/10/2022 21:54

I'm tempted to use all caps: Philip did not turn down being king! It was never offered. He wasn't even made a prince of the UK until seven years after he and Elizabeth were married.

There has only been one king consort in the whole of British history. His name was Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, and he was the husband of Mary Queen of Scots. He lobbied for co-monarch, but all he got was consort.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/10/2022 13:26

It's all a bit sexist that King trumps Queen so if we have a (true) Queen and her husband is the Prince Consort then we should have a King and a Princess Consort.

Naming her Queen Consort just exacerbates the ranking of male above female.

That's not how it works

I watched a documentary about the royal family which said he did. The reason given was that as there had been a king before her, he did not want to detract from her.

Topseyt123 · 03/10/2022 22:08

I'd perfectly happily call her Queen Camilla, without adding Consort.Queen Camilla is fine.

There is no need for the Consort part of the style. After all, HM Queen Elizabeth II was never referred to as Queen Regnant. Just the Queen

If there is a documentary out there that said that Philip turned down the title of king, it is simply wrong. That did not happen.

Imissmoominmama · 03/10/2022 22:15

It showed around the time of her jubilee 🤷‍♀️.

Imissmoominmama · 03/10/2022 22:18

I beg your pardon- it was the title Prince Consort he turned down. Apologies!

SenecaFallsRedux · 03/10/2022 22:24

Yes, evidently, Churchill floated the idea of Prince Consort, but Philip nipped the idea in the bud.

SenecaFallsRedux · 03/10/2022 22:27

One of the interesting things about Philip is that when George VI made him Duke of Edinburgh, he made him HRH, but not a prince. He had renounced his Greek and Danish princely titles, but until 1957, he was not a prince but a royal duke. Elizabeth remedied that in 1957 by making him a prince of the United Kingdom.

Don’t understands monarchists saying it’s ‘too soon’. This is literally how monarchy works. ‘This one’s dead, long live the next one’ in the same breath.

BignBootiful · 05/04/2023 08:23

Queen Escort

Alltheprettyseahorses · 05/04/2023 08:51

No. Charles and Camilla. Kate and William. Meghan and Harry. The idea of a hereditary monarchy is anachronistic so drop the titles - and money and status - altogether. Kings are rubbish anyway.

BeachBlondey · 05/04/2023 08:55

When Charles and Camilla got married there was quite an outrage, and at that time it was promised that Camilla would never be Queen. Does no one remember this, because I definitely do.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/04/2023 08:55

I don’t think I will ever dissociate ‘the Queen’ from ER in my head, but then I was born before she was crowned.

Comedycook · 05/04/2023 08:58

Well considering the whole thing is made up, who cares.

FoxFeatures · 05/04/2023 09:00

Just think if we were a modern democracy with an elected HOS, we wouldn't have this nonsense.
And yes we could elect a trump, but it would only be for a few years, not until death, when their child takes over (like North Korea ).

Remember, we were one 'not tonight Josephine' away from king Andrew.

JoanThursday1972 · 07/05/2023 10:26

I hope George is gay and marries a man before he becomes king. Then everyone can argue as to what to call the consort.
