When are we going to address the poor life expectancy for black men?

When are we going to address the poor outcomes for black women during childbirth?

What can be done?

These deaths are very sad and I don't want to minimise that.

However, in the UK, it's not correct to say that black people have a lower life expectancy than white people. In fact the opposite is true:

Maybe you're not in the UK? I'm not sure about the US.

Coolio battled drug addiction he was never going to make it to extreme old age without a lot of luck

HollyBollyBooBoo · 29/09/2022 05:36

I take your point but the people listed in your screen shot aren't a good representation of the black male population.

Most of them listed had battles with drug addiction throughout their lives which must surely be a contributing factor to a shorter life.

Isaidnoalready · 29/09/2022 05:37

DMX had a cocaine induced heart attack im not going to Google everyone but looking at some of the names I'm thinking lifestyle played a part which is sad but not an unknown consequence

nancydroo · 29/09/2022 05:47

Male cannabis culture plays a role but say anything negative to people who smoke cannabis there are only upsides.

I did Google everyone - a mixture of cancer, diabetes, heart attacks, drug induced deaths, some not disclosed, kidney problems following a transplant.

quite a lot of varied reasons

True apparently it cures EVERYTHING but the government hushes it up because well people arnt profitable and many other reasons that don't make lots of sense

If you abuse your body through drug and alcohol addiction, you will die early. It’s not rocket science

I don't know. When are the USA going to address this? When is the UK going to address the lower life expectancy of white people, in particular white working class males? So many important questions.

As for musicians of all colours, when are they going to stop leading lives of sex, drugs and rock n roll?

Yeah, premature death is always 'a joke right lol'. FFS. If it were your loved one, would you appreciate comments like that?

Also literally nobody mentioned homicide but you. Your prejudice is showing, and it's pretty damn ugly.

Noteverybodylives · 29/09/2022 06:25

If you compared your stats of black rappers vs other celebs that have died there will be no difference.

Celebrities have money, crazier lives and are surrounded by people who do not have their best interests at heart.

This usually results in a lot of alcohol and drugs which ultimately ends their life.

You cannot compare life expectancy with an unhealthy lifestyle full of drugs and alcohol.
It has nothing to do with race.

owen82 · 29/09/2022 06:29

@PaperPalace there was a documentary on TV last year about how black women are statistically more likely to die in child birth than white women (in the UK). For social reasons, they are dismissed more, was a very difficult watch.

Hearthnhome · 29/09/2022 06:36

I think you need to look at what this list represents AND decide which side to tackle it from.

Most of the people on that list (if not all) have a known history of drug use and/or alcohol abuse, which takes it toll on the body.

to compare like for like, you would need a group of white celebrities of similar ages that have the same history. See what the differences are in outcomes, then look at reasons why. Especially, given they will have similar access to support and healthcare, since both groups would be fairly wealthy.

But what do you want to achieve? If it’s a discussion about the life expectancy of non celebrity black men in America and someone who can to do something, this list doesn’t help. A lot of the deaths in black men in the US, that are drug related are usually (in some way) linked to poverty. Which doesn’t impact that list, so again a conversation about people on that list doesn’t achieve anything.

PickySlackTastic · 29/09/2022 06:37

Is it white English boys disproportionately slaying these poor black boys in the street?

@CarrieCrow er what?

who is talking about homicide? Or slaying as you call it. Hmm

Noteverybodylives · 29/09/2022 06:43

There’s a big difference claiming that black men have a shorter life expectancy and black women are more likely to die in childbirth due to social reasons that need to be tackled vs claiming that black rappers who abuse drugs and have very unhealthy lifestyles, have a shorter life expectancy simply because they’re black.

It’s quite offensive to every other black man out there to associate ‘black’ and ‘rapper’ with drugs and stupid decisions which will reduce their life expectancy.

Pardon me sorry, I just assumed cos blame was so stridently being placed in the original OP that someone must have actively caused these deaths.
No less confused now I see that isn't the case, but I recognise the misunderstanding

Cwcwbird · 29/09/2022 06:50

Where does the op 'stridently blame' anyone?

"when are we going to address..." assumes the issue is from lack of being addressed by those you're addressing

Doesn't that piece state it is reviewing only 'selected causes' not all causes?

Highly concerned about that too.
We are both from English families enduring physical difficulties resulting from living in climates we are not evolutionarily suited to, yet unwilling to return to the UK because of this and other policing issues.
Very sad.

Echobeachfarawayintime · 29/09/2022 06:59

DMX had a pretty terrible childhood apparently and then went down the wrong path as an adult.. it's true that a lot of these cases involve drug addiction and coming from deprived areas.

Charley50 · 29/09/2022 07:00

Your focus should maybe be on young people killing each other in the UK, rather than US rappers...?

However, "People from white and mixed ethnic groups had lower life expectancy compared with Black and Asian groups in England and Wales between 2011 and 2014, according to analysis by the Office for National Statistics (ONS)."

www.theguardian.com/society/2021/jul/26/life-expectancy-lower-for-white-and-mixed-ethnic-people-than-black-and-asian-groups-study

Not sure if that has changed recently, but a positive statistic for black and Asian outcomes.
