She’s a great example of why you shouldn’t give people you don’t know money. The problem is that having a blue tick kind of legitimises her.
It’s more than obvious if you follow her for any amount of time that she isn’t poor. However she is saying she is because she knows what the outcome will be.

As an aside I don’t think she has done any meaningful campaigning. She spends a lot of time suggesting she is involved with things, behind the scenes. She’s tried that with Full Time Meals before slagging off Tom Kerridge. Apart from getting her face on the news when possible to raise her own profile and tweeting I struggle to see what she does (especially ‘working’ 100 hours a week).

@Redora what's motivating me to respond on a thread like this is that it smacks of bullying. While I agree JM's life sounds somewhat chaotic with plenty of ups and downs, I don't think she is deliberately out to "scam" people. I don't understand why she's exposed to this level of scrutiny about such petty things as her decor!

Her life and ups and downs, you only have her word for it. Which is fine if you choose to believe it.

Deliberate or not, she hasn't updated her patreon for 2 years, but take the money every month.
She's put out her PayPal regularly, even being told someone gave her money from a winter cold weather payment.
She's run 2 go fund mes, one got 84k and the other got 44k. The 88k one is still open I believe.
She said that 1oo% of teemill would go to Trussell trust, then changed it so that only first 20k goes to Trussell and the rest to other charitirs. Trussell trust confirmed 11k was received, but any money raised after 2nd Feb has nothing to do with them. so 8 months + of 100% profits from teemill has never been accounted for.

So, that's 84k and rising. 44k. 8 months of teemill profit. Money sent direct to her PayPal for legal action never taken. 24 months of patreon rewards.

Meanwhile she's filled her 'shitty bungalow' with, at last tally, £30,000 worth of stuff.

So, she may have not started out to scam people, she's been happily doing so for a long time. And if you can dismiss that because of your belief she does good work.

Well... No one seems to know where or what she's done...

I think what riled a lot of people is the near constant lies and contradictions that are so easily spotted because Jack herself puts them out there. Its not like you have to do a deep dive investigation, its all right there.

Claiming she lives in a damp and shitty bungalow and that she can't leave because she is locked in a contract and she does own a tv and pays 90% of her income on rent (all her own words, slightly paraphrased)

Then people found...tweets that the delivery company left her TV on the doorstep (before she said she doesn't have one) tweets that she is on a rolling contract not locked in, tweets that seven members of her staff that she usually pays from her own pocket and usually work from her house (the damp one remember) cant work during covid and she cant afford to pay them (how could she anyway when 90% of her money goes on rent)

Claiming she can't afford shampoo and then posting on Mrs Gloss FB page that she just dyed her hair and a list of all the products she bought.

Claiming poverty and then buying an expensive type dog.

Claiming to have found her designer clothes "in a puddle"

Claiming to be a struggling mum but she is the NRP.

I do genuinely think Jack had mental health problems, she clearly cant stick to a budget and clearly acts on impulse, however its believed that she self identifies as autistic and has never beeb diagnosed.

She also had a brief spell of claiming to be trans before changing her mind.

So, potatoes do look dire, need more time to crisp up.

So you agree that if someone is doing something you don't like, it's ok to question them on it.

She's also a well known bully. Punching down as well as up. Setting her rabid followers on people that dare to question her. Then standing back smugly and watching.

Well you reap what you sow I guess, she has been bullying people for years on Twitter. I have no sympathy for her. You sounds personally invested in this - if you know her in real life, I hope you are supporting her and encouraging her to get help.

I'm confused about this.
The two versions I've heard are that she was in the GPs office and the GP looked at her notes and asked her of anyone's ever told her she was autistic...

The other version is that she was diagnosed as a child but her mum never told her.

So, either a rare and very amazing GP that can diagnose a complex condition without assessments by a properly qualified practitioner etc. Or... A mum that hides very complex conditions from her child and doesn't arrange any help that an Autistic child, teen, young person, adult might need.

Neither version makes any sense and if something doesn't make sense, it's not true.

Just how do people challenge damaging narratives or point out dodgy practices with fundraising, if any & all criticism or questions are decried as "bullying"?

It's all very well saying #be kind, but silencing legitimate comment is bad for free speech, bad for her audience who may pay out money, and ultimately bad for her too. I think it's actively harmful to individuals to be surrounded by sycophantic voices that swoon over everything they do and mob any naysayers.

I’m praying for Melissa aka ‘Jack’ and for all the people she has hurt/bullied - I’m thinking her ‘problems’ ie narcissistic tendencies / constant confabulation- dependency issues stem from her childhood and vying for attention from her parents who may possibly have prioritised their foster children. Plus it was her mother who made the roast potatoes 🥔 but her response to criticism of them invoked a very strange response 👍🏿☘️

Sharing all the things she spends money on, pictures of her large and expensive home, selfies obviously showing all her cosmetic treatments. Then she tried to make out she has zero money. Doesn’t work.

I imagine it was just the final straw, she gets bombarded with abuse on a daily basis and something like this just made her feel enough is enough. For what it’s worth I think the roast potatoes looked great. But I am a shit cook.

I'm a big Jack Monroe fan of over a decade and I've litterally never seen her recieve genuine abuse. I'm sure there has been some (she deletes so much I miss loads) but all the 'abuse' I've actually seen was just legitimate criticism.

You are mistaken: very wealthy, loving, involved parents; a brother and several foster siblings with their own families; her son's dad is the primary carer.

Genuine question:

Have you read the article linked upthread or looked up about the kickstarter she ran or her 'fundraising' for food banks? Do you realise how much she earns from people donating to her under the impression she's poor?

If so, what makes you think she's not deliberately scamming?

She seems to be alone a lot of the time. I think everyone keeps her at arms length.
