Jack Monroe posted a photo of roast potatoes, someone said they didn’t look very nice and Jack’s Twitter account was subsequently deleted.

So yeah, let’s laugh at someone who is trying to help people eat on a budget in a cost of living crisis. Does it matter if she earns money from it? Jamie Oliver makes a lot of money and also publishes books.

Thing is, while she does do some campaigning and fundraising, she is also doing some harmful stuff.

Recently she gave the Catherine Cookson lecture - it's supposed to be celebrate the voices of working class women writers. She did this speech and apparently talked about the obstacles in the way of working class women.

This really fucks me off, because she IS now one of those obstacles.

She took up a space right there that belonged to a working class woman, when she has previously claimed to be middle-class and slagged off the working class in nasty stereotypes about Jeremy Kyle etc. She has since said she's been misquoted or journalists fooled her into saying it, but it's actually from a speech she wrote and gave to the government.

AllThatHoopla · 28/09/2022 20:46

I've never ever had a roast potato.

I would ask how to make them but it seems too controversial.

00100001 · 28/09/2022 20:57

The roasties don't look awful....

I've seen far worse.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 28/09/2022 21:01

Fuck this is like mn threads of old. <blissful wispish gaze up and beyond> I’ve missed them.

LizzieSiddal · 28/09/2022 21:02

I once sprinkled the roasties with sugar instead of salt and couldn’t be arsed to do anything about it and so didn’t.

No one noticed and even commentated on how tasty they were.

I really don't understand the issue Mumsnetters seem to have with Jack. Just move on if you don't like her tweets etc. She's documented her mental health issues in the past and I honestly think people need to back off. What happened to "just be kind"? If you're not interested in her posts, life, tweets etc just don't read them. Any other celebrity or famous person in the spotlight is taboo on MN and threads are removed pdq so I don't know why this level of vitriol is allowed to remain for a, possibly, vulnerable person to read.
And no, I'm not JM, I don't personally know her, before we start with that malarkey either.

shrunkenhead · 28/09/2022 21:15

@Ocsetldil exactly. But we're not allowed to dis Jamie Oliver etc because....? Idk but if someone started bashing his family, background, relationship history, cooking skills etc the thread would be removed.
Why is JM easy prey on MN? It seems cruel and unfair.

Because she’s a grifter

catinboots123 · 27/09/2022 13:57

Here

No idea about who, what, why. I came for the roasties then stayed for the hope of seeing the offending picture.

WTF IS THAT?!?

OneFrenchEgg · 28/09/2022 21:20

What happened to "just be kind"?

So, much as I detest the superficiality of 'be kind' I agree in principle with the idea of not knowing what people have going on, not engaging in goading someone, biting your tongue if there's no harm to you etc, but - and I think this may be why people find that hard with JM, JM doesn't do the same - setting your mob on people isn't 'being kind' it's actively perpetuating hate and abuse. So it's sort of comment worthy.

shrunkenhead · 28/09/2022 21:21

What's a "grifter"? I've never heard of it.

The main issues I have are -

  • she seems to be taking working class women's opportunities when she is middle class, as per the Catherine Cookson lecture
  • she claims to be able to feed a family of 3 generously on £20 a week, which plays into the "low income families just can't budget/cook" narrative, whether she intends it to or not
  • she appears not to be transparent about some of her fundraising
  • she plays the woe is me card to get people to contribute to her paypal, yet at the same time says she is not poor. I have no problem with influencers etc asking for tips on the bass of liking their content, but the emotive heartstring pulling when there are people far worse off riles me.

@ChutneyVirgin helpful. Thanks.
But if people don't like her just ignore. Isn't that what you say to your kids at school?? I honestly don't see why anyone is so invested in someone they clearly dislike. Use your energy elsewhere.

Perisomething · 28/09/2022 21:29

Jamie Oliver is not asking for donations into his personal PayPal account then refusing to disclose where they went. He is not pretending to have it to boil soap in the hope people will donate to his tip jar but in the same breath not mentioning over 750 people pay him monthly for doing nothing. They have completely different working models / ethics.

JM has let everyone think she has changed how the ONS work. A FOI request to the ONS debunked that. She had been lying.

She stated she had coroners reports in her front room that she is working on from people who have died from starvation. A FOI to coroners office debunked that. She had no different info to what is in the public domain. The replies in these FOI specifically mentioned JM by name, denying any contact.

At one time she tweeted that she was nodded through the cordon at Grenfell because of her experience in the fire dept. She had gathered together a lot of experts to look at what could be done about the structure issues in Grenfell. That’s just insulting to the victims.

I don’t hate JM, far from it. But all this “be kind” shouted at people who are asking questions about the donations she has received is just allowing it to go on. She has collected untold amounts via Teemill and when asked where it has gone other that Trussell Trust, she said it has all gone to smaller charities that wish to remain anon. How many smaller charities would actually remain anon? That’s a lot of money that she will not account for. If people just scroll past and not question that, it allows such activity to carry on. It’s wrong.

Kids you don't like at school aren't doing talking heads bits on tv or doing lectures or speaking for low income people.

Try google mate.

Oh god thank you. All the googlable things.

'What's a barm?'
'What's chapping?'
What's guising, I've never heard of it?'
'What are sheep?'
'Are cows made of meat?'
'Are guinea pig droppings actually made of poo?'

Yes @category12 that seems very perceptive.

Aye, except there's a bit more to it than that. She's got more issues than What Car magazine and spends half her life blotto. She known for unleashing the 7 plagues of Egypt on people online over next to nothing.

Think about what is motivating you to respond to comments in this thread that you don't like, instead of "just ignoring".

AnonWeeMouse · 28/09/2022 22:00

Some detectives on another forum have been looking at the pictures she's posted from inside her 'shitty bungalow'

So far they've spotted and priced up over 22k worth of decent and expensive furniture.
As one over there pointed out though, of all her patreons supporters were highest tier, she'd be making that and £10k every month.

I know if I was a supporter of hers based on the recent blog about removing lightbulbs and boiling soap etc. If I saw she'd spent over £1200 on dining chairs just for the kitchen, I'd be wanting my cash back.

I think the issue is she stole money from supporters.

Can't tell you where money raised for charity went.

Changed her charity during a find raiser, giving money people had donated to Charity 1 to Charity 2 without consulting any donors.

Hasn't delivered promised items in return for money.

Cos plays poverty.

Takes credit for things she didn't do.

Posts a photo of receipts saying she can feed 3 people for £20 for a week.
(But only bought enough to actually only fed those people on a few hundred calories a day and then went on to say that she would obviously be using stuff she had in the freezer (meat etc). Bur wouldn't have said that had she not been questioned)

That's enough reason not to be totally supportive of the woman surely?

AutumnCrow · 28/09/2022 22:08

Well, I suppose a fool and their money blah blah ...

AnonWeeMouse · 28/09/2022 22:33

Let's not forget that she also threatened to sue an MP. In a video on YouTube she puts it on record that she is suing him. Put out a PayPal link for donations to her 570k followers, even a small percentage giving a couple quid is a shit tonne of money..
Then a couple weeks back, it was confirmed she'd taken no action.
So where's that donated money?

Why did she want donations before she'd taken any action?
Why did she say she had a team of paralegals working on it?
So on and so on and so on.

She's taking money from people who can't afford to give.

A follower gave her money from their winter fuel allowance... !

These are the people who are believing her poverty cos playing.
