Can anyone identify the creature leaving this poo on my lawn?

big patch of it, more appearing every night. Live quite rurally with woods near. Each poo is about 5cm diameter.

would like to know as it’s literally right in the middle of the fecking lawn and now becoming an issue to mow etc!!

Can anyone identify the creature leaving this poo on my lawn?

I dreamt last night that there was a giant talking pigeon in my garden. A cross with a Dodo and an eagle !

It warned me not to let my dog out into the garden as it would fly off with it.

I saw it earlier flying up into a tree with a sheep !

This mystery needs resolving soon 🤣

😂😂🤣🤣🤣

Mykittensmittens · 29/09/2022 16:42

No @custardbear it is 100% poo

no camera triggers today.

have reset it as video capture not photo and put it back out…. Due heavy rain tonight and tomorrow which I am hoping will wash most of it away - then I can see any new deposits more clearly.

This is my favourite thread on MN for a while Smile. Can't wait to find out the culprit!

thinkfast · 29/09/2022 17:13

We have 4 large wood pigeons in our garden. Their poo is just like your photos OP

Mykittensmittens · 29/09/2022 17:32

@thinkfast we do have wood pigeons - but they do splat poo usually where they hang out which is sitting on a wooden arch over a path by the patio. They also hang out near the bird feeding table and waddle all day round the base looking hopeful. No poo there! Why would a pigeon go back repeatedly to one spot on a massive lawn and poo 50+ times over? I didn’t think pigeons have a specific latrine behaviour.

there is no food source either - the acorns are on another part of the lawn and no poo there!

Strangely our wood pigeons only poo on one side of our lawn and on one side of our deck. Not in one concentrated area like yours, but I never spot their poo on the other side of our garden.

Oh this is wonderful, thank you! I saw what I thought was a mink a few weeks back, and went looking for a good comparative overview of the wee sleekit species.

LadyEloise1 · 30/09/2022 10:09

Any update please ?

Onceuponawhileago · 30/09/2022 10:50

This is absolutely mink, stoat, weasel, pine martin - all of them use piles of earth to mark territory. Its not a bird.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 30/09/2022 11:02

One's stoatly obvious and the other is weasely recognised.

I'll get my coat....

Ha! Very good.

It's not pigeons or geese. Birds are not that methodical. My money's also on a small, territorial mammal: stoat, pine marten (depending on where you live) or weasel.

Chris Packham would love this stuff and I bet could tell you in a heartbeat!

LadyEloise1 · 30/09/2022 11:25

I don't think it's a bird either.
I do hope the camera caught it last night.

GottaGetOutofDairy · 30/09/2022 11:26

Thanks!

The problem with the mammal theory is that it looks nothing like my hastily Googled images of their poos.

It does look exactly like the huge pigeons poos left in my garden by the crowd of birds I refer to as our 'grey chickens'.

But I couldn't explain the behaviour of it all being in the same spot.

I shall enjoy finding out who the culprit is!

Mykittensmittens · 30/09/2022 12:13

If I can bring myself to go out in the sideways rain I’ll go at get the camera at lunchtime. Batteries may need recharging by now anyway.

spoke to my neighbour last night. She’s convinced it’s a pheasant!

Mykittensmittens · 30/09/2022 12:31

Just checked - 17 triggers in total. Me. The preciously seen squirrel. Two blanks (nothing visible) and the rest are me setting it up.

but there is MORE poo! With more white in it this time! Would that correlate with next doors convinces pheasant theory?

I didn’t photograph it was pissing down. I’ll try again later.

i’m starting to think I’ll never know.

Try a different distance or a slightly different angle. Sometimes my camera refuses to pick up anything straight ahead.

What is your trigger speed set at? The speed between camera being tripped and the photo being taken? Also the timing of the camera to reset itself for the next picture?

Carproblem · 30/09/2022 14:41

F!!

Bunnyfuller · 30/09/2022 17:39

Tweet the pics to Chris Packham, I can’t bear the suspense!

pilates · 30/09/2022 17:44

I’m intrigued too

bloodyunicorns · 30/09/2022 18:19

Looks like goose poo - but surely you would notice a goose in your garden! 😂

Fabulous idea! OP if you can’t do it, I bet someone can!

scrivette · 30/09/2022 20:12

I thought of you this morning OP as I noticed the same poo on the pavement when I was walking. There was a big tree overhead though and there was a lot of it.

IceandIndigo · 30/09/2022 21:49

Wow, a poo mystery! Who knew I needed this in my life. My money is also on mustelid. Pooing systematically in one place is definitely mammal behaviour, and if it stinks it’s probably a carnivore.

skedaddler · 30/09/2022 21:57

Put it on Twitter and tag Chris packham!

Mykittensmittens · 30/09/2022 23:14

I don’t do Twitter or other socials. I’m appalling at these things !

recharging batteries overnight and have already reset it to trigger the most sensitive movement and video not photo. Will reset tomorrow via another angle! Awful weather today has kept most wildlife at bay anyway.

no geese, honestly! Garden is fully fenced and I’m watching it constantly. I am thinking pheasant or stoat at the moment!
