anyone queuing to see the coffin in London atm?

1000 replies

DickDarstedly · 14/09/2022 16:56

I am wondering how long the queue is and how the organisation is working out. Are there enough toilets? Is it true that the wristband allows you to leave and come back?

Quick ps. Anyone worried about being stranded at a station in the middle of the night, there was a ‘waiting room’ train at Paddington for people who missed last train home. Warm and sitting down!

I did three 9 hour Marshall shifts over 3 days as a volunteer alongside my day job - it was an absolute privilege to do so and I am so pleased to have the opportunity to pay my respects in this way. I met so many wonderful people, who have (generally) been in good spirits. I have especially enjoyed people turning up and offering sweets to queuers as they pass and the biscuits for the volunteers and security teams have been amazing and appreciated.

One of my favourite conversations was with a French gentleman who wanted to know if he could take the
apples in his rucksack into parliament (no) but he did have 'about fifteen' so he would have been able to eat one an hour at that point with a few left over. The man standing next to him joined the conversation. They werent sure if they were going to queue - introduced themselves, shook hands and went off to Southwark Park to get tickets. I have their entire life together planned out in my head now. Happy Golden anniversary Howard and Francios.

We don't get to queue jump or fast path and I am not able to do a 14 hour walk after those shifts, so I will be watching proceedings from the comfort of my sofa now.

Happy queuing to the queuers!

Well done Snapespeare there’s a lot of unhappy and disgruntled people on mn upset by the queue and the people in it

I think it’s great and you did a good thing

This is now a pilgrimage isn't it having taken on semi-religious overtones of sacrifice, worship and loyal devotion?

IncessantNameChanger · 17/09/2022 10:31

On lambeth bridge now. 13 miles. 10.50 hours

Just let people be?

If it’s something to one person it’s different to someone else

If it’s nothing to you, it doesn’t matter

I'm going with "no" but you do you.

hello to all in the Elizabeth Line! I meant to chat more last night but for once the need to sleep outweighed my insomnia!

ShamedBySiri · 17/09/2022 10:43

Can someone tell me how the Guards who stand on the raised area to the right and who mark the time actually know what time it is to strike the time? Is someone hidden in the wings opposite with a stop watch and waving at them? Or do they have a concealed earpiece giving the orders? It is all so smoothly done and I have no idea how they do it!

Hels20 · 17/09/2022 10:59

@IncessantNameChanger - I am 8.5 hours in and at the London Eye. But I think being on my own has helped because I have walked with purpose whenever there has been a break or a little chaos…I think I may have made up about 90 mins…

Hels20 · 17/09/2022 11:00

@EmmaH2022 - love “the Elizabeth Line”!! 😂

YoullHaveACupoTayAhGwan · 17/09/2022 11:17

@Hels20

so that sounds like you are on course for a 12-13 hr total queue, similar to what others are reporting. The official advice still seems to be to not join the queue though!

Definitely managing expectations as they’re probably worried about closing the queue sometime this weekend and disappointing people.

Hels reckon you've got 4/5 hours, thanks for laughing at my joke, which my mum didn't find funny at all!

it seems to have calmed down. I wonder if there's a surge of people travelling or if it's just too late now.

did anyone else get in the online queue for Hamlet with Cumberbatch? I didn't because my friend did that job, but there was a comedy Twitter account about it and it was hysterically funny, it was called the Hamlet Green Man or something.

when Twitter is just silly fun, it serves its true purpose! Still lots of lovely night time London pics coming.

whynotwhatknot · 17/09/2022 11:23

theyre not putting up the what3words anymore and says if park goes to capacity they will close again

i think if yo wantt o go go today or not bother tomorrow they will close it permanently reckon

TeenDivided · 17/09/2022 11:23

The queue will have to close by Sunday morning/lunchtime won't it? When does the lying in state finish? They'll want to finish slightly early rather than have people queue for 14 hours only to be told they have run out of time just before they get there.

I notice the 3 words vanished yesterday. I'm surprised the queue is still open.

they need to close the Hall by 6.30am latest on Monday so I think they have to close today unless the queue starts to reduce substantially.

Mooshamoo · 17/09/2022 11:27

Im abroad at the momet. People are talking about the queue here. The general consensus is that English people are totally crazy to queue for 14 hours during the night, in the cold, to see the dead queen. That the level of fawning is absolutely bizarre.

Do you see that it is not normal? Its very weird

People do things that other people thing are "weird". Just leave People be.

sunglassesonthetable · 17/09/2022 11:29

I'm sure the the hours of queuers have taken note.

Cheers 👍🏻

MarshaBradyo · 17/09/2022 11:29

To be fair people are flying in from ‘abroad’ so it’s not just people in UK

Also it sounds like the whole people are watching the U.K. nonsense again. So much interest

The wristbands of the last four people might be worth a resell....

Yes I think they are doing it so that if people turn up and don't get to the front they can't say they weren't warned

You know people around the world do it? Gorbachev was the last one that springs to mind recently.

And when you say 'general consensus '?
You and your mate?
You, your mate and their friend?
Everyone in the room with you?
Or the 'rest of the world' 😂

I think a lot of what happened here in the last two years was the height of insanity. But there's a time and place for saying it.

don't get me started on those still wearing masks and booking for booster number 32. As long as we respect other's choices, all will be well.
