Prince Edward

There’re threads about Charles, Andrew and Anne, but none about Edward. Why is that? He was in his older siblings shadow, no heir like Charles, no Olimpian like Anne and no dashing was hero like Andrew. Seen as a joke with his tv programs failure. Yet he came up as the most stable out of Queen’s children. The only one, who manage to create happy marriage, stayed away from
scandals, he did his service without holding grunge against his lower royal position. I like his wife Sophie too. I think they both deserve more credit that is given to them.

They haven't been entirely scandal free - there was the fuss over Edward filming William at uni and Sophie being the victim of that media sting where she was caught speaking of other royals in unflattering terms.

ShirleyPhallus · 14/09/2022 07:37

He’s under a lot of criticism at the moment for being able to wear military uniform despite only doing 4 months in the marines (I think)

Sophie and the fake Sheik was hardly scandal free

KangarooKenny · 14/09/2022 07:37

Yep, he’s not without his scandals. And a questioning of his sexuality I seem to remember.

I remember Prince Philip being incensed with rage when Edward left the Forces and went to work in the theatrical world for Andrew Lloyd Webber! That took some courage, I bet.

CormoranStrike · 14/09/2022 07:54

I think they do very well - quietly working away and raising well adjusted kids.

I definitely think they’ve grown in stature, though their royal roles may disappear now.

PAFMO · 14/09/2022 07:58

I think their roles are on the up tbh. They've been seen more and more over the past few years.

They went out of the limelight (as pretty much you'd expect the 4th child to do, even without their unfortunate decisions) pretty much as soon as Sophie's interview with the Fake Sheikh was made public.

Their royal work will increase if anything, it has to - Harry leaving leaves a massive gap. The palace has put them more in the public eye in the last year or so.

I think they are increasingly appreciated, and Sophie has got quite a lot of coverage this week as a Queen favourite.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 14/09/2022 08:04

I met him at a church event last year. I'm not a royalist at all, but I felt he came over very well, and he what was asked of him effortlessly and with good grace. I think some of the younger Royals could learn a lot from him.

Oh, OP, thank you for saying 'ther're', short for 'there are', instead of the uncaring, trendy, ungrammatical 'there's threads'. It did my heart so much good to read it that I forgot the question.
I agree with anyone who says that Edward and Sophie seem to have stabilized into a steady, useful couple after earlier wobbles in their lives.

girlmom21 · 14/09/2022 08:07

I think I'd quite like to be the unknown one fading into the background when the whole world is watching me mourn.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/09/2022 08:08

Sophie is great though

Yes me too

soupmaker · 14/09/2022 08:10

Andrew is a dashing war hero? Jezzo. We're right through the looking glass now.

lookthisway · 14/09/2022 08:11

I've always quite liked Edward. I never understood the fuss when he left the forces and tried his luck in the arts, I mean he was the 4th child, he was never going to be King or get the best castle! I agree that it was a brave thing to go against his father's wishes and do want he wanted to do even though it ultimately ended up failing. He also came across very well in interviews during the Olympics /paralympics 2012.

WildWombat · 14/09/2022 08:11

He and Sophie have turned out to be very reliable helpers for the queen in recent years. Charles is not a young man himself and with Harry gone that only leaves William to support him. I expect Edward will be sticking around for some time. All of those random Gloucesters and Kents will end up being retired though.

Has he even got a castle?

theoriginalteletubby · 14/09/2022 08:14

They’ll be stepping up even more though because Edward will become DOE shortly, the Queen and Phillip recognised the contribution of the Wesexes.

I have no idea!

PuttingDownRoots · 14/09/2022 08:17

Benefit of being the youngest... learn from the others mistakes!

This past week though... Charles has become King. Anne by her mothers side. Andrew is the villain. Edward is just Edward. (Same with Grandchildren... William is now heir. Harry is villain. The others haven't really been seen/discussed)

ParanoidGynodroid · 14/09/2022 08:18

Prince Edward has a mahoosive posh house! Not a castle, but still...

I agree those random Gloucesters and Kents should disappear. I think they're mostly 1st cousins of the queen, so Princes or Princesses in their own rights, and they do work, but they all seem excessive now.

LizziesTwin · 14/09/2022 08:18

Edward & Sophie live in Bagshot Park. Bagshot is near Slough/Bracknell/Windsor.

Their house looks quite fancy Bagshot Park

felulageller · 14/09/2022 08:19

They live in the 120 room £30million Bagshot park, close to Windsor.

Not exactly slumming it...

That looks nice!

Anyway he seems a nice chap.

nachoavocado · 14/09/2022 08:20

Not sure why he or anyone needs 120 rooms though.

For an epic game of hide and seek!

Can you imagine the electricity bill if its all in use?
