Prince Edward

There’re threads about Charles, Andrew and Anne, but none about Edward. Why is that? He was in his older siblings shadow, no heir like Charles, no Olimpian like Anne and no dashing was hero like Andrew. Seen as a joke with his tv programs failure. Yet he came up as the most stable out of Queen’s children. The only one, who manage to create happy marriage, stayed away from
scandals, he did his service without holding grunge against his lower royal position. I like his wife Sophie too. I think they both deserve more credit that is given to them.

Nice! Could turn it into an air b&b when they aren't there.

Do royals pay electricity bills? Imagine being the one who has to go round checking all the lights are switched off at night. Bet they want one of those hive things. Or an Alexa in every room.

Floralei · 14/09/2022 08:30

I met him a year ago(ish) and he was lovely, really engaged and smiley and easy. They don’t get loads of publicity and Sophie gets more but their causes are great. I hope he gets the Prince’s Trust. They did have some fuckups years ago but their just getting on with it quietly has stood them in good stead.

Prince Edward has a mahoosive posh house! Not a castle, but still...

I agree those random Gloucesters and Kents should disappear. I think they're mostly 1st cousins of the queen, so Princes or Princesses in their own rights, and they do work, but they all seem excessive now.

The Kents and Gloucesters are barely seen on official duty these days. The titles will continue to pass down but the prince titles won't continue and those lines won't be working Royals.

Prince Edward Duke of Kent is 86 and Prince Michael of Kent is 80.

They are unlikely to be doing much in future, Charles had always planned to slim down the Royal Family. The example of the Kents and Gloucesters are the reason Charles was so definite that Beatrice and Eugenie would not be working Royals.

I like Edward and Sophie and think they come across well.

However, was the comment about Andrew being a dashing war hero some sort of a joke? He isn't. He's a sleazeball.

PAFMO · 14/09/2022 08:37

I was surprised to see the Kents and Gloucesters at the Jubilee. They're the Queen's generation so really, if we want rid, we should be talking about their children in comparison- and they ARE all pretty much removed from public life.
The Duke of Kent has always been very hardworking though- as has the Duchess of Gloucester.

NotSorry · 14/09/2022 08:45

Edward was taking the Duke of Edinburgh's place for some time for the DofE award scheme, even when the DofE was still alive. I suspect he will take over that completely now - I like him and Sophie - they just seem to quietly get on with things

Charlize43 · 14/09/2022 08:47

I always think the best royals are the ones you never read about.

Andrew is a dashing war hero? Jezzo. We're right through the looking glass now.

That was how he was portrayed in the 80,s after the Falklands war ,I'm old enough to remember the Randy Andy headlines ,he was the supposed " good looking one"
Obviously with what's come out in recent years his reputation has taken a huge nose dive.

Turefu · 14/09/2022 08:55

Andrew was a dashing war hero- once upon a time- and had quite a lot press coverage. He become sleazball later. Sophie and sheikh, unfortunte , but she's never said anything horrible about her in-laws. She defended Charles as fun father.

I'm old enough to remember Andrew in the Falklands conflict.

He did OK there, but I still maintain that a sleazeball is not a "dashing war hero."

diddl · 14/09/2022 09:03

They all seem to live in pretty big places don't they?

I think Charles' Highgrove seems one of the more modest!

I think that the Tindalls live with Princess Anne don't they so a bit of space saving going on there😁

Nekomata · 14/09/2022 09:04

I must admit I’m obsessed with their house!!

Theyre kind of boring, so there isn’t much to say about them, but they seem nice enough.

Has it been announced yet whether he’ll be made Duke of Edinburgh yet?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/09/2022 09:06

Their house is massive!! I suppose they only have that though, I don't think they've had a London place have they? Maybe once he becomes DoE they will be assigned staff and a London office.

Agree - High Grove is minute in comparison, though he does also have the Duchy land so maybe there are multiple properties on that.

Zara lives in a separate house on the Estate her mum owns.

I remember it very well and he certainly was portrayed by the media as a "dashing war hero".

No - one is saying that epithet could apply now, just that is was back then.

Today - sleazeball certainly.

Isn't that William's now?

House is amazing, I wonder how many people they have to maintain it. I expect there will be more announcements about titles and advancement when the dust has settled, the issue of the Sussex children still needs sorting one way or another.

coodawoodashooda · 14/09/2022 09:11

What is the Edward scandal about filming William? I don't remember that.

A colleague of mine knows them pretty well, and says Edward is a genuinely nice man who does his job enthusiastically but is not exactly the brainbox in any room, iykwim 😂

Colleague seems to like them a lot and says they are genuine and genuinely well-meaning, if not winning any prizes for intellect. Edward’s a good listener, apparently.

Hbh17 · 14/09/2022 09:12

It is very easy to forget that - 40 years ago - Andrew was considered to be a war hero and a "pin up". Charles was unfavourably compared with his younger brother. Things may be very different now, but we can't rewrite history.

Edward & Sophie seem to be hard-working and likeable, and can be a great support for the new King. I hope he does create them Duke & Duchess of Edinburgh.

Beepus · 14/09/2022 09:17

I think it's great that Lady Louise has been working in a garden centre over the summer for £6 odd an hour.

FayeGovan · 14/09/2022 09:18

I like Sophie, i think Edward has done well because of her.

ThreeRingCircus · 14/09/2022 09:20

I met Prince Edward years ago at an event and he came across really well. Polite, genuinely listened to people and took time to speak to everyone. He seemed to be a quiet, hardworking sort of man and I think he's continued to be like that.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/09/2022 09:21

Edward was a good looking young man. He isn't my type now but not altogether unattractive. But I'd say he was in his early 20s.

I think it was something to do with filming William at University, when at the time William was being afforded his privacy as he was a non working royal and a student?
