Prince Edward

There’re threads about Charles, Andrew and Anne, but none about Edward. Why is that? He was in his older siblings shadow, no heir like Charles, no Olimpian like Anne and no dashing was hero like Andrew. Seen as a joke with his tv programs failure. Yet he came up as the most stable out of Queen’s children. The only one, who manage to create happy marriage, stayed away from
scandals, he did his service without holding grunge against his lower royal position. I like his wife Sophie too. I think they both deserve more credit that is given to them.

Edward’s production company filmed in St Andrews when the press agreed to leave them alone. It was not good. Just to clarify that while it was not good, it’s not him whipping his phone out and filming Prince William at dinner last week or anything. It was a privacy breach 20 years ago and it led to him (as well as other things) having to give up any idea of independence by having his own company or breaking away.

Basically it was a “you’re either in or you’re out” scenario whereas previously he’d asked to try to strike out on his own and when he capitalised on a royal connection to make money it was kiboshed.

A close friend of mine worked with Sophie before she got engaged to Edward. She said she was a really nice, down to earth woman.

I don’t have a lot of time for the royals; I think they would be a lot more tolerable if they just got on with quietly opening hospitals and supporting charities like Edward and Sophie do, rather then all the drama that certain others invite.

PAFMO · 14/09/2022 09:29

I'd forgotten the filming scandal.

Prince Andrew did do active service. Which obviously he wasn't obliged to. He was also, again, around the late 80s cited as being the most hardworking royal after Anne.

Obviously, his reputation is gone to shit now, but that doesn't change the fact he went to the Falklands.

Let's not forget the Disastrous " It's a Royal Knock-out!".

They live in the 120 room £30million Bagshot park, close to Windsor.

Not exactly slumming it...

What do you do with that many rooms anyway?

MelodyPondsMum · 14/09/2022 09:37

There were rumours the Queen was going to make Edward and Sophie move to Scotland. I wonder if that is more or less likely to happen now.

The Queen making anyone do anything is less likely now.

That's a West Country term for tourists! My mum's family in Devon use it all the time.

I think both Edward and Sophie made some blunders when they were younger, but they both work hard for the Royal family quietly and behind the scenes. They've been involved with quite a few things within my work organisation and have always been very impressive and professional. They were also the ones in the Queen's "support bubble" during the worst of the Covid lockdowns and Prince Phillip bequeathed his equestrian driving carriages to their daughter, so the relationships with them seem to have been very close. I think (may be wrong though) that Edward has, or is to, inherit the title of Duke of Edinburgh from his late father.

I think that he and his family have kept their heads down and got on with things and so there's not much for editors to publish.

I thought he was gay? Shame if he is and he's been forced to live a lie.

I was surprised to see the Kents and Gloucesters at the Jubilee. They're the Queen's generation so really, if we want rid, we should be talking about their children in comparison- and they ARE all pretty much removed from public life.
The Duke of Kent has always been very hardworking though- as has the Duchess of Gloucester.

Wasn't the Queen very close to the Duke of Kent? I seem to remember him accompanying her in place of Prince Philip

Jagoda · 14/09/2022 09:50

He was widely believed to be gay before he married Sophie. I must admit, when the stories about the Prince of Pegging started, I just assumed it was Edward, not William.

MelodyPondsMum · 14/09/2022 09:51

Ffs Hmm some great homophobia.

herecomesthsun · 14/09/2022 09:52

He seems to have a solid family and to be getting on with life. I heard a radio interview where something a bit controversial was discussed and he chuckled said "Oh I am keeping RIGHT out of that, nothing to do with meeee" in a a good natured and very sensible way.

It didn't stop the newspapers trying to make something out of what he said, however.

Lady Louise seems very sweet and cute, in particular. It can't have been easy for her, growing up a bit in the public eye, with the slight eye disability she initially had.

😂I LOL'd at that one.
I doubt that was ever HMQs plan.

My dh was assumed to be gay by some family members because he’d never really had many girlfriends before me. It’s a lazy assumption

Edward & Sophie live in Bagshot Park. Bagshot is near Slough/Bracknell/Windsor.

Their house looks quite fancy Bagshot Park

Lucky Sophie wasn't on last night's bake-off! No chance of finishing that show stopper in the time allowed Grin

He’s under a lot of criticism at the moment for being able to wear military uniform despite only doing 4 months in the marines (I think)

Sophie and the fake Sheik was hardly scandal free

But Anne does seem to get criticism for wearing military uniform and she didn't do 4 minutes in any of the services.

I'm not criticising her by the way, she seems to do alot but does seem a double standard. Of course I might have missed criticism of her.

ancientgran · 14/09/2022 10:03

That should have been Anne doesn't.

I thought she did something horsey in the army?

Dinoteeth · 14/09/2022 10:03

He had all the whoo haa of failing in the marines, called a wimp etc, to be fair more people fail thd Commando course than make it. Then the failed theater company. Very difficult for someone in his position to make a career for themselves.

I'd agree, he was encouraged to really get to know Sophie before they announced their engagement. I'm sure they didn't get married until after the other three divorced?

But they seem to have found a role for themselves as full time working Royals.

They will be needed as support for Charles and in time William. The Quuens generation Kents, Gloucesters and Princess Alexandra must all be ageing.

I'm in Devon although not born and bred and yes we refer to the visitors as grockles and the bucket and spade shops by the beach as "grockle alley" I used to be a grockle, I suppose some people use it to be offensive but generally in Devon it isn't offensive, too many people rely on income from the grockles to want to offend them.

EdithWeston · 14/09/2022 10:08

They were hit by scandal, and were deeply unpopular (and pilloried by the Press)

But their chosen course of action was to just keep going, and after 20 years of unexceptional performance of Royal duties, they have now been rehabilitated.

I'm rather glad that the Countess is getting more coverage - the work she does on VAWG, FGM and rape as a tool of war rarely gets reported on, but now the public is more accepting of her, there might be more

Well she's done lots of horsey things but I've never heard of her doing military service, obviously Charles and Andrew did, Edward did some training and bailed, William and Harry did and of course the Queen did in the ATS. I think all her military ranks/medals etc are honorary.

EdithWeston · 14/09/2022 10:12

That's right - they married in 1999

It was 1992 when Princess Anne's divorce was finalised, and the separations od the Waleses and the Yorks were announced, with both those divorces being finalised in 1996
