Is your school open tomorrow?

How many people have already heard that their school is shut tomorrow? It never occurred to me that this might be a thing, but apparently several schools in our area have already emailed parents. Surely this is an all or none scenario, not up to each head teacher's discretion? But also, surely they'd have to tell us by 8pm if school wasn't open in the morning?

(I'm a teacher and a parent, and I've not heard from either school)

And I'm no royalist but I find it bizarre that some people on this thread think it's 'virtue signalling' to pay respect to an elderly woman who has been our head of state for seven decades. As my old Nan would have said, 'stop trying to be clever clever'.

BooseysMom · 09/09/2022 04:17

DS came in earlier and asked what will happen to us now the Queen has died.. and will we be attacked by Putin?! God love him

How old is he? Kind of cute at 7, not so much at 27 🤣

He's 8.

Paying respect could be holding a special assembly, having a two minute silence or dropping a lesson to work on a lovely whole school display about the Queen. It really doesn't need to involve closing the school for the whole day when, let's be realistic here, most children won't be mourning or paying their respects, they'll just be enjoying an extra day off.

@ThreeImaginaryBoys

did you just want to drop the phrase “virtue signalling” in for your own game of buzzword bingo, because I haven’t seen that on this thread at all.

PupInAPram · 09/09/2022 05:51

JubileeTissues · 08/09/2022 20:20

What? Why would they be closed?

They aren't. Folk need to calm down. I work in a very large high school. The question hasn't even been asked. If any are it's a tiny percent. Fewer than 1% I bet.

PupInAPram · 09/09/2022 05:58

So go ahead those saying how disgusting it is schools are closing, name one school? I'm off to work now, in my school!

Oh dear seriously if teachers pull this one as an excuse for another day off.

I imagine kids are taking the mickey and hoping schools are closed.

Yes because teachers make the decisions 🙄.

Thankfully schools are following the advice from the dfe. No one wants schools closed again! (Well except the children)

Ctrl+F is your friend - it was mentioned a couple of times upthread.

If schools are closed for the funeral, it would be because they were directed to by the DfE. I think most people would have the wit to realise that, thankfully.

Sort yourself out, @Namedifferentorquestion

SudocremOnEverything · 09/09/2022 06:50

I’d expect that most schools will be open and handling events with assemblies etc.

UserDD999 · 09/09/2022 06:56

OK karen

ThickCutSteakChips · 09/09/2022 07:03

Maximo2 · 08/09/2022 23:30

So - back in the real world - not one school is closing.

Have you a shred of evidence, OP, or is this just a school bashing thread?

I don't believe the OP has actually heard of a single 'email' being sent out at all, or if they have its bullshit anyway.

Just a goady thread so that people can moan at teachers for 'pulling this one as an excuse for another day off'.

Because obviously its the teachers who decide Hmm

ThanksItHasPockets · 09/09/2022 07:09

A friend at the DfE says they have been told the funeral is likely to be Monday 19 September, which is corroborated by the papers this morning. Several papers are also stating that it will be a public holiday so closures will go well beyond schools.

Not that this will stop certain posters criticising teachers for taking an extra day off Hmm

Is your school open tomorrow?
Ceannah · 09/09/2022 07:41

I'll have to work on Mon 19th so I guess my children will just have to sit home alone, they're secondary age but I would have liked to be with them.

Isn't Caterham a boarding school?!

AppalledParent · 09/09/2022 10:59

Caterham is made up of three schools, Pre-Prep , Prep and Senior School. A small fraction of senior school are boarders (Largely from overseas). The entire three schools have been closed. Boarders are being cared for today

YoniWheretheSunDontShine · 09/09/2022 17:45

The day of the funeral should be a public holiday

Because teachers have so much say in whether their school closes or not Confused

Besides, not a single school I know of closed today, certainly no state schools. All of the independents locally here were open too.

If we close in the day if the funeral it will be a decision made much higher up than by the classroom teachers! It will be information coming from the DfE
