Is your school open tomorrow?

How many people have already heard that their school is shut tomorrow? It never occurred to me that this might be a thing, but apparently several schools in our area have already emailed parents. Surely this is an all or none scenario, not up to each head teacher's discretion? But also, surely they'd have to tell us by 8pm if school wasn't open in the morning?

(I'm a teacher and a parent, and I've not heard from either school)

scouts decided not to have a meeting this evening ‘in light of the sad news’ but not heard anything from schools. DS asked if he could have the day off to mourn, I told him no such luck mate.

Nice try.🤣

The local carnival has been cancelled this Saturday out of respect for the Queen. All money raised would have been going to local charities.

Monkeybutt1 · 08/09/2022 21:45

As a, racing family I would have thought she'd probably want it to go ahead.
I don't agree with this jumping on the band wagon to show respect publicly. Going about your business as normal doesn't mean you are disrespectful. Someone I don't know has sadly died, I am sad for that but my life goes on as normal as it will for many.

Listening to the radio a few mins ago that explicitly said schools are open during the period of mourning so unless it’s an indie, or there is a specific event like no hot water etc. schools cannot just close without guidance from the DfE via their area authority.

Having just come back from a children’s activity when the children heard this as it was announced, I would say it’s incredibly important they are at school tomorrow until they make sense of all this and prepare for the funeral. I was a little surprised at how upset some of them were, comments like we have a new PM and now the queen has died + this other thing in their life. What’s gonna happen next type comments? It’s been a lot of change for children in recent years. Day off for funeral maybe, the rest of the time they need to be IN.

DS came in earlier and asked what will happen to us now the Queen has died.. and will we be attacked by Putin?! God love him

How old is he? Kind of cute at 7, not so much at 27 🤣

cariadlet · 08/09/2022 21:50

We're open tomorrow. We're holding 2 minutes silence but otherwise it's a normal day.

Starlightstarbright1 · 08/09/2022 21:51

We have had it on Sm pic of secondary school closing tomorrow. Presumably by pupils

mnahmnah · 08/09/2022 21:51

Well I’ve just received an email from my head about the consultation on pay awards and no mention at all of the Queen. So I’m assuming it hasn’t crossed his mind to close!

reluctantbrit · 08/09/2022 21:52

DD tried to convince me that they would have 2 weeks off.

We got an email at 8.30pm, reasurring us that school is open as normal. I wouldn't expect anything else.

Funeral - maybe, it depends. I would hope it's either a full BH or just a normal day.

comfortablyfrumpy · 08/09/2022 21:53

Surely schools will stay open tomorrow?
Though I expect they may shut on the day of her funeral

alwaysfactor50 · 08/09/2022 21:54

DfE are saying schools should be open, rightly so

Rainbowcat99 · 08/09/2022 21:54

Well I have inadvertently become the pariah of the class WhatsApp. It seems the mums on there are champing at the bit for the school to be closed.
I have a "why would it be??" Type reply and am now being bombarded with pictures.
It's all very odd.
I'm actually sadder than I thought about the Queen passing but don't see why schools need to close.

Nat6999 · 08/09/2022 21:55

abovedecknotbelow schools sent pupils home when the King's death was announced

Nat6999 · 08/09/2022 21:57

Football matches tomorrow are postponed.

Eaumyword · 08/09/2022 21:57

We are open as usual (indie prep school.)
We're doing a special little assembly in celebration of HMQ's life&reign with age appropriate Q&A afterwards.

Starseeking · 08/09/2022 22:00

We had an email saying open as normal, although you can get there early to join in a group prayer for the Royal family (faith school).

Bsjjsnbs928 · 08/09/2022 22:00

I would have thought a mention in assembly or a minute silence is more likely. Would they close on the day of the funeral? I don't think I can take much more time off work 😥

HouseOfGuineas · 08/09/2022 22:01

@Rainbowcat99

Given how much children have missed school the last 2 years and there is no guarantee they’ll have teaching provision for 5 days over the winter since schools can’t pay for either heating or teachers, maybe just tell em to send their kid in whilst they can and watch the tumbleweed.

TheMoth · 08/09/2022 22:03

My yr 11 will be gutted, absolutely gutted, that they are in school tomorrow. They'd convinced themselves that they got a week off, but would have been happy with a day.

I can predict tomorrow:(accusatory)"miss, how come we're in school today?"
"I don't know. Liz Truss hasn't phoned me yet. Poems out "
" Yeah, but we shouldn't be in, should we? I can't do my lesson today. I'm too upset. Can I go to the safe room?"

X every lesson tomorrow.

Not in the spirit

LimpBiskit · 08/09/2022 22:16

Why would they close? How bizarre.

neveradullmoment99 · 08/09/2022 22:18

A lot of reporting that it will be Monday 19th

neveradullmoment99 · 08/09/2022 22:20

The funeral that is.

HarleySq · 08/09/2022 22:20

CE of my council marking the Queens death respectfully but reminding us that we are much needed to deliver vital public services. ( including schools)

Public council meetings will not be held during the 10 days of mourning but all other services to continue.
Further information to follow regarding the funeral.

SpringRainbow · 08/09/2022 22:25

I have heard nothing from the school.

However, I would be surprised if they did close. They seem to only reluctantly close if they are told that they have to. They take attendance extremely seriously.
