Is your school open tomorrow?

How many people have already heard that their school is shut tomorrow? It never occurred to me that this might be a thing, but apparently several schools in our area have already emailed parents. Surely this is an all or none scenario, not up to each head teacher's discretion? But also, surely they'd have to tell us by 8pm if school wasn't open in the morning?

(I'm a teacher and a parent, and I've not heard from either school)

Why are the shops shutting 😐

Oh get this one
The BOOKIES , yes the BETTING SHOPS are shut tomorrow because the queen has horses
They actually were classed as LESUIRE when they had to shut for lockdown 1 but managed to reopen as RETAIL when shops started to reopen so they could find a loophole to open when retail reopened

HT at my DD’s school never ever shuts the school, never sends them home in really bad weather or anything, it’s always ‘open as usual’ & she expects all children in unless v ill.

Just how it should be.

Well he shut for covid

Which LEA are you?! Not heard of any schools round here closing tomorrow.

Why are the shops shutting 😐

Are they shutting tomorrow or on the day of the funeral (as would be expected)?

Icequeen01 · 08/09/2022 20:45

Literally whilst reading this thread I have received an email in my school inbox from the DfE saying schools should stay open.

Cornflakegirll · 08/09/2022 20:48

Don’t know of any schools closing locally and work at a secondary for a large MAT who have made it clear all schools will remain open.

Seafretfreda · 08/09/2022 20:48

Ridiculous. Talk about jumping on the bandwagon! Why would a school need to close? Perhaps the school that the princes and princess attend, at a push? But across the country?! I’m insulted enough to have received an email from Sainsbury’s about the Queen’s passing. I have never once been to Sainsbury’s and linked the store in any way, shape or form with the Queen. Grief virtue signaling at its best.

Madamecastafiore · 08/09/2022 20:48

DDs prep have a service in the chapel tomorrow it is open. DD loves the queen so I imagine they'll be lots of teary small children in that chapel.

Email just said we'd be kept up to date with any planned closures.

Monkeybutt1 · 08/09/2022 20:49

They have cancelled the horse racing at Doncaster tomorrow on what would have been a huge day for them. I don't get why.

coldcaff · 08/09/2022 20:50

Why are things closing tomorrow? I can understand closures for the day of the funeral so that people can watch it on TV.

EarlofShrewsbury · 08/09/2022 20:51

GhostFromTheOtherSide · 08/09/2022 20:36

Likely out of respect.

The entertainer has a very Christian ethos and isn’t open on a Sunday and yet as a business has continued to thrive.

They also don't sell certain toys due to this.

LostMySocks · 08/09/2022 20:53

We had an email. Open as usual, special assembly, waiting for guidance from DofE about funeral but possibly closed

Isaidnoalready · 08/09/2022 20:36

Why are the shops shutting 😐

Because there will be a virtue-signalling rush to be seen to be "respectful".

I have no problem with the RF, btw, but I do have a problem with the domino effect of virtue-signalling.

JubileeTissues · 08/09/2022 20:53

"They have cancelled the horse racing at Doncaster tomorrow on what would have been a huge day for them. I don't get why."

All racing has been cancelled. Don't you know the Royals are a racing family? It's a mark of respect.

Closing schools is completely different.

Again, virtue signalling.

Anon778833 · 08/09/2022 20:54

DD’s school is open and they are doing a minutes silence at 12.

RedToothBrush · 08/09/2022 20:55

Allmarbleslost · 08/09/2022 20:21

It hadn't occurred to me that they might close. Surely if they do close at all it'll be for the funeral?

Surely its better to wheel out the tv and watch the funeral at school, like I watched Andrew and Fergie get married when I was 8?

Its daft to close. Kids might learn something about history / how the country works.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 08/09/2022 20:58

It had better be. The poor kids have only been back at ours for three days.

Surprised at Doncaster; those areas of Yorkshire are not particularly in thrall to the monarchy as a rule.

h78 · 08/09/2022 20:59

Aren't kids funny? Dd12 is more concerned about how many days she's going to get off school when I expressed my sadness at the Queen's passing. She only went back to school yesterday!

Wishyfishy · 08/09/2022 21:02

Open but they did send round a statement about the Queen..

oreobiscitz · 08/09/2022 21:03

Bloody silly!

Kids have missed enough school

PurpleDaisies · 08/09/2022 21:03

local schools are open here

Haven’t heard of any shutting

CherrySocks · 08/09/2022 21:03

Kew Gardens has announced they will be closed tomorrow.

Rockbird · 08/09/2022 21:04

"Blah blah School will observe the mourning period whilst continuing to support our children, families and staff. Further formal communication will follow tomorrow"

Just got this from DD1's school. What does it even mean? I assume they're open but it's not very clear.

Shoopshoopshoopshoopshoop · 08/09/2022 21:07

I got a text at 7.30 to say they would “remain open to maintain stability at this sad and difficult time” Hmm, it didn’t even occur to me they might close but it made me chuckle.
