Is your school open tomorrow?

How many people have already heard that their school is shut tomorrow? It never occurred to me that this might be a thing, but apparently several schools in our area have already emailed parents. Surely this is an all or none scenario, not up to each head teacher's discretion? But also, surely they'd have to tell us by 8pm if school wasn't open in the morning?

(I'm a teacher and a parent, and I've not heard from either school)

I would be shocked if the funeral were held on a Sunday, but that won't happen. Monday would make sense.

LynetteScavo · 08/09/2022 22:30

But anyway, yes school/work open here tomorrow.

Itsokay2020 · 08/09/2022 22:34

The DfE emailed at 8.43pm and made it clear that schools and FE should remain open. Further information will be released once the final arrangements are known. Why would a school close? Daft decision making!

Have you really heard that several schools in your area are closing? Schools can't just shut willy nilly - of course they are open!

TheMoth · 08/09/2022 22:46

To be fair, it's been pretty much a given in the schools I've worked in, that queen's death=day off, then another day for the funeral. Of course, this 'given' was probably started by the kids and has become fact over the years.

yesterdaytoday · 08/09/2022 22:47

For goodness sake. This was a woman who got up from her deathbed to greet the new prime minister just over 48 hours ago. Got dressed, put on her lippy and plastered a smile on her face, doing her duty right to end. And Mumsnet wants to know if the schools will close.

The joke is, some of them will. Any excuse. The stiff upper lip keep calm and carry on mantra died out with the Queen’s generation. And we are so much worse off for it.

swimmingincustard · 08/09/2022 22:51

Open tomorrow. It's expected they will be closed on the day of the funeral (likely to be Monday 19th).

Sothis · 08/09/2022 22:58

Yes open tomorrow with a brief service in the school chapel that parents can attend too and a more formal chapel service next week.

LongLostTeacher · 08/09/2022 23:01

My children’s swimming lessons have been cancelled on Friday and Monday.

We live in Aberdeenshire though and have been told is due to staff deployment. Really intrigued as to what the life guards will be doing over the next four days to assist in the situation.

No Aberdeenshire schools closed.

LongLostTeacher · 08/09/2022 23:02

Hope my above post doesn’t sound snippy, I have no problem with the lifeguards being redeployed for this, am genuinely curious about what they’re going to be doing!

underneaththeash · 08/09/2022 23:12

I hope mine will be closed on the day if her funeral. Everything open tomorrow as usual.

Pigeonpair1 · 08/09/2022 23:13

It will be a bank holiday on day of the funeral

No it won't. it's a National day of Mourning and up to individual employers if they give you time off.

canyouextrapol · 08/09/2022 23:15

I think they'd only close for the funeral. Which I read somewhere is on a Saturday anyway

Itsokay2020 · 08/09/2022 23:17

@LongLostTeacher they could be police officers, I know several swimming instructors who are!

Pigeonpair1 · 08/09/2022 23:18

I think I might be getting mixed up with Charles’s Coronation.

Justsleep · 08/09/2022 23:19

Hope so, ds starts school tomorrow.

Friends up there say just general volunteers being asked from anywhere. As the onslaught now coming down is already huge and will just get rediculous over the coming days.marshalling,directions.litter,keeping the peace etc

Maximo2 · 08/09/2022 23:30

So - back in the real world - not one school is closing.

Have you a shred of evidence, OP, or is this just a school bashing thread?

Oh maybe! They all look far too young to be police officers…. but I guess that’s similar to the the thing about thinking police officers look young when your old! 😂

I haven’t heard that although I’m sure you’re right. I work for the council on an ad hoc basis, hope they ask me, I’d love to help.

Namedifferentorquestion · 08/09/2022 23:42

Oh dear seriously if teachers pull this one as an excuse for another day off.

I imagine kids are taking the mickey and hoping schools are closed.

LongLostTeacher · 08/09/2022 23:46

So funny! People still haven’t realised that it’s not the teachers who decide when schools close. lol.

On the assumption that businesses and workplaces close on the day of the funeral, please come back to reassure us that you went to work instead and didn't 'pull this one as an excuse' for a day off, @Namedifferentorquestion.

Or are you just goading teachers?
