Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

Personal responsibility
This is a Mrs Thatcher speech , rolling it back
My god, it's going to be bad I think

DuncinToffee · 05/09/2022 13:33

Delivering to the people, how long have they been spouting that line now

Really afraid

The Labour Party

This is what new Conservative Prime Minister Liz Truss really thinks about working people.

Her vote share with MPs & membership means she'll have to broaden her Cabinet beyond the ERG if she's going to hold the party together.

Labour Party have been handed a decent amount of campaigning material this summer.

If this is where we are with Starmer not at his best, I can’t wait for him to get on top of his game.

Oi that's my line.

balalake · 05/09/2022 15:42

Only one more sleep until the worst Prime Minister ever leaves office. Sadly not to a prison cell.

the80sweregreat · 05/09/2022 15:47

The ' tribute' to BJ on ' have I got news' last Friday showed a fresh faced Boris being asked about the Darius Guppy debacle. Sheepish isn't the word.
He has gotten away with so much over the years!

Truss 57.4%
Sunak 42.6%

Interesting. I was expecting the win to be a bit more decisive to be honest.

Same here.

My lunch break finishes at 12.25 and I had to do a sneaky check of my phone this afternoon.

Wasn't surprised at vote at all.

Was surprised at the close (ish!) margin. I was expecting at least 70/30 from what we were hearing.

itsgettingweird · 05/09/2022 16:11

"Personal responsibility".

In theory I don't think anyone disagrees people should take responsibility for themselves.

But I'm a country where people are going to be paying out over half their wages just in rent and energy and cost of living is generally rising and they physically cannot afford their outgoings all the personal responsibility is the world is fucking damn useless. Angry

I expect Con HQ to be busy today....

Just spotted this comment. Yes it's all hands on deck. I think they've realised they've got quite a difficult sell.

Truss is going to repackage the Labour pre freeze policy (with as yet no clear suggestion as to how she is going to pay for it).

This might sound ridiculous but I was expecting a more dynamic speech. The tone, pacing and content were off.

Ah, she’s nothing if not consistent.

"The expected appointment of Rees-Mogg as business secretary signals two things. That Truss sees the importance of keeping Johnson loyalists onside, and that she is serious about contentious labour market reforms"

Pippa Crerar

⏰Boris Johnson will now give his final address to the nation at 7.30am tomorrow because poor weather means trip up to Balmoral to see Queen will take longer.

☔️ No 10 has contingency plans for Liz Truss to give her own address at 4pm from inside Downing Street in case of rain.

DuncinToffee · 05/09/2022 17:51

Priti Patel has written a letter to the PM announcing that she’ll step down as Home Sec tomorrow once Truss appoints a new Home Sec

That’s big of her, saves Truss sacking her I suppose.

She resigns on the first day of the High Court hearing in the legal challenge to her Rwanda policy.

She knew her job wasn't safe.

Jumping ship!

I would be jumping for you at the news if it wasn't for the fact Braverman is likely to get it.

She's just the same.

The Conservative MP Christopher Chope has been tipped to join the committee investigating claims Boris Johnson misled parliament about his knowledge of Covid law-breaking parties, sources have told the Guardian.
Chope would replace Laura Farris, who announced over the summer that she was stepping down from the body that scrutinises complaints about MPs’ behaviour.

Normally, the vote is done as a “nod or nothing” – meaning that if there was one dissenting voice, it would fall

It doesn’t seem very likely that nobody will object to Chope’s appointment - unless I’ve misunderstood.

Notonthestairs · 05/09/2022 20:43

Yes but just putting him forward is bloody ridiculous. Complete waste of time.

(I might just be thoroughly pissed off with UK politics today).
