Will it be Continuity Truss or "Socialist" Sunak in charge?

Still happens to me after nearly seven years @itsgettingweird. My mum would have been devastated tonight.

the80sweregreat · 08/09/2022 20:46

Yes. My dad adored the Queen !
God and country, old school
It is a strange time x

Yes, never forget !

I get all that everyone says. My dear old Mum died 18 years ago but even now, I momentarily go to pick the phone up and ring her. Infrequent now admittedly but it does happen. It's a funny old life isn't it...

Yes, it's the little things isn't it?

the80sweregreat · 08/09/2022 21:02

Anyway, back to the cost of living crisis !
.. I think it's going to be tough!

itsgettingweird · 08/09/2022 21:02

It's so hard isn't it?

The things that have happened since and I've wanted to tell her and although I spend so much time mourning her at those moments I still just forget.

I don't think the Queen could handle the thought of what this winter would be like.

I can't imagine how she felt hearing the clear plans not to help those who are poor because they "want to help those who help themselves".

This week is so big for our country in so many ways.

the80sweregreat · 08/09/2022 21:19

To think that last official photo of her was with Ms Truss. At least it was two women !
It is so weird , if you think too much about it!

Blossomtoes · 08/09/2022 21:52

The Treasury boss was fired today. They managed to sneak that one out. 30 years experience and the best civil servant of his generation apparently.

Oh no

I hate all this

Blossomtoes · 08/09/2022 22:07

Yup. The next ten days will be a brilliant opportunity to bury anything they don’t want us to know about.

the80sweregreat · 08/09/2022 22:15

They will bury bad news now!

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2022 23:10

Like lifting the fracking ban? Another broken promise.

Liz Truss has just lifted the ban on fracking, despite her own government's British Geological Survey, due to be released today, finding that we don't know how much impact fracking will have on "seismic" events in the UK.

I've been in bits since we heard the news. We lost dmil in February and I don't think I've really grieved, it's all come out tonight.

I feel sad to have lost our monarch, I thought a great deal of her. I also feel angry that 2 days before she died, the conservative party ridiculousness over the last few months culminated in them using her for photo opportunities. I agree, I also believe they will use her death to their own ends.

It must have stung him to see Truss making the statement, which she did well.

I bet he's also pissed off that he's very much in the second 11 when it comes to the funeral.

tobee · 09/09/2022 01:59

Sorry to hear fellow threaders have been affected by the Queen and reminded of their own personal bereavements. Flowers

It's all quite surreal and hard to believe it's finally happened.

I’m no fan of Boris Johnson but he’s a good writer- his statement on the Queen’s passing knocks Truss’ formulaic bland statement for six. That’s probably the nicest thing I have ever said about him but I’ll give credit where it’s due.

I totally agree. He wrote a very good statement.

But Truss's statement and her delivery of it was so wooden, she had to read every word.

Talking of the tories... this is truly awful. No wonder it was deleted. Selfies of tory MPs outside Buckingham Palace 😲

twitter.com/bmay/status/1567961060962869250

It might well be deleted but this is what they did. Andrea Leadsom saying... 'come on gang, let's go down to the Palace for a photo op. Anyone got a black tie? No? Doesn't matter'
I really worry about the next two years

DuncinToffee · 09/09/2022 07:49

I thought Truss did fine, prefer that over Johnson's waffle.

I totally agree. I thought Truss was dreadful. It was so insincere and I felt the queen deserved so much better.
Johnson hit the tone for me on this.

countrygirl99 · 09/09/2022 07:55

Truss always sounds as if she is reading a speech on behalf of someone who couldn't make the event due to last minute illness/crisis.

DowningStreetParty · 09/09/2022 08:48

^100%

DowningStreetParty · 09/09/2022 08:53

And I should add that starmer’s focus in his statement on public service was also excellent (and appropriately pointed at this government!) as well as being admirably succinct, so I was impressed with that one too.

borntobequiet · 09/09/2022 08:58

Johnson’s great talent is writing and sounding sincere. It unfortunately propelled him to the top job. Truss is a useless speaker and entirely self centred so finds it hard to sound as though she cares about other people. She was OK in PMQs as it was politics, which she does care about.
The real surprise yesterday was Starmer. His statement was thoughtful, compassionate and well delivered. He hit exactly the right note. It reminded me of Blair’s “People’s Princess” moment, which has been criticised as mawkish, but perfectly summed up the mood at the time and arguably helped turn round a difficult situation.
I’ve been (very) critical of Starmer in the past, but he seems to be getting it right on a nearly permanent basis now. There might be a political sea change on the way (though with our FPTP system, it’s always inevitable in the long run).
