There will be no shortage of advice, there’s a very strong tradition of Arctic Warfare Training this side of the pond the likes of the RN/ Royal Marines regularly deploying to Norway.

There is no shortage of this expertise within NATO. ANG troops have to cope with winter conditions for about six months a year, so they deal with them a lot. The Canadians could certainly help too.

Let's hope that Russian winter logistics are as bad as the rest.

My daughter did some training in Canada after she left Sandhurst.

The Russians weren't that great in February at the start of the war. Seems somewhat strange as I would have thought snow is the Russian natural climate. They should be in their element, so to speak.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 06/09/2022 18:47

Yup. In the colder-than-she-liked. After which of course they posted her to Afghanistan and then Somalia and South Sudan. Oh well.

Ijsbear · 06/09/2022 18:48

And the Finnish people!

Ijsbear · 06/09/2022 18:56

📃 The IAEA released a report on the results of the mission to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

▪️The report says that there is an urgent need for interim measures to prevent a nuclear accident, which may occur due to military actions.

▪️Besides, there is a need for all parties to agree on the creation of a protective zone around the Zaporizhzhia NPP to avoid damage – the IAEA is ready to immediately start consultations leading to the urgent creation of such a nuclear safety zone.

▪️The Agency also stated that the shelling of the plant and its surroundings must be stopped to maintain the physical integrity of the NPP. The recorded consequences of the shelling at the plant were made public.

▪️Rafael Rossi said that while past strikes have not yet caused a nuclear emergency, they pose a constant threat to nuclear safety.

▪️The Agency says that the personnel ensures the safety at the ZNPP, but the presence of the military, equipment and representatives of Rosatom puts pressure on them and they are in “difficult circumstances”. Therefore, the IAEA recommends that all people and equipment that could affect the safety of the plant be removed from ZNPP.

Finns have been helping with training the Ukrainian army, maybe they've been giving advice on winter warfare

Aww I missed another one

You can tell the Russians are getting desperate when they up the propaganda.

We had another at the weekend about Mrs Zelenska

All that faux "what? Little old me" coupled with some quite deranged ranting a

It's interesting to see what the bot farms think will engage us little woman

I saw a bit of that Mrs Zelenska thread and it was vomit inducing. Thank you for stemming the tide of insanity on that one. The worst threads are the ones started by bots. It was like a parallel universe as you or another poster said. One example is trying to induce people to throw stones at Zelensky and his wife because they were on Vogue trying to raise awareness and stop Russian atrocities. The shills feed on the basest emotions and play to the crudest stereotypes.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 06/09/2022 20:10

There've been Russian trolls on MN for years, no surprise they're gracing us with their presence again now. Luckily the most recent crop are as thick as pigshit.

That thread really got under my skin, I know I know 😞 what happened, was it taken down? I’m not here for sympathy but I rarely post on Ukrainian threads anymore as I inevitably get worked up and emotional. For the same reason I can’t do Twitter. Thank you all for keeping this thread going, I am always reading.

@newnamenewnew your narrative is a very odd one, I fail to see what you are trying to achieve by posting your views on this thread?

The vast majority of your comments are those typical of Russian trolls, although you are more polite than most. Freedom of speech and all that but you won’t get much support for your opinions on this particular thread.

OwlsDance · 06/09/2022 20:20

RIA Novosti headline:
"Russia is awaiting for specification of the idea about creating safe zone around ZNPP from IAEA"

They meant get the fuck out of there, you morons.

Ijsbear · 06/09/2022 20:20

Glad to say that I missed that thread. Was it bad enough to be pulled?

OwlsDance · 06/09/2022 20:23

Lots of reports about Ukraine gaining some ground near Kharkiv!

Nope. Still there

I got a post deleted though Halo

PerkingFaintly · 06/09/2022 20:27

The peculiar poster on this thread has started sounding like the increasingly unhinged one on another thread this week. Complete with the "I've been watching Putin closely for years" + "Lil' ol' me knows nuffink about Russia".

From the St Petersburg troll-farm whistleblowers and other troll-watchers in recent years, we know that the troll farms (and thus their downstream amplifiers, witting and unwitting) try out particular lines; if one line seems to "take", the trollmasters move to concentrate on it.

On MN before the invasion started, I repeatedly spotted the line "Let Putin have Ukraine", often with some additional rhubarb about "Sleepy Joe".

Shortly after the beginning of the war, I noticed that for some reason they were trying out, "No need to be scared of Russia, it's not anything like it used to be before/after [can't remember which] the 90s".

This was a rubbish line and died out very fast!

I think this new one is a current line... Also rubbish!

I cannot seem to find the Zelenska thread anymore. The new mn search function is diabolical (i.e. non-existent). Since I did not post on it, there is no easy way for me to bring it up again.

The OP here is also a little suspect, but might just be on the sauce:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4625515-aibu-to-ask-what-your-next-move-would-be-if-you-were-putin

blueshoes · 06/09/2022 20:43

That's excellent and in addition to reports of Ukraine gaining a foothold in Luhansk. <wills UAF to keep going>

OwlsDance · 06/09/2022 20:43

Russian commandant in Berdyansk was assassinated. Car bomb. First they said he died, but now they're saying he's very badly injured.

If I was in those puppet posts now, I would be sweating very profusely indeed...

PerkingFaintly · 06/09/2022 20:47

Yep, blueshoes, that's the other thread with a peculiar OP I was talking about. Wasn't sure whether to link it or not.

blueshoes · 06/09/2022 20:52

Perkingfaintly why wouldn't you link? Not entirely sure of the etiquette here.

This was the mad one. I appear to have had more than one post removed Grin

PerkingFaintly · 06/09/2022 21:20

Oh I couldn't get straight in my own mind the benefits of linking vs cost of amplifying their message by driving more traffic to the thread or something.

I'm very dithery about this, and don't have a right answer, so please don't be guided by me!

Always the sign of a robust thread. Grin

@PerkingFaintly , ah, I understand now. I thought the Zelenska thread was toxic and chock full of rabid trolls with strangely strongly held and deeply unpleasant views (not LoveLarry, who was fending them off with a stick). And so happy to let it die.
