What makes a women look frumpy

Wherecanitbe · 20/08/2022 14:30

I am considering an overhaul of what I wear and my hairstyle. I am feeling a bit down and frumpy at the moment so thought this would be a positive change.

My overhaul is not going to be a drastic change , I cannot afford to purchase a whole new wardrobe of clothes, shoes and accessories. So please could you give me your items of clothing and / or hairstyles that in your opinion makes a women look frumpy.

This post is not meant to be offensive in anyway, I believe a person should wear whatever they wish regardless of whether another person thinks it's frumpy.

What makes a woman look frumpy? An unholy combination of stereotyping, misogyny and unrealistic expectations.

But you knew that.

I hope you find a style change that recharges your batteries - we all need a little boost now and then.

SaintHelena · 20/08/2022 14:38

Bad posture

Imtoooldforallthis · 20/08/2022 14:38

With me it's just a case of bring short and slightly overweight and approaching my 60's. Not a good combination.

Weight, hair and fussy clothes.

There is no such thing as a frumpy woman or a frumpy item of clothing.

Maybe make your next question should be something like, 'What shall I buy to give myself and my wardrobe a bit of a boost?'

MiniTheMinx · 20/08/2022 14:43

Bad posture
Over weight
Choosing safe clothing options to wear that might look better on your granny.

Burnamer · 20/08/2022 14:53

Cardigans.
unless you are young and lithe and going for the huge vibe, it’s impossible to look good in one.

Burnamer · 20/08/2022 14:54

Hygge not huge!

lljkk · 20/08/2022 14:56

MNers have such weird definitions of frumpy that I don't have a clue about the answer.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/08/2022 14:56

@MiniTheMinx Carry on. I'm sure you could be even more offensive, if you put your mind to it.

Who gives a shit really?

Dress how you want.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 20/08/2022 15:01

1 - bad posture as pp mentioned
2 - clothes that don't fit properly

But the OP does give a shit.

and frankly Id like to know as well as i am well known for my appalling dress sense even at the best of times (and these are not the best of times... looks at 3 stone overweight body).

Most of the clothes recommended on Mumsnet.

I think this woman looks fabulous.

Things that help to not look frumpy:

good haircut
good posture
clothes that fit and enhance your shape
accessories - shoes, bag, jewellery that compliment what you’re wearing/doing

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 20/08/2022 15:14

Well. Overweight people are automatically frumpy are they?

really? That’s me told.

Hydrangeatea · 20/08/2022 15:16

I felt frumpy when I was overweight, nothing looked good on me and I looked older. However I have seen some overweight women look incredible so maybe it is more about shape/confidence than weight itself.

I have lost over 3 stone and feel confident wearing long summer dresses which I would never have worn 2 years ago. I wore an oversized summer dress the other week that looked great with trainers and I felt 15 years younger than I am - 2 years ago I would have worn linen wide leg trousers and a linen top, both of which I actually hated as felt fat and incredibly frumpy in then.

I don't know the answer but for me, weight contributed massively.

Is that in response to my post? I am currently very frumpy. I am overweight right now but even when not i have no idea how to dress. I was never taught how to put clothes together and seem to have not quite learned. Despite the fact \i do follow some style blogs. I seem to have a chip missing when it comes to getting it right.

Anyway, I waa talking about me and not other people.

I’m overweight and wear cardigans all the time, I must be super frumpy! Cardigans with pockets are the best. Somewhere to put keys/phone when doing the school run on foot when it’s too warm for a coat/jacket. Practical but apparently frumpy…

SRS29 · 20/08/2022 15:18

Short cardigans, comfy sandles especially with straps and 'comfy' soles, knee length or longer shapeless skirts

SummerLobelia · 20/08/2022 15:19

@WillPowerLite posted a pic of a blogger I also follow.

unefemme.net/

I love how she puts things together and she really does ti carefully and with huge attention. I like her blog. I look like a pregnant mushroom though, sadly.

Breezycheesetrees · 20/08/2022 15:20

I do think it's mainly to do with posture, and how knackered you look. It is for me anyway. I've started exercising a lot this year and I think I look way less frumpy, even though I haven't particularly lost weight or changed how I dress.
