What makes a women look frumpy

Wherecanitbe · 20/08/2022 14:30

I am considering an overhaul of what I wear and my hairstyle. I am feeling a bit down and frumpy at the moment so thought this would be a positive change.

My overhaul is not going to be a drastic change , I cannot afford to purchase a whole new wardrobe of clothes, shoes and accessories. So please could you give me your items of clothing and / or hairstyles that in your opinion makes a women look frumpy.

This post is not meant to be offensive in anyway, I believe a person should wear whatever they wish regardless of whether another person thinks it's frumpy.

Very plain clothes with few accessories

But minimalism is stylish and elegant.

Large pendants. Shirred dresses. Buns.Fleeces. Gilets. Dresses with big flowers.
If you're overweight and wear stuff that shows it more then that makes you look frumpy such as sleeveless vests. Baggy trousers esp around the arse area!
I don't think being overweight in itself is frumpy. I've seen loads of overweight people who look great as they've managed to dress to suit them. Unfortunately I'm not one of those and am still trying to find my style!😂

You can look frumpy at any age. I have a friend who always has done but she says herself she dresses for her and doesn’t care what other people think and is happy as she is. She wears her hair back in a ponytail and wears skirts with anoraks.Massive holdall. No make up. Ever. She could look lovely with a few tweaks esp as her hair is naturally dead straight and she has high cheekbones. Her dds have tried to get her to buy new clothes, change her hair etc but no she's adamant and in a way I admire her for that.

I don’t agree with some of these items mentioned. Eg supermarket trainers. It’s irrelevant where the trainers are bought from. It’s the general look of the whole outfit that matters. I don’t agree that statement necklaces are intrinsically frumpy either. Pp mentioned gold jewellery -definitely not frumpy. That’s very on trend. Buns aren’t frumpy either. Fleeces… hmm…

Rosehugger · 23/08/2022 10:25

Yeah, you can get nice casual trainers/pumps in Sainsbury's.

I wear a fleece or gilet when walking the dog- horses for courses isn't it? Also both teenage DDs who are very into fashion both own a gilet.

Things change with fashion. A lot of items I'd have considered frumpy when I was younger like high necklines and midi skirts have been very fashionable recently, whereas I think someone would look more outdated in a short tight skirt and stilettos.

If she felt good and comfortable she wouldn't be posting. Does this help ? Not a jot
It doesn't really help a bunch of strangers telling someone that they personally find frumpy though.
You end up with a list as long as Mr Tickle's arm of so called frumpy things and at the end of the day it should be what you feel ok with, not what others tell you is or isn't ok

PumpkinSpiceGirl · 23/08/2022 13:01

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow re the plain clothes with few accessories, I meant like the pictures of the MP up thread - the fact she’s wearing plain blocky colours and nothing to liven up her outfit does her no favours and I say that as someone who likes quite a minimal look so often ends up in the same boat. I don’t know what the difference is between that and understated elegance but I know there is one!

Agree it's hard to define and OP has been roundly chastised for her use of the word 'frump' But equally the whole " i don't give a feck just wear what you want" brigade bouncing on here is very dismissive of the OP's concerns.

If it was that easy for her, why would she post?

And I'm always curious- if you enjoy clothes, fashion, considering what you wear- are you not also wearing what you want? Being comfortable? Not giving a fek?

It's not the opposite.

Nah just proves that you both think the same, doesn't prove you're right
You'd start an argument in an empty room

Nope just not going to put up with idiots like you trying to argue

I’m 41 and when I think of frumpy I think of wearing clothes that age you and are I’ll fitting. I still wear Nike high tops and like oversized sweatshirts but then wear them with skinny jeans. If I go out I might wear a dress but wear thin tights and heals.

I might get alot of hate but I think tunic tops are the worst

Women without much money to spend on their appearances look frumpy according to the the replies on this thread. My god, you should see the way some the working class mums at my DS’s school dress on the school run. No style at all. Yummy mummies in reverse. The impending economic juggernaut is only going to add to their frumpiness and misery. If only they knew how awful they looked, and the superior sisters on Mumsnet would judge them.

I’m not quite sure what to make of your response?

I’m “working class” and look shit hot on the school run. I look after myself, dress well and although I don’t have much money I picked up 3 jack wills items from the charity shop last week

Readaboutyourself · 23/08/2022 23:28

Ill fitting trousers that either flatten your backside or are too tight on the thighs
