What makes a women look frumpy

Wherecanitbe · 20/08/2022 14:30

I am considering an overhaul of what I wear and my hairstyle. I am feeling a bit down and frumpy at the moment so thought this would be a positive change.

My overhaul is not going to be a drastic change , I cannot afford to purchase a whole new wardrobe of clothes, shoes and accessories. So please could you give me your items of clothing and / or hairstyles that in your opinion makes a women look frumpy.

This post is not meant to be offensive in anyway, I believe a person should wear whatever they wish regardless of whether another person thinks it's frumpy.

Being overweight

BlueKaftan · 20/08/2022 15:23

to avoid the frumpiness that can sometimes accompany being overweight I wear colourful accessories and handbags. Also a damn good bra and highlights.

GuerlainHo · 20/08/2022 15:25

Why do people have to make some threads so political all the time…

im with you OP, we all have those moments in our life where we feel abit ‘Blah’ and want a revamp. No hurt to ask other’s opinions.

I think I agree with posture, dressing improper for your weight, hair not taken care of or lacklustre, ‘granny glasses’ can also be seen as frumpy too. Also, obviously not taking care of your skin (obvious dryness/ bags under eyes)

I think a bad hair style can make someone look more frumpy than their clothes. I can wear the same outfit, but feel fabulous or frumpy depending on whether I’ve bothered to blow dry and style my hair or not.

I think stylish can and should still be comfy.
But comfort over style tends to be frumpy.

Black leggings worn as trousers, shapeless tops - particularly sleeveless, clothes that just look worn and are losing their colour. Lack of colour or something eye popping in general. Lack of accessories. That’s what comes to mind, but minor adjustments can always make a difference so I wouldn’t put any of those items on a definite ‘avoid’ list.

Nothing

Comedycook · 20/08/2022 15:26

Twee clothing....like a silly appliqué flower sewn onto a plain top.

A bit of makeup works wonders and an outfit that has been thought about. Have a look on Pinterest for some outfit ideas and think about what suits your lifestyle.

I recently had a colour consultation which has given me a real lift. I know what colours and patterns suit my features and instantly look like I’ve had a decent nights sleep.

Being overweight

Nonsense! Overweight people can look fabulous too.
OP I’m no style guru but I’d say, start with your hair.

notanothertakeaway · 20/08/2022 15:27

I think grey hair looks frumpy

RichardMarxisinnocent · 20/08/2022 15:28

comfy sandles especially with straps

I must have misunderstood what you mean, as surely all sandals, comfy or not, have straps, otherwise how on earth do they stay on your feet?

MrsDooDaa · 20/08/2022 15:29

Poor diet and lack of exercise.

And I think you're talking total shite. HTH.

SudocremOnEverything · 20/08/2022 15:31

Do you know what makes you look frumpy (when you look at yourself in the mirror)? A lack of self confidence.

It’s really not what you wear. It’s how you carry yourself and that starts with how you feel.

pick some clothes that make you feel good and you’ll find that confidence is very much not frumpy.

And who cares what anyone else thinks?

Looks like we can add ageism to the below from a PP

An unholy combination of stereotyping, misogyny and unrealistic expectations.

No @SummerLobelia that most definitely wasn’t a reply for you.

that was to MiniTheMinx.

I know I’m not at my best but the thought of someone actually branding me frumpy for being fat really rankled me.

JackieDaws · 20/08/2022 15:34

Thérèse Coffey is the epitome of frump.

Wouldloveanother · 20/08/2022 15:34

Indoor scarves
Cardigans
Patterned tops
bootcut jeans unless you’re 18 and built like a whippet
Breton tops
Tunics
Jeans worn with black leather ‘mum’ boots

Huntswomanonthemove · 20/08/2022 15:35

Untidy grey hair. My hair always looks untidy, it's just the way it is. I wish I could have a sleek grey bob.

OnceRuralNowUrbanbliss · 20/08/2022 15:36

When I hit forty I felt the same I started wearing make up every day (including brightish reddish lippy) had my long hair cut into a layered bob with highlights and bought some well fitting new clothes as had shopped for comfort and cheap from charity shops for too many years.

I now only wear black, white or navy with a fairly simple wardrobe but most things match. I also wear mid length skirts with a medium heel (shoes or boots) if I'm leaving the house.

Started exercising frequently and regularly too.

WillPowerLite · 20/08/2022 15:36

'Frumpy' is just a horrible, woman-hating term. Anything that suggests you are a middle-aged or older woman is 'frumpy'. Some common symptoms include: being overweight, looking tired, grey hair, ill-fitting clothing (because it is designed for younger, svelter folk), owning feet that hurt or swell, poor posture. Ya know, normal side-effects of womanhood.

Plenty of good blogs are out there that showcase plus-size fashion and help with hairstyle choices. Getting lots of sleep (if you can!) and exercising will help you to look and feel better.

There are no 'forbidden' items because you can always find people who rock 'frumpy' clothes. Google Michelle Obama and cardigans, for example. (Though she is a goddess and we must not compare ourselves.)

I hope you find some inspiration and some pieces that suit and make you feel great. :) But don't listen to anyone telling you it's weight, or comfy shoes, or exhaustion. That's a rigged game. Don't play.

blacksax · 20/08/2022 15:39

I don't feel frumpy. And, quite frankly, I don't give a flying fuck whether other people think I look frumpy or not.

This with bells on.

I totally get wanting to make the best of yourself and fancying a boost but let's not just identify common traits of ageing and saying that they're inherently 'frumpy'. Frumpy is just shorthand for unfuckable because of age and we shouldn't use it about other women.

And what makes a man look ‘frumpy’ or the equivalent? Women can be such bitches.

aaah okay, I was worried I had accidentally caused offence. (I have accidentally caused offence twice this week IRL wheras usually I am much more socially ept and it's worrying me a bit because I seem socially 'off').

FWIW One of my colleagues is very overweight. She looks incredible all the time. She wears dresses like Kirstie Allsop, with juge statement jewellery and she has a steel grey pixie cut. It's definitely attitude. She looks amazing and I find myself studying her as to how she does it. I tend to wear navy blue to blend into the background!!

Badly fitting jeans
slip on trainers
t shirts with Marvel cartoons on or ‘funny’ slogans
receding hairlines with comb overs 🤮
baggy hoodies/skate shoes on men over 21 - tragic
