Hi,

Tagging along. I've swapped puddle suits for swim suits but am already missing our regular weekly groups now the holidays are here.

Not much happening around here at the moment and the impending hosepipe ban is going to be a frustrating obstacle to any plans of cheap days at home in the garden.

PlentyMorePebbles · 07/08/2022 21:15

I’m in. Mine is 3, nearly 4 so more of a preschooler. She basically destroys the house when she’s bored, which is often. Plus something really stressful has happened here so I’ve been very distracted.

I had a tidy/sort out of the toys today and did a bit of a toy rotation. I’ve also tried to limit the amount of toy scattering around the house by having less out.

We’re planning on joining the library this week and the weather is good so will hopefully have a trip to the beach (long drive though).

Chocolatetrifle · 07/08/2022 21:31

Thank you @Motherofmonsters for the new thread. Currently calling 111 to find out why I've not had a call back for 6 hours....

I’d like to join in please. I’ve glanced at these threads in the past but definitely got to the age where I need ideas and solidarity. DD just turned 2.

Park trip yesterday and different park today - today’s one with bonus duck feeding and a walk through the little woods/ along the stream nearby. Resulted in a danger nap but luckily didn’t seem to make too much difference to bedtime. Need to get more
organised on the taking sandwiches/ a picnic front as ended up splurging £20 in the cafe for three of us.

Im working three days this week but then childminder closed for rest of the holidays so that’s going to be interesting.

Chocolatetrifle · 08/08/2022 06:35

So it's been 15 hours since I called 111 for ds1 and nothing back! So we will try the impossible task of getting an appointment at the GP. I think it's tonsilitis again. Do they just want people to turn up at a&e to try to get to see someone?

Motherofmonsters · 08/08/2022 13:04

How have you got on @Chocolatetrifle have they contacted you/did you get an appointment?

Welcome @Beees @PlentyMorePebbles @AliasGrape.

I definitely need to sort through our toys and put them in rotation. DS loves the library, though he just picks random books and plays on a little train seat they have there.

Sounds like you've got some lovely parks near you @AliasGrape it soon adds up going into cafes doesn't it. I've fully embraced the slightly sad warm cheese sandwiches.

I dropped the kids down my mum's house this morning so I can hoover my car (bin on wheels) I've got my MOT tomorrow which I'm dreading. I hope it doesn't need too much work doing. We're home now for the afternoon, I did think about park but it's boiling today

@Motherofmonsters yes , got an appointment this morning at the GP and antibiotics for tonsilitis. Someone from 111 called me back 19 hours after I initially called apologising, as they still did not any gp available to call me so it's a good job we got the appointment. Anyway, that's a rant for a whole other thread, save to say what a shambles of a service!

Hope everyone is having a good day so far.

Welcome 🤗 to the new posters.

Hope you manage to sort something out, our practice is also impossible to get appointments at, got a better chance of winning the lottery or seeing a flying pig.

It's too hot here too I'm slowly melting.

AliasGrape · 08/08/2022 14:58

@Chocolatetrifle glad you got seen and got antibiotics, hope your DS is feeling better soon.

Thank you for the welcome @Motherofmonsters ! Good luck for the MOT. My car is also a bin on wheels although funnily enough my father in law has just shouted up to me asking where my keys are, I've a suspicion he's going to do something with the tyres but occasionally he will wash it when I'm here. God love him.

I'm trying to work upstairs at the in laws. I've started freelancing since DD was about 1, not full time just equivalent of about 2 to 3 days a week, we currently only have one day a week with childminder though increasing it to 2 in September, and the rest I squeeze in evenings/ weekends/ when in-laws are available and offer to have her which is usually Mondays about 11-4ish (so I shouldn't really be using the time on mumsnet but brain is fried so taking 5 mins). DD was a bit out of sorts this morning but seems perky enough now, can here her babbling on about raspberries downstairs.

Before DD I was an early years teacher (maybe to return one day?? Not decided) For a brief spell it looked like I would channel all that knowledge, enthusiasm and ideas into DD, we had a tuffspot tray, I made treasure baskets, we did messy play. It lasted a little while and peaked when she was about 11 months, been a steady decline since then and can't remember when I did anything with the tuffspot other than pour her hand me down and mismatched megablocks into it occasionally.

Wanted to take her to a 'baby splash' swimming session this week but can't make the times due to a smear test one day and waiting for someone to look at the washing machine the next. Oh what a fun week haha.

When it was really hot a few weeks ago I did have an inspired moment of making lots of different coloured and shaped ice cubes, froze flowers and leaves and stuff in some of them. Tipped them into her tuff tray with scoops and stuff. She glanced briefly at them before demanding to go inside and watch Puffin Rock and they kind of just melted unobserved in the corner of the garden. I might try freezing some toys or something in there next time. What really is a big hit at the moment is sticker books, I'm forever looking out for cheap ones of those.

We also have quite a few cheap bubble wands which were reduced in Asda, but that basically ends up being her screaming that she wants to hold it, me giving in and her pouring it all over the floor then crying that 'bubbas gone now'. So they weren't quite the investment I'd hoped.

AliasGrape · 08/08/2022 15:00

can HEAR* her that should be. And I even confessed to being a teacher too, the shame! I did say that my brain was fried to be fair.

squishymamma · 08/08/2022 15:00

Hello everyone,

Took me a while to find this thread, putting it down to baby brain as I have been losing my phone multiple times a day too.

Hope DS is feeling better @Chocolatetrifle, shocking that it took so long for them to get back to you.

Welcome to the new posters! I have DS1 who is 2 and a half and DS2 who is 7 months. Second week back at work after mat leave this week, DH on paternity leave but I’m still doing most housework…

DS1 is back at nursery now, not sure if he needs to drop his nap as it’s taking forever to get him to sleep but if he doesn’t nap he’s grumpy and tired by 4pm. We’re trying to limit it to max 2 hours and see if that helps.

Happy Monday!

squishymamma · 08/08/2022 15:02

@AliasGrape so many good ideas there! It’s so annoying when you put effort into stuff and then they just don’t care…

Lostthetastefordahlias · 08/08/2022 15:08

Hello! Hope Ds ok @Chocolatetrifle. Welcome to new posters, I am a sporadic poster on this thread, I have 4yr old Dd and Ds is nearly 2.
I agree about those irritating bubble wands @AliasGrape ! We have this peppa pig non spill bucket and its been brilliant, ds spends ages wandering round blowing bubbles with it.
Too hot here in Essex again, feels like we are wasting today which is annoying when I am at work tomorrow, but everyone is tired and hot.

Trapped Toddler Parents: Surviving the summer
BertieBotts · 08/08/2022 15:10

Oh I forgot about these threads! I now have an almost 4yo and almost 1yo and am (just) surviving summer XD

Today I've been attempting to clean the kitchen while they attack each other. Also melting down at the state of my teenager's bedroom 😱he is attempting to clean that which has taken all day.

BertieBotts · 08/08/2022 15:19

I have recently bought them a balance board which I absolutely love and recommend - it has been used in the following ways and we've only had it a couple of days:

Ramp to crawl over/slide down/run over/jump on
Bridge for cars (over and under)
Tunnel to slither through (DS2 just fits)
Rocking chair/seat thing
Standing up rocking thing
Rocking crib for baby doll
Roll cars or balls down it in U way up
As a kind of stage/platform
Obstacle to jump over
Like those see-saws in dog agility

AliasGrape · 08/08/2022 16:42

Love the sound of a balance board Bertie - that sounds like a good investment.

Definitely need to look out for that bubble bucket dahlias

DD got nearly £200 birthday cash, which was very generous of people - quite a big family on my side even though my parents are gone, so it added up from lots of fivers in cards. I want to spend it on something she will actually use and enjoy, but it's hard to guess what that might be! Thinking maybe a balance bike - I'm very swayed by the pretty vintage style ones that cost nearly that much, but would make more sense to get a cheap version and see if she takes to it, then bung the rest in her savings. Any recommendations gratefully received.

Chocolatetrifle · 08/08/2022 17:39

Welcome back @BertieBotts.

@AliasGrape you have loads of fantastic ideas! But yes, you can put so much effort it and then they are just not interested at all.

Thank you everyone for the good wishes for ds1. He's had two doses of antibiotics now, they always send him crazier than usual.

For the new posters I have two boys aged 4.10 and 2.8. I part-time freelance too ( legal world) was a solicitor before my two came along.

Today we've ive been indoors apart from the Dr and chemist trips and we've watched YouTube mixed with cbeebies and dS2 put my sandal on the patio and weed on it. Not the best day.

Chocolatetrifle · 08/08/2022 17:46

Sorry for typos too, I have a tired fried brain too and yes agree bubble wands are a good idea in theory but only if we do the bubbles, why do they always pour them immediately ?

BertieBotts · 08/08/2022 17:57

The Decathlon balance bikes are good.

BertieBotts · 08/08/2022 17:57

Otherwise Puky or Woom are the "best" ones in Germany.

Chocolatetrifle · 08/08/2022 18:04

Thank you for reminding me about freezing toys, have just put some small items in balloons and put them in the freezer for tomorrow.

Mine never took to the balance bike and preferred a three wheeled trike to start with.

AliasGrape · 08/08/2022 18:06

Thanks Bertie I’ll check those out.

squishymamma · 08/08/2022 18:51

We have this bike/scooter www.argos.co.uk/product/3035845?clickPR=plp:1:1

It's genius because it grows with them, DS1 loves it. Not a balance bike i guess but can highly recommend!

AliasGrape · 09/08/2022 15:29

That does look clever @squishymamma !

How’s everyone doing in the heat? I made muffins from the what mummy makes book with DD this morning, they came out ok and it killed half an hour. Then went to friends house to watch her DD as friend had a hospital appointment, the girls are a week apart in age. DD was not particularly great last time we were there, whereas friend’s DD is generally an angel, so I was apprehensive but it was mostly fine and they pottered about in the garden which was quite shady luckily. It did descended into running a loop around the house competing to see who can make the most high pitch shriek towards the end though. Also meant DD didn’t nap so now I’ve got to be on guard against any danger naps until a hopefully early bedtime!

Always find this bit of the day tricky and usually resort to TV, especially on the days she’s not had a nap because I’m shattered by this point as is she, and I feel out of ideas and just in need of a little downtime. And DD is clearly tired but her response is just to repeatedly demand snacks.

Chocolatetrifle · 09/08/2022 15:52

Hi everyone, I feel like resigning from parenting today.

We've not done much because ds1 is still not 100 percent and I had to cancel a playdate meet-up. We just nipped to the post office this morning, the frozen balloon dig for the toys inside didn't go down well. Unfortunately it has just been both my boys fighting and generally getting my back up all day.

I'm going to have an early night tonight and hopefully ds1 will be better enough tomorrow so we can do our camping in the garden fun I had planned.

But for today, I've really had enough. I've put the Tele on too @AliasGrape.
