Agree Quia it’s very undemocratic and unMinisterial behaviour. Unfortunately the Committees’ powers seem to be quite limited to force attendance.

As with so many things with lack of responsibility and probity in this disgusting grubby Johnson government they are behaving like Mike Ashley from Sports Direct with their contemptuous attitude to select committees holding them to account.

Do we really need to have to start putting in legally enforceable rules to make sure PMs, Ministers and MPs have to carry out their jobs fairly and honestly? Maybe they could just try working with a sense of responsibility and having a few personal and professional moral standards instead? It’s so depressing how they continue to behave despite so many of them saying that Boris Johnson did not behave with appropriate standards.

I’m going to write to my MP about this because it’s definitely a Tory party specific problem. It seems like an absolute symptom of low level corruption spreading about the peer group because we still have a lawbreaking and personally amoral prime minister in charge who has not resigned, has instead set his own terms for leaving, and will not be punished in any way and if Liz Truss gets in, Johnson will probably be back in the cabinet within days or weeks.

Institute for Government sets out some of the limitations here:

I think we do. The “good chaps” principle isn’t working any more.

Meanwhile in the US, ex-President Trump continues to set the mould for his own kind of dangerous, disgusting behaviour, shows no shame for what he’s done and keeps talking about his plans to return:

Agreed.

This is why we can’t have nice things.

I stayed up and watched the hearings on NBC. Absolutely fascinating, compelling, horrifying but not surprising.

There are more similarities between Trump and Johnson behaviour than dissimilarities for sure.

It's essential. Now Big Dog's peed all over us, and our wonderful Constitution, it will become accepted practice if things are left to the conscience of those that have none. At least we're still alarmed by it and consider it wrong. 5 more years and nobody will so much as raise an eyebrow.

This is worrying

www.theguardian.com/global-development/2022/jul/22/european-countries-pressurise-uk-over-removal-of-abortion-commitments-liz-truss

and I was reading last night what freeports and charter cities are - which was somewhat horrifying and why they are so keen to remove human rights.

...I feel we are sleepwalking into some sort of country where people are being reduced to little more than worker commodities

The Telegraph are reporting that BJ could lose his seat if he is banned from parliament for misleading the HoC over partygate.

The committee investigating Mr Johnson has been told that it only needs to prove he “misled” the House, not that he “deliberately” did so
That makes it easier for the MPs on the committee to find him guilty

On top of that, the Commons speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, said that if the PM is banned for 10 or more sitting days, he could face a by-election in his seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip

It would then be up to Mr Johnson’s constituents
If 10 per cent of them sign a petition calling for his “recall”, the PM would have to fight a by-election
The report is expected at the end of the year.

As expected, his loyalists are up in arms with this.

Personally, it would be a fitting end to him AFAIC. Doubtful it will happen though.

I also read it's going to be under oath. Will he be able to curtail the lying if lying comes with a prison sentence? I hope not

I'm proper sobbing over that. It's my home city although I no longer live in the UK. I can't bear the thought of anyone going hungry and when I look at my children my heart breaks for the suffering so many other children are having to endure. If a country doesn't care about its children enough to ensure they're fed the it's a failed state.

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 15:31

This is getting very scary now. I’m genuinely frightened about where we’re going to end up this winter.

balalake · 22/07/2022 15:40

Mr Johnson will not be forced into a by-election. I think he will resign his seat within days of leaving number 10, and then not appear before any committee at all.

As for Liz Truss, amongst the reasons why I want her to lose is that Gavin Williamson will probably be given a job. Possibly the worst government minister since Chris Grayling.

Roussette · 22/07/2022 15:51

That's interesting. But given his character is very Trump like, is resigning not like 'losing' to him and I'm sure he can't bear that. I imagined he was going to hang around like a bad smell being as obstructive as possible.

However... he is not good in Committees/Hearings. He can't handle it. He has no audience for his bluster and prevarication.

Those children who receive free school meals , do their parents still get some help towards food over the holidays? Or has that stopped now ? I remember Marcus Rashford the footballer was involved last year in a drive to carry on with this.
I saw on Facebook that some supermarket cafes and other restaurants are doing kids meal deals over the holidays , but that isn't any good long term.
With food costs rising people won't put as much into the donation trolleys. It is a desperate situation all round.

Blossomtoes · 22/07/2022 15:59

Oh dear, this isn’t great news for Sunak, Truss or Patel. From the Telegraph.

Rwanda can accommodate just 200 Channel migrants – and can’t stop them returning to Britain
Officials say they only have one hostel, with ‘a couple of hundred’ spaces, ready to receive asylum seekers from the UK.

Notonthestairs · 22/07/2022 16:02

"NEW Numbers going up. As of 11am today 7,000 Tory members have now written to the party chairman demanding a vote on Boris Johnson's defenestration by his MPs. "

twitter.com/christopherhope/status/1550423898969280514?s=21&t=pczQBPlbdYkBi2wbwzybqw

All a bit desperate.

Well that sounds like good value for money. £120 million already spent for 200 migrants.

Conservatives = good with other peoples money. 🙄

Not to mention It is anticipated the Government will pay a further £12,000 per migrant for hostel rent – £60 a day – resettlement, training and language costs.

You really couldn’t make this up. They’re making The Thick of It look like a documentary.

Rishi Sunak is promising to privatise channel 4. Privatising it offers absolutely zero public benefit and will also completely destroy the current Channel 4 commitments to regional tv production (… so the very opposite of ‘levelling up’..)

.:: meanwhile foodbanks in the UK are the busiest they have ever been and are reporting lowered donations because the public are skint. What is the Boris Johnson/ Liz/ Rishi Westminster government doing about this absolutely shameful situation?

…Nothing.

Food banks warn they are struggling to keep up with demand

Who of the general public would have ever voted for paid up Conservative party members to make up shit rules that will mean that we’re stuck with a new Prime Minister that people who don’t even live in the UK but have paid their subs to the Tories Hmm have voted in. What the actual fuck is going on here?!
Who exactly is this new prime minister supposed to represent? What an enormous conflict of interest they will have. WTF.

We need a general election right away. It’s totally undemocratic.
