Why the surprise on Liz Truss going back on having Boris Johnson in her government (if she did do this ? ) She has rowed back on her political views ( she was previously lib dem ) and is now a ' leaver ' after backing remain. She obviously only has beliefs she thinks will enhance her own career , so I'm sure she'll have some argument for having him close by instead of on the back benches. (Maybe a case of keeping your friends close and enemies closer? )
Rishi is obviously going for the long game. Give tax breaks just before the election and after tackling inflation !

tobee · 21/07/2022 16:42

It doesn't matter whether the skilled workers can be found or indeed employed. All that matters is the statement.

Johnson will be loving everyone madly speculating what "for now" meant and whether Truss is his mouthpiece etc etc.

DowningStreetParty · 21/07/2022 16:59

Liz ‘Continuity Boris’ Truss should be unelectable by Tory Party members, on this recent statement alone, surely:

‘Ms Truss said she would have liked Mr Johnson to continue as prime minister despite promising to depart from his economic platform.’

BBC: Conservative leadership: Liz Truss says Tory economic policy choked growth
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-62250027

She’s got zero credibility. And Boris will reappear if she gets it. It’s shameful.

Grin no just my memory failing! (I hope).

I've just checked and Truss's campaign is lead by Williamson. Kwarteng has also been prominent in her campaign. Coffrey and IDS are clearly angling for jobs and I suppose various ERG other members will have been promised ministerial roles. The Cabinet might not look that different.

Is that Gavin Williamson???

Truss and Sunak are already planning their cabinets

Truss:

Chancellor - Simon Clarke or Kwasi Kwarteng

Foreign sec - James Cleverly or Tom Tugendhat

Home sec - Therese Coffey under consideration

Dorries & Rees-Mogg would both get cabinet roles

twitter.com/steven_swinford/status/1550011911609229312?s=21&t=X-IzeeaWjXAmIgAXrr94xg

Cleverly is already cocking up Education, which is pretty awesome considering he's only been there a couple of weeks. God forbid that any idiot lets him loose on foreign policy.

Quia · 21/07/2022 17:21

Just as I don't fancy taking a ferry run by P&O's agency staff, I definitely don't fancy getting on a train driven by an agency driver or having my case in court argued by an underpaid agency barrister. Where do they get these idiotic ideas from?

Echobelly · 21/07/2022 17:23

As it's going to the membership (about 0.3% of the population), it'll be Truss I think. Not because of racism, but because she's more right-wing and reactionary than Sunak. A shame as at least Sunak would probably not have been embarrassing.

User135644 · 21/07/2022 17:25

What is the appeal of Truss? I really don't get it. She's very socially awkward, but so was Gordon Brown. He was at least intelligent and an effective politician, albeit with poor leadership skills. Truss is neither intelligent or competent and a former Lib Dem and Remainer that has been foisted in by the far right ERG and ever radical Daily Mail. Just seems odd to me.

Sunak just seems a poor man's Cameron (or rich in terms of material wealth).

User135644 · 21/07/2022 17:29

Lottie4 · 20/07/2022 20:30

We're team Sunak as we believe he has a better long term plan. Also, Truss has Rees-Mogg and Dorries on her side, and I certainly wouldn't be voting Conservative if there part of the top team.

Sunak has nothing new to offer but is at least a serious politician. It'll just be a rehash of the miserable Cameron years, only with much more difficult economic challenges.

Truss will just be more of the Johnsonian chaos and bluster and empty-headedness.

Either way i'd be amazed if they won another general election, even with the English's Stockholm Syndrome for the Tories.

Has Cleverly ever not cocked up everything he’s ever touched? If ever there was someone whose name was a misnomer…

balalake · 21/07/2022 17:51

Nadine Dorries and Jacob Rees-Mogg are going to the House of Lords was my understanding, and both would not serve under a new Prime Minister.

The rest of the resignation honours list will make Harold Wilson's so-called 'Lavender list' look saintly, no doubt.

Notonthestairs · 21/07/2022 18:11

"Is that Gavin Williamson???"

It is indeed. Ex Chief Whip Williamson and his little book of MPs misdeeds.

itsgettingweird · 21/07/2022 19:41

Ex education minister who cocked that up too!

But somehow managed to also get an honours Confused

Good grief. Says a lot about why she was trailing for so long in the original votes. The general view was that Williamson had to know where Johnson's skeletons were buried, what does he know about Truss?

the80sweregreat · 21/07/2022 22:20

I did read the other week that if you follow Gavin Williamson it will lead you to the new leader and voila , it looks like she's in the lead !l.

What has he got on people ?

Roussette · 22/07/2022 06:51

The Telegraph are reporting that BJ could lose his seat if he is banned from parliament for misleading the HoC over partygate.

The committee investigating Mr Johnson has been told that it only needs to prove he “misled” the House, not that he “deliberately” did so
That makes it easier for the MPs on the committee to find him guilty

On top of that, the Commons speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, said that if the PM is banned for 10 or more sitting days, he could face a by-election in his seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip

It would then be up to Mr Johnson’s constituents
If 10 per cent of them sign a petition calling for his “recall”, the PM would have to fight a by-election
The report is expected at the end of the year.

As expected, his loyalists are up in arms with this.

Personally, it would be a fitting end to him AFAIC. Doubtful it will happen though.

Sounds like a perverted version of the Wizard of Oz.

Checking in!

Downnotdown · 22/07/2022 07:40

It seems that Priti Patel has been very quiet over the last little while. I don't recall reading anything about her during the leadership battle, and very little prior to that during the fall of Boris.

I wonder if she's thinking that if she keeps her mouth shut she's hoping she might get to keep her current role under the next PM?

Very much so. Personally I think her days are numbered.

This is bad, very bad. He's very polite but you can sense his frustration.

"I find it frustrating that I've not met her... I think the home secretary should speak to me"
Independent Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration David Neal has not met Home Secretary Priti Patel since being appointed in his role in March 2021

It’s so ironic that they gleefully pounced on Mordaunt for going missing in action when Patel, Zahawi and Kwarteng have all dodged scrutiny committees in the last week. Either they think we haven’t noticed or we’re stupid.

The government have consistently demonstrated for the past two years and maybe more that they think we are stupid. but Jeremy Corbyn Keir had a beer look a squirrel Boris knows what a woman is Ah got it, I don't like Keirs voice.

Brexit is going well project fear

Critical incident called in Dover blame the French
The cost of Brexit has quickly risen by nearly £10 billion. Sssh don't tell anyone

Quia · 22/07/2022 09:33

This business of dodging scrutiny committees is going to become habitual if they're not careful. It would be great if there was a rule that anyone who dodges it without a very good excuse loses the job.
