Badenoch seems to have u-turned on her nett zero target u-turn

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2022 10:44

She’s going to get very dizzy with all these 180 degree turns.

Notonthestairs · 19/07/2022 10:46

The VONC result was never in doubt. They won by a margin. Ellwood flying the Conservative flag elsewhere. No need to remove the Whip at all.
Petty & vindictive indeed.

Video from Nov 21

This is a Conservative MP questioning Johnson over defence spending. An incredible exchange with @Tobias_Ellwood. No grasp of the specifics, a refusal to answer or even engage, bad-tempered, hectoring.

I must watch that again. Is that the one where he insisted there would never be land armies, tank battles and boots on the ground at war in Europe, those days are gone. It's all cyber attacks so we don't need to invest in the Army.

Well done on that predicition.

He hates Ellwood. He's being vindictive

Pippa Crerar

Hearing Tobias Ellwood wasn't only Tory MP who missed vote because he was away on foreign trip - yet appears to be only one sanctioned.

If you also consider speed at which whips responded cf during Chris Pincher scandal, hard to escape impression move motivated by vengeance.

Notonthestairs · 19/07/2022 11:04

Vengeance and a handy way to remove a vote from Mordaunt. If she loses by a single vote I'd imagine there will be considerable annoyance.

Roussette · 19/07/2022 11:05

Here is Britain First's statement to all members instructing them to vote for Badenoche. They call themselves 'infiltrators of the conservative party'.

Ellwood on top of his game re defence. Johnson looked a blustering fool in that exchange and he's not forgiven Ellwood. Also Ellwood has a moral compass unlike Johnson and the rest of the crooked cabal.

borntobequiet · 19/07/2022 11:21

Ellwood is also known for his physical courage, demonstrated in the Westminster terror attack.

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2022 11:26

This is exactly the same as sacking Gove, isn’t it? Vindictive and spiteful. Can Johnson actually do this given that he’s no longer party leader? Can a leaderless party remove the whip?

HarrietPierce · 19/07/2022 11:28

"Ellwood is also known for his physical courage, demonstrated in the Westminster terror attack."

Exactly. He did his best to save the life of PC Palmer and was called a hero.

DowningStreetParty · 19/07/2022 12:00

Wow OK. So doing your job as an MP is enough to get the whip removed if the timing doesn’t suit Boris Johnson, when being a serial sexual assaulter is not enough to get it removed?

How dare Boris Johnson insult a Supreme Court judge? Who does he think he is, that’s an outrageous thing to do as a PM. Very sinister. He just needs to go and now.

Roussette · 19/07/2022 12:14

Apparently Pincher has had the Whip temporarily suspended so some reports say.

Ellwood was actually in Moldova working, which is why he didn't vote.

A mean and nasty BJ hit out. I wish to god he'd gone as soon as he was voted out, he is going to do a lot of damage between now and Sept. 5th. Alongside fulfilling all his bucket list at the taxpayers expense.

Two have happened.

"PM who misses COBRA meeting because he is in Chequers preparing for his farewell party withdraws whip from MP because he is in Chișinău meeting the President of Moldova on the Ukraine crisis. Sounds about right."

He missed multiple COBRA meetings. He missed one to on a jolly in a Typhoon.

DowningStreetParty · 19/07/2022 12:14

Johnson returned the whip to 10 of the 19 MPs that he punished for voting the wrong way on Brexit in September 2019 when he was a relatively new PM and he thought needed to kick out Brexit-moderate and experienced and intelligent Conservative MPs from the party. That’s arguably where a lot of his problems today have come from because he has consistently surrounded himself with much lower ability people who he promoted only because he could count on them to be loyal, whatever he did. Not a healthy way to run a country.

Doing that Brexit purge in 2019 was an outrageous thing to do, but Johnson’s got form for using removing the whip as a weapon to set an example to others. It looks like its about immediate punishment and not actually about principle with him, if in many cases he later reverses it.

Blossomtoes · 19/07/2022 12:18

He wouldn’t recognise principle if he fell over it.

Roussette · 19/07/2022 12:21

@DowningStreetParty
Great post.

I have never known such an over promoted under achieving inept Cabinet in my life. And I've seen a few.

There were Tories who I actually really respected. I might not have agreed with them but they were fine people who had the courage of their convictions and didn't lie, flip flop, and mislead.

You missed John Major @Roussette. Please can we have him back.

DowningStreetParty · 19/07/2022 13:02

Same here Rousette and agreed Blossomtoes- I say all of that as a Labour voter!

But we all need the highest calibre possible people as MPs in opposition and in government running the country, with political experience (and non-Parliamentary real world expertise ideally too). We need more MPs with enough about them to be able to challenge their leader if they’re behaving like reckless authoritarian pseudo-Trumps.

We can’t keep relying on the House of Lords to save us from their shit, because the active and intelligent Peers are not getting any younger. And the heavily politically-appointed ones are entirely predictable.

We need decent MPs to vote for because having these populist, sleazy, corrupt and stupid ones are really destroying public trust and engagement in Parliamentary politics and democracy as a whole. The very last thing that we need to happen given all of the shit that’s coming our way nationally and globally in the foreseeable.

Roussette · 19/07/2022 13:10

Yes to this.
We've got Ian Botham, Michelle Mone (currently under investigation for siphoning off a lot of PPE dosh), and Lord Lebedev of Siberia, Boris's brother, Tory donors, and anyone who has done BJ a favour.

We're doomed.

Wonder if Ellwood will cross the floor?

Another decent purged Tory, I mean.

HarrietPierce · 19/07/2022 13:16

Rory Stewart was very intelligent and sensible but he's independent now. I also wonder if Ellwood would cross the floor.

I went to a live Q&A session with him. I was sat feet away. He's a very intelligent knowledgeable bloke... and interesting too.

Jess Phillips was there too... she's a feisty woman Grin
