I can understand the wish to sweep it all under the carpet. He's leaving so what does it matter?
However, lies matter. They have consequences, not least the erosion of standards.
We are right to hang on to some expectations of propriety and transparency.
Johnson won't be out of the headlines anytime soon. The Privileges Committee will continue to investigate whether he misled Parliament. The Covid Inquiry will review the Governments handling of events. Pincher is still in office. The Mail will continue to write stories rewriting history, ignoring facts and positioning Johnson as a victim.
5th September is one step.
Besides which you'd be a fool to think Johnson will feel a great deal of loyalty to the incoming PM (whoever it is). He'll continue down whatever path suits him best.
