@jgw1 I don't disagree , but they look diverse on the surface and that is what the press are focusing on - how great the tories are that they are so diverse .

It's worth looking at the Shadow Cabinet. Not as lacking in diversity as people like to say.

To be fair Daniel Craig wasn’t a reservist for nine years, Mordaunt was. I like laying into Tories as much as the next woman but that tweet really doesn’t reflect reality.

But did she ever actually fight in the Navy as claimed?

I explained that too 🙄

Carole Cadwalladr
Boris Johnson and the Lebedevs: how I exposed the prime minister’s defining scandal

Why is Cadwalladr suggesting that Lebedev named his pet Borzoi (Russian wolfhound) after Boris Johnson?
"There was so much that was already an open secret..."
"The fact that Evgeny owned a pet wolf he’d christened Boris"

Her link doesn't even back up her suggestion and Lebedev has previously explained that his wolfhound is named after Boris Yeltsin;

"my pet wolf, Boris, is named after Russia’s first democratically elected president (Boris Yeltsin), not my friend the Prime Minister"

Incidentally, the Borzoi in Lady and the Tramp is also named "Boris" (in the dog pound!) - he has a Russian accent as well.

Carole Cadwalladr is such a great journalist

Her article has been amended already today - she's not good on detail clearly;

This article was amended on 17 July 2022. Yvette Cooper is shadow home secretary, not shadow defence secretary. And the Labour MP who, in the liaison committee meeting, asked Boris Johnson for a “yes or a no” answer about meeting Alexander Lebedev without officials, was Diana Johnson, not Meg Hillier as an earlier version said; the latter asked a follow-up question on the issue.

And more jobs for friends

A peerage for Nadine Dorries?? Let that be true!!

Fascinating that you spend so much time pm that article without once addressing its the central point. Are you concerned at all about the links between Johnson and Lebedev which even he admits to?

Roussette · 18/07/2022 09:14

Labour tweeted this in May;
Labour would introduce a windfall tax on oil and gas profits to support households with up to £600 off your energy bills.

Labour were only proposing up to £600 for the poorest households?

As you well know, @Clavinova, that is not the limit of Labour proposals.

Are you OK with his visit to a former KGB Agent's palazzo

The palazzo is owned by the son - a British citizen.

Personally, I'd like to know why Keir Starmer didn't question Seumas Milne's appointment as Executive Director of Strategy & Communications for the Labour Party (October 2015 - April 2020);

And the Tories have given £400 off energy bills

That's £400 for every household - plus £150 Council Tax rebate for lower bands.

Labour were only proposing an average of £200 per household towards energy bills.

So £400 for every house that Sunak owns. Do you think that's remotely sensible?

Of course. He has to get his instructions from his paymaster find ways to fund the wallpaper.

So our caretaker Prime Minister isn't taking care and is concentrating on jollies and trying to defend his worthless reputation. All the while, we are paying him a fat salary and maintaining the property he is using as his party venue.

Isn't it time for the Tories to have the honesty to say that keeping him as caretaker serves no purpose whatsoever, is a total waste of money, and that practically anyone else could do a better job as caretaker?

It’s another seven weeks, most of it with parliament in recess. I honestly can’t get pissed off about it, it’s enough that he’s going. I’ll reserve my anger for the appalling quality of the proposed replacements.

This Ian Dunt thread ShockGrin

First question at the ITV debate is what is your one idea to help with cost of living. Not one of them has one, except to undo some of the things their own government has done.

Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss are unlikely to do Sky News leadership debate

They're said to want to focus on the MPs' hustings in the run up to the final vote on Wednesday

There's also concern that the two brutal debates so far have been incredibly damaging for Tories

I'm told that at the end of Friday's vitriolic leadership debate on Channel 4, Sunak turned to Truss and asked: 'Why are we doing this?'

Both questioned the point of the debates amid concerns about where they will leave the Conservative Party in the long-term

DuncinToffee · 18/07/2022 10:34

Team Truss source: "It is not the right time to be doing more debates when this part of the contest only has 358 voters. The broadcasters should stop squabbling amongst themselves. The C4 debate in particular was a massive mistake and candidates were wrong to take part in it."

It wasn't the broadcasters doing the squabbling

54isanopendoor · 18/07/2022 10:35

Johnson is speaking at Farnborough Air Show.
Is he drunk?
Not only his usual waffle but stumbling over his words quite a bit too...

Notonthestairs · 18/07/2022 10:37

It really wasn't the broadcasters squabbling. They must think we were born yesterday.

It is interesting that letting a little bit of light in to the process reveals only how poor the candidates are.

the80sweregreat · 18/07/2022 10:44

I know that the leadership debates have been terrible ( mostly ) and only any good if you have a say in the eventual outcome , but it's also good it's shined a light on how they want to move forwards and what some of them really think. I bet even Jeremy Corbyn was shocked that Rishi actually said something positive about him ! I know I was a bit!

Clavinova · 18/07/2022 10:47

Oh purleeeease!
Johnson himself has admitted to this! When asked by the Liaison Committee
"did you meet Alexander Lebedev in 2018 without government officials when he was Foreign Secretary, he said he did.

Why in god's name are you trying to pretend he didn't? You're being ridiculous. It is out of his mouth FFS!

That's not the question you asked me though is it? You didn't ask me whether there were any Foreign Office officials present at the meeting - you only asked me about Johnson's "security detail" at "the palazzo".

Definition:
What does security detail mean?
A security detail, often known as a PSD (Protective Services Detail, Personal Security...

Your question:
Are you denying he attended the palazzo without his security detail?

My answer:
No idea - one of Carole's links says this;
Neither the Foreign Office or the police were prepared to say whether Johnson had gone against protocol and travelled to Italy without security.

More from one of Carole's links;

The Met said it could not discuss Johnson’s security arrangements when he was foreign secretary. “We simply do not discuss matters of protective security of this nature. If we confirm or deny that officers went on certain trips with certain people, then it could impact or undermine our security stance and operations in the future.”

It's pathetic if anyone comes on here trying to pretend it hasn't happened. And it just shows you up big time.

Better luck next time with a different question (I may be free on Wednesday). My advice would be to drink plenty of water in this hot weather.

DuncinToffee · 18/07/2022 10:55

Clavinova, do you think it is ok for the Foreign Secretary to meet with a ex-KGB lieutenant-colonel without his security detail or Foreign Office officials, at the height of the Skripal poisoning crisis?

Yes or No?
