Don't be a snowflake, put on a brave face and get on with things, just like in the good old days

My gran had a hard life, she was a bright intelligent woman born at the start of the 20th century. She used to tell the story of her marriage, they got married on the Saturday and had a night away, granddad back at work on the Monday. She'd left her job on the Friday as he did govt job and a wife working wasn't the done thing. Well on the Monday morning she served him breakfast and apparently he sat back and said, "Now you can have anything you need you just have to ask." Well he came home from work and gran said, "I can have anything I need without asking, I've got my job back."

She had a hard life and of course the job had to go when she had several babies in rapid succession. He left her short of money, had girlfriends, moved away for work and left her wondering every week if any money was coming.

That's the world they want us to go back to.

Gran had a saying, if a woman was moaning about her husband she would say, "Don't worry dear, you'll get a few years peace at the end." Based on men dying younger her comfort was you'd get a few years without the abuse before you died.

Braverman calling Mordaunt woke.

The state of them. Where are the serious thinkers?

Where did she do that? Personally I think the obvious anti Mordaunt campaign might just blow up in their faces.

Notonthestairs · 17/07/2022 11:42

"My view of Penny is that she is woke, yes”, Suella Braverman tells @TimesRadio.

“I have no disrespect to her for her woke views, but I think we should call it out for what it is”

The comment underneath made me laugh.

DuncinToffee · 17/07/2022 12:05

It's always good to see Kathy Burke being retweeted

tobee · 17/07/2022 12:12

I can't see any light here at all.

Tories have an obsession with the past. For halcyon days that never existed. A fairy tale idea of the past.

itsgettingweird · 17/07/2022 12:23

It means the same thing when Tories say it. They just see it as an utterly awful terrible idea.

This comment on that Twitter link sums it up perfectly.

itsgettingweird · 17/07/2022 12:24

Oh btw that response was to some clarifying the meaning of woke.

L1ttledrummergirl · 17/07/2022 13:23

Both Tom and Penny were on bbc this morning. Tom was ok, I wasn't sure about his stance on Rwanda and think that needs a rethink.

Penny was given a much easier ride but was blinking wildly the whole way through. In my opinion either she has an eye problem going on or she has a tenuous link with the truth.

None of the other 3 could be arsed to turn up despite being invited which was a shame.

DuncinToffee · 17/07/2022 13:27

Maybe they were at the wedding leavers party at Chequers....

tobee · 17/07/2022 13:31

Mmm to be a fly on the wall there.

Actually, scrap that not good for my blood pressure

This is my concern too. The Mail is gunning for her again today, digging on her 'stealing' her former partner from his wife.

If I didn't know what PM has been saying/doing in the last couple of years (because I keep a keen eye on the sex/gender/self ID debate) and know that she is a lying liar and dissembler, I'd be feeling a great deal of sympathy for her.

Wouldn't back Mordaunt or Truss. Mordaunt faltered too much in the debate (and said a vasectomy wouldn't make her less of a woman)

I heard her say mastectomy - not vasectomy.

I really like Tugenhat
I think he's the most qualified in finance

I find Tom Tugendhat too sneery/supercilious.

In what way is Tugendhat the most qualified in finance? Rishi Sunak obviously has a financial background - Liz Truss (PPE Oxford/qualified management accountant) was Chief Secretary to the Treasury for two years under Theresa May.

BoreOfWhabylon · 17/07/2022 14:31

I heard her say mastectomy - not vasectomy.

That's what I heard too, except she mispronounced it as massectomy, which probably led to the confusion.

DuncinToffee · 17/07/2022 14:31

Liz Truss who was warned the Aus and NZ trade deals would shrink the country's farming and food sectors and still decided to go ahead with them (without parliamentary scrutiny)?

Scrutiny? What's that?

DuncinToffee · 17/07/2022 15:09

Tory environment chief Alok Sharma threatens to resign if the new Prime Minister abandons key climate pledges.

Yes that Liz Truss. The one who was a LD and backed Remain in 2016.

Carole Cadwalladr
Boris Johnson and the Lebedevs: how I exposed the prime minister’s defining scandal

Why is Cadwalladr suggesting that Lebedev named his pet Borzoi (Russian wolfhound) after Boris Johnson?
"There was so much that was already an open secret..."
"The fact that Evgeny owned a pet wolf he’d christened Boris"

Her link doesn't even back up her suggestion and Lebedev has previously explained that his wolfhound is named after Boris Yeltsin;

"my pet wolf, Boris, is named after Russia’s first democratically elected president (Boris Yeltsin), not my friend the Prime Minister"

Incidentally, the Borzoi in Lady and the Tramp is also named "Boris" (in the dog pound!) - he has a Russian accent as well.

Carole Cadwalladr is such a great journalist

Her article has been amended already today - she's not good on detail clearly;

This article was amended on 17 July 2022. Yvette Cooper is shadow home secretary, not shadow defence secretary. And the Labour MP who, in the liaison committee meeting, asked Boris Johnson for a “yes or a no” answer about meeting Alexander Lebedev without officials, was Diana Johnson, not Meg Hillier as an earlier version said; the latter asked a follow-up question on the issue.

And more jobs for friends

A peerage for Nadine Dorries?? Let that be true!!

Confusion? Why would she have a vasectomy??

DuncinToffee · 17/07/2022 15:22

Clavinova, do you think it is ok for the Foreign Secretary to meet with a ex-KGB lieutenant-colonel without his security detail or Foreign Office officials, at the height of the Skripal poisoning crisis?

Yes or No?

We watched with the subtitles on. We both heard her say vasectomy. Then the subtitles said vasectomy.
