Hurrah.

It could be done but what's the point - the normal leadership process will kick off next week and take a few weeks to run its course, in the meantime the new cabinet that has just been appointed can keep the lights on.

The point is that we can't have a lying, incompetent, lazy narcissist in power for one day more. It is ludicrous to say that the cabinet can keep the lights on - this includes people like Patel and Zahawi both of whom have allegedly told Johnson that he does not have their confidence as PM. To say nothing of a load of inexperienced nonentities like Cleverly. How is that conceivably a functional way to run a country?

And how can we deal sensibly with other countries when our PM is someone 60 of whose colleagues have resigned citing his lack of basic integrity and honesty. To say nothing of his late admission of extremely dodgy dealings with Lebedev. The likes of Putin must be laughing their socks off.

If all that is needed is to keep the lights on, we can do that infinitely better without Johnson busily keeping his nose in the trough as long as he possibly can.

One reason, I suspect, Johnson is being allowed to stay on as Leader is that some nasty, shitty little piece of legislation can be pushed through, just before the Summer recess, and it will bear his name only. I wonder what that could be…?

I seriously hope it's not the Bill of Rights Bill. That is potentially the most damaging of the many damaging things Johnson has done to this country, and that's saying something.

What boils my piss is that they were all ok with dodgy PPE deal to their mates, giving millions each month to multi billionaire media moguls disguised as covid subsidies, none stop parties on the tax payer, lying their arses off, reduced powers of the ethics and standards committee etc etc etc but apparently sexual harassment is the final straw!

Everything else is perfectly acceptable to them!

whynotwhatknot · 07/07/2022 18:53

i thought that @ladymil of all the things this was unacceptable to them

This is what has sickened me only now have they found a conscience & a backbone yet day after day they were prepared to come out & defend the indefensible, most of them should be in prison for fraud & corruption.

Suella Braverman for PM AT SuellaForPM
Hope • Security • Opportunity

I have to say that the Tory Leadership Contest is most definitely one of the best comedy series going. They have a new cast every 2 or 3 years and its high drama and entertainment. There is always a very 'classy' scandal and a moment of sheer cringe. Coupled with just pure laughs.

Suella is already delivering on my hopes and expectations. I think its a terrific opportunity for some light relief. And I find great security in knowing there will always be someone along to make you realise that actually you aren't as dumb as you thought you were.

Read her voting record.

She has no intention of affording anyone else those opportunities.

Absolutely. Sunak and Javid did what they did to cover their own backs, as have the rest of them. Who’s in the list of front runners to take over…Sunak and Javid There’s a surprise.

itsgettingweird · 07/07/2022 19:05

I think Mordaunt would be a very interesting leader.

Not because I like her or think she'd be great.

But because of her trans opinions.

If everyone refuses Labour because of their TWAW stance it'll be interesting when it's a PM with the same beliefs.

AmaryIlis · 07/07/2022 18:26

If you knew anything about him, including his work as DPP, you would know what arrant nonsense that is.

I know plenty about Starmer and his previous roles. However, I've seen nothing during his time as Labour leader that makes me think he is a potential leader of this country. I doubt he even believes that himself.

Rabbitholedigger · 07/07/2022 19:13

"Absolutely. Sunak and Javid did what they did to cover their own backs, as have the rest of them. Who’s in the list of front runners to take over…Sunak and Javid There’s a surprise."

Yeah. And those that quit leading the herd, can stay in the herd and not come back as far as I'm concerned. Self interest before country.

Those that stayed, thank god they did. They took flack for seemingly backing BJ but they have an important job to do to keep the country running above all else.

Imagine during a European war and Putin, if the defence secretary walked out. Ffs.

Ortega888 · 07/07/2022 19:23

Tories they are all the same this one leaves and another one equally as bad takes his place. Remember each and every one is corrupt and lying and are they all in this together for theme. Nothing will change. I am sick and tired of all the empty promises.

Gingernan · 07/07/2022 19:33

He's still trying to call the shots! I think he's banking on them all forgiving him and deciding he can stay.

I’m not sure it was even the sexual harassment that they were upset about. It was the way he came out and lied a lie that was utterly obviously a lie and could and was proven to be a lie by the records. They couldn’t defend that again….. but they wouldn’t have minded one bit had he not been caught again. If they actually cared about the sexual harassment then many MPs would have gone a long time ago.

Rabbitholedigger · 07/07/2022 19:41

"Remember each and every one is corrupt and lying and are they all in this together"

Well that's not entirely true, is it?

Notonthestairs · 07/07/2022 19:48

If they voted in support of Paterson, if they repeated the lies over the care homes during Covid or Partygate or Pincher, if they waved away concerns about Russian money/the Russia report and Johnson meeting Levedev privately, if they didn't care about the VIP fast lane contracts for friends of Ministers, if they dismissed the importance of the Ministerial Code etc etc then yeah they were - at the very least - willing to overlook corruption.

containsnuts · 07/07/2022 19:53

It doesn't seem to me like he even wanted to do the job in the first place. Now he gets to abandon all his responsibilities and go off to enjoy the rest of his life with all the perks of being an ex Prime Minister while the country is left in chaos.

Reigateforever · 07/07/2022 21:08

It was said on a tv program that he wanted to stay on for the summer as he was hosting a wedding party at Chequers.

Mrsstrange · 07/07/2022 21:39

I seem to be in a majority of one but I think Starmer is gorgeous, intelligent, honest and would make a fantastic PM. Britain needs brains and integrity to get it back on track. We’ve had the funny clown now let’s get serious. Britain with Boris as Pm is regarded as a joke by every other country.

Skodacool · 07/07/2022 21:40

Good riddance. If Johnson had come clean when Partygate first came up none of this would have happened. He prolonged it by denying, then lying. He asked for Sue Gray to investigate. Then he delayed her report because police were investigating. He even tried to suppress it because, ‘police have investigated’.
It was all his own fault.

pointythings · 07/07/2022 21:43

@Mrsstrange I don't think he's particularly beautiful, but he strikes me as intelligent and capable, and above all a grownup. He's wrong on Brexit and I think he should stop trying to appease the Labour Brexit nuts - they're a lost cause. But he's a sensible centrist and if he's a bit boring, well, the UK could do with a bit of boring after all the car crash politics the Tories have put it through.

Mrsstrange · 07/07/2022 21:54

Let’s face it, what has Brexit done for the Uk apart from its sovereignty. We’re in the middle of Europe and Britain wants to do it alone. Thank you Boris.

Strangeways19 · 07/07/2022 22:01

I don't watch the news much but the last few days has been mighty entertaining

I think he wanted it alright, but some kind of weird Churchill fantasy that had no base in reality with either Churchill or now. I gave him a slight pass 2 years ago as Covid was unexpected and a novel situation, but the incessant lying about all and everything since is just too, too much.

BJ is clearly academically gifted in some ways and has a certain charisma, but he is unable to translate that into anything of real substance or worth. I also think that he has a sense of entitlement that sits with a massive chip on his shoulder, as he is neither as rich or as grand as he would like to be.

Vikki69 · 07/07/2022 22:11

Why would we have to have an election?

Vikki69 · 07/07/2022 22:14

He was the chancellor....
