PMQs should be interesting.

The similarity with Trump is startling. I followed what happened with him since he was nominated and then became POTUS. He also clung on by his fingertips and look what happened there when he was actually voted out. 6th Jan Insurrection.
What on earth is going to happen with us. BJ won't go. He's hanging on in there whatever people think of him and however many resign.

I am sick to death of hearing tory MPs say 'he was elected by the british people and I stand by him'
No, he fucking wasn't.
He was elected by 23,351 of the british population. That's 0.03% and I doubt all of those stand by him now.

Rachel Reeves Shadow Chancellor was good on BBC this morning.

Yes, that argument is idiotic. We simply don't have a system where we directly elect a PM, and anyone who cast their vote believing they were able to choose who the governing party had as PM was sadly mistaken.

MediocreHRPerson · 06/07/2022 08:26

Rachel Reeves is one of the few Labour people who I think is genuinely sensible.

I don't think Boris is going to go on his own accord. Interesting times.

Oh jgw you naughty naughty thing causing carnage on another thread...

Which one?

itsgettingweird · 06/07/2022 08:30

Will Quince has now resigned!

newnamethanks · 06/07/2022 08:30

Reportedly a Tory MP said 'it will take an Iranian Embassy type assault to get him out if No 10'. Wouldn't surprise me at all. Oops, there goes poor Will Quince 👋

Roussette · 06/07/2022 08:31

I think of everything in simple terms... if the tory party are fed up with him as PM, why don't they not fill the back benches today at PMQ? Surely that will send the message they want? No braying support when BJ speaks.

Another resignation. Will Quince, Minister for Children. He was the one wheeled out to defend just a day ago.

twitter.com/willquince/status/1544583312353673217

In his letter, he obviously feels very aggrieved he was sent out to lie.

Notonthestairs · 06/07/2022 08:34

Ach, I'm pretty sure Quince knew he was dealing in lies - I bet he hadn't been assured of the truth, he'd just been advised they wouldn't be found out.

I think that’s much closer to the truth. Still it’s a pretty strong statement to others that they’re putting themselves in a vulnerable position if they choose to repeat lines fed to them.

AmaryIlis · 06/07/2022 08:29

Which one?

I was trying to find it too! Grin

Booklover3 · 06/07/2022 09:19

I think it was this one but I wouldn’t call it carnage so I could be wrong:

Notonthestairs · 06/07/2022 09:34

I'm wondering whether anyone is waiting to hand in their resignation just before PMQs or Johnson going in to the Select Committee.

TheABC · 06/07/2022 09:42

I've got the popcorn out, ready for PMQs.
There are no downsides here for those of us that loathe Johnson. Either he hangs on, despoiling everyone he touches or else he resigns, possibly taking down the party with him.

I am still surprised he is hanging in there. He could have resigned respectably after that COVID hospitalisation and gone off to the talk circuit as the Brexit hero. Can Chequers in the summer recess really make up for the next two weeks of stress?

countrygirl99 · 06/07/2022 09:43

I'm convinced JGW was responsible for the don't be nasty to Boris thread yesterday but would have been a name change. Either that or someone has studied her style.

vera99 · 06/07/2022 10:35

Don't be nasty to Boris !!! I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire - indeed I would gladly pay a tenner a litre for petrol to help him on his way. I thought Zahawi was better than this - he's debased himself to saying he believes Johnson tells the truth the whole time live on TV. Johnson is a pound shop, Trump, without the armed nut jobs to add menace who will have to be dragged kicking and screaming from No 10. Can he call a general election off his own bat hoping that Keir resigns soon and he fills the vacuum? That's the only strategy in him keeping himself in power that makes any logical sense. Corbyn would have been a paragon of virtue in comparison and probably cost us a lot less money as well. But hey hum we let an over-entitled brat smash up the organs of the British state just like when he was a student he smashed up restaurants and burnt 50 quid notes in front of homeless people. He is a moral monster who has not a single shred of goodness in his darkened troubled soul.

vera99 · 06/07/2022 10:42

Peston
Tonight’s meeting of the 1922 executive committee will be one of the most momentous in its 100 year history. It may decide to allow a new vote of confidence immediately - before recess - if Sir Graham Brady were to receive letters of no confidence from more than half the party.

Whoohoo!

Booklover3 · 06/07/2022 10:45

Lol woohoo!

"One senior figure on the '22 tells me that they now favour a delegation going to tell Boris Johnson that it is over, and that they'll change the rules if he won't resign"

twitter.com/jgforsyth/status/1544617641142370304?s=21&t=ZzEhbPqXyGdIopK_HjRnWg

He won't resign. They will have to change the rules and then Dorries and JRM will shout Cheat. They must think we've forgotten how they booted out May.

ClaudineClare · 06/07/2022 10:58

Woo hoo from me too. This is a long time coming, but so so sweet. When did we start these threads?

Notonthestairs · 06/07/2022 11:02

I think the Downfall threads kicked off in January!

TokyoSushi · 06/07/2022 11:05

I'm in an all day meeting but trying to keep an eye on what's going on through alerts. It looks like it's still going in the right direction but definitely has a feeling of getting Trump to leave the White House.

L1ttledrummergirl · 06/07/2022 11:12

I'm recording pmqs today as working. I think we'll all be watching it today.
It should be interesting.

Notonthestairs · 06/07/2022 11:17

So we are up to 15 resignations.

And now members of the 1922 committee are putting in their letters to Brady -

"NEW: Tory MP Tom Hunt, formerly a loyal supporter of Boris Johnson, has announced he has submitted a letter of no confidence in the PM

I think Nadine will chain herself to the front railings of no 10 in protest if Boris gets the boot!
