I do understand that the bloke, as well as being a lying bag of lies, is a total narcissist and an incredibly damaged person. However, at this stage how could anyone possibly think clinging on is a better look than just going? I know he has no shame but paradoxically he really does care what people think of him; he has a deep need for approval (thanks, Stanley) and his overall aim must be to go down in history and be remembered well. Instead he will simply be a laughing stock. Is it just total delusion? Does his need for power override everything else? Or can he simply not bring himself to give it up?
I mean, if this was your fella, at this point you would be very gently taking him by the hand and desperately trying to help him realise that the best thing he can do now is give it all up and have a nice family holiday together. Not that I hold Carrie in any way responsible, to be clear. I just can't see what possible positive outcome he think he gets now? It's like a Shut Up and Dance / Crocodile mash up where everyone but the protagonist can see that every single minute the show continues it is only going to get worse until he is finally outed as a peadophile by a hamster.
