The weird world of MN…

I am frequent visitor on MN but sometimes it feels like another world, examples include

  • being told to LTB because he ate the kids chocolate, comments included selfish, abuser and narcissist
  • you are not allowed to ask grandparents for childcare but equally fume silently when they don’t offer *everyone earns £100k per year
  • everyone kids are in a vast amount of out of school activities. Screen time is frowned upon *parents give them a vast amount of money for house deposits *you are expected to pay for your kids until they are way into adulthood but don’t expect them to visit you in old age
  • There is a huge amount of children with SEN and ASD even though they amount to only 1% of children in the population (this is not a judgement/criticism, more of an observation) *Many husbands work FT and are high earners but still should share 50% of the housework, if not LTB *husbands have a secret ‘hobby’ *all kids should have their own room and should not be expected to share.

I may need to visit with some more 😂

I know what you mean.

Everyone seems to know someone or be related to a narcissist, despite such a diagnosis being very rare .

So many with food sensory issues or crippling anxiety.

Honestly, this site has gone nuts. It was better about 5-7 years ago. It's gotten too big now and posters aren't as moderate as they used to be.

It's a real shame.

The troll hunters on Reddit make it really shit too.

Pippin2028 · 10/06/2022 09:15

I can't get over how everyone or their husband is on 100k ++ a year but they can never state exactly what this high paying job is as it's too outing.

Also, there are boards dedicated to women’s trying to get pregnant, yet everyone complains about parenthood. There are rarely any positivity about being a mother

I rememebr 1 thread where it was clear that so many people on here litterally cannot get their head around the idea that some people are poor, or what exactly that means!

There were so many comments like "well there's always money for treats" and "he's financially abusive if he's stopping you going on holiday". No matter how hard people tried to explain it to them they just didn't seem to be able the grasp the concept of the money simply not being there!

Sparklingbrook · 10/06/2022 09:18

I don't know whether MN is any weirder than the real world TBH. MN isn't just one voice. Take it all with a pinch of salt most of the time.

One thing I have noticed lately is using bullet points in posts has become quite the thing though. Grin

nomistake · 10/06/2022 09:19

Inheritance - you shouldn't expect it and your parents could gift all their money and assets to charity and you should just suck it up because its their right to do so.

In reality I think anyone would be extremely pissed off in that situation!!

When reading some MN threads and imagine how different they would play out if they were just normal conversations between friends.

To be fair I think that's just the nature of this kind of board - people come here to get help and advice on the issues they're having.

A thread about how easy they're finding it all and isn't motherhood wonderful probably wouldnt go down to well!

I think that's why I love Mumsnet. So many amusing posts. I always wonder who these people are in real life as I swear I don't know anyone like them.

Ragwort · 10/06/2022 09:21

The contrast between the 'how much do you spend on food shopping' and the holiday threads ... three or four overseas holidays a year seems quite normal. Hmm

The absolute shock that anyone chooses to iron clothes.

People can't make friends but any 'normal' suggestions like, find a hobby, join a local organisation or do some volunteering are sneered at.

Handsnotwands · 10/06/2022 09:21

Everyone’s got a cleaner.

We both work, full time, earn around the national average. There is no way on this earth we can afford a cleaner

Fuckthetories · 10/06/2022 09:23

Don't get me started on answering the front door...

And how every parent seems to know exactly what exam paper their child is doing, what exact percentage they need for a top grade, etc etc.

Some shit to the bull, man!

I think this is the only way to view this place, it is funny in a kind of unhinged are you for real kind of way.

Yes the (not) answering the front door is very strange. I can only assume the normal people that answer the door don't bother posting!

choosername1234 · 10/06/2022 09:26

The comment yesterday that a family on over £100k really wasn't that well off & deserved more government assistance Confused

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 10/06/2022 09:26

It’s a lot swearier than I expected!

packedlunches · 10/06/2022 09:27

I think there is research to show that a highly disproportionate amount of parents of children with SEN use Internet forums. It's a lonely existence most of the time and it's comforting to talk to strangers who "get it". That may account for so many people and their children appearing to be ND. I also read recently that it's estimated that it's more like 10% of society that are ND (I suspect higher). Many, many adults are undiagnosed.
There is still a bit of a stigma attached to being/having a child with SN. So people in RL tend not to talk about it or tell you about it so openly.

Apart from that I agree with all the rest of your points 😉

Fuckthetories · 10/06/2022 09:28

The amount of troll hunting/ journo hunting is spoiling it too. Like if you think it's fake, don't reply, whatever.

Noglassjustthebottleandastraw · 10/06/2022 09:29

Anytime someone posts about something health related like sleep issues or feeling tired etc then mn automatically diagnoses the peri menopause 🙄

SatinHeart · 10/06/2022 09:30

There's a whole load of names that come up again and again on the baby names board that I've literally never come across anyone using in real life. And I live in a fairly standard area of Southern England.

Without the trolls there would be no troll hunting. If you think it's fake report it.

Fuckthetories · 10/06/2022 09:33

Which ones Satin? I'm curious.

Oh and people who come on to say "I texted this then he texted that, what does it mean?"

Grow up and communicate properly. Call them, go see them.

ComtesseDeSpair · 10/06/2022 09:36

Only on MN do so many people supposedly have jobs requiring enough brainpower to earn them very decent money, whilst also being completely stupid. Somebody on another thread supposedly with an income of £100k upset and questioning why they can’t afford a nice house or nice things and then drops in that oh, they save £2,500 a month.

But I’ll be kind and assume they are a fantasist rather than an idiot
