@AppleKatie more emphatic versions will get you higher, remember it's American so the more hyperbolic the better! Then once you're in the 990s you can dial it down a bit.

I wasn’t on 992, i was on 990, not that this helped, eventually was just trying words similar to it and exploring Others that sounded a bit like it.

One clue from here based on a couple of 900+ greens got me a quick success!

Needed some clues from this thread today.

My first guess was the first word I heard as I turned on the radio before playing, it gave me green number 288. I tried lots of things that were a bit like 288 and managed to get into the low 800s that way but then got really bogged down and needed the thread. Actually now I have the answer I can see that 288 was quite a good one in that you often need it in order to eventually

914 is rather indirectly related - you might get somewhere by trying some antonyms, and then working from there.

I solved Semantle #72 in 57 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 2.16. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #32. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 21.64

Turns out I'm just as bad at the customised version but if I knew what they based it on it might help!
