I was similar to you. All the ones in the 990s link to those involved gaining the ???? of 993.

Target word common in this context, but its use has other meanings so you may expect it to be further down.

Woohoo! Two days in a row with no clues. Normally I’m picking over these threads like Miss Marple.

I was nowhere without this thread! I found the football clue most helpful as well. Before I started reading in desperation I was stuck with 224 and 417 as my best greens and I would never have got to target that way.

I got 967 on the 18th guess! Now stuck on 992, have put in lots of words that I think are associated that are coming up green.

I really hated this one. Can't tell you why, but when 'FOUND' flashed up I genuinely yelled 'Fuck you' at my screen

Quite fun today. Slow run through the cold words gradually getting higher similarity scores and not too much work once the greens started coming! Makes up for my total fail at the NYT mini crossword

This is another one where they have managed to restrict the meaning to a much less common one. I'm not sure how they do it but I'd like to see the game with a different dataset.

Yeah I found it frustrating. When I got 999 I ended up going cold again to finally resort to the thesaurus and get the word from there

Got it after I ended up scanning headlines for inspiration after the newspaper clue - ironically!

You seem to be coming at it from a different direction to most of us. Think of something else a person with a 998 has, something that can be used in other contexts.
