And so the madness continues! Here's our 9th thread to discuss, boast and rant about the game that is more pointless than Pointless, needs Masterminds to solve and will make Eggheads of us all, what with the amount of hair-pulling it induces!

That's annoying. I had 981 at guess 43 but didn't put the actual word in because it was 981 and lots of other words were already closer.

I solved Semantle #74 in 62 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 8.55. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #17. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 7.05. semantle.novalis.org/

I was a bit stuck at 994, but 981 helped

I solved Semantle #74 in 81 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 3.05. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #21. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 71.06 (997/1000). semantle.novalis.org/

@Doubleraspberry it's not just newspapers but it's a fairly specific use of the word and newspaper speak is a nudge to the right mindset.

I did it in 40, but spent far too long in the high 900s. First time I think I've got 999, which is usually a variant of the word, so wasted more guesses with as many varieties as I could think. Then I had a moment of inspiration.

Again it is very biased today, there are many more angles to this word that barely figure. In British English I reckon the word list would be different.

Aargh I had 993 on go 17! Thought it would be a sub-25. I’d discounted this word a few times, it was only because I gave in and put 989 in from the synonyms list (which I initially read wrong…).

A bit surprised at the order of the top 10 words. (And whats 990 doing?)
I think that's a rather random link to one of the meanings of 990. 4b in Merriam-Webster (deliberate choice of US dictionary, not sure we use that meaning in the U.K.).

Took me a while to find a green, but relatively plain sailing after that.

Yay! Yesterday and today I’ve been super lucky! This I know… it helps with the overall average and I know that soon I’ll be gnashing my teeth again…

999 was challenging because it’s not just a simple plural or tense or anything, so that was a bit of a speed bump.

Glad I didn't get 924 that would have thrown me right off, whats that got to do with anything??

Oh that was a bit frustrating! The path I took was rather a rerun of a previous word. But in the end I caved and looked at this thread and that got me over the line.

I solved Semantle #74 in 56 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 10.04. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #16. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 54.60 (991/1000).

An unintended cheat today. I had a go before work and then closed the browser and then came back to it and it forgot some of my guesses. So I had about 10 more guesses than the total.

Stuck on 998 for a whole but the Newspaper speak clue got me there.

I've got 595 - seem to be off down a blind alley though as I've tried words that are similar if it's a noun or a verb.
