Place for information, discussion, points of view, useful links and above all, a hope that this sovereign land can regain its freedom.

And if ever Mariupol is retaken ...

Helene von Bismarck @HeleneBismarck
German Defence minister Lambrecht said today that EU ministers need to talk about the possibility of stopping gas imports from Russia. Underlined importance of acting together (you think?) and says “there has to be a reaction” to the crimes in Ukraine.
Well.
We’ll see.

Flour is in! Down at the Aldi at 8:15 this morning to buy my rationed pack of flour - one pack per person. Still no oil or rice on the horizon
My German friend, this has been quite consistent for two years. Yes, it varies across Germany, but it has been tough.

Europe creeps to the far right and Putin has just done a leap frog and got there from the far left. The man is a traitor to his country's ideals. But we should all be aware.
As for the UK and our puppet government of get rich quick kiss every arse you have to, where is Murdoch leading us?
NZ We don't have angry middle aged white antagonists because "Because we've never allowed Rupert Murdoch to set up a media outlet here." (I may repeat this a dozen times)

DGR also Servalan

Yair Lapid - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Israel

It is impossible to remain indifferent in the face of the horrific images from the city of Bucha near Kiev, from after the Russian army left.

Intentionally harming a civilian population is a war crime and I strongly condemn it.

Some rapid back pedalling there.

PaperTyger · 03/04/2022 20:56

Scrolling leaves interesting article on Putin's childhood.

Speaking of wheat and flour, it seems Ukrainians make a special sort of delicious stuffed bun which can be savoury or sweet.

If the following report is accurate, civilians offered poisoned, stuffed buns to soldiers. Two died, and twenty eight had to be taken to hospital. Also, lots of soldiers were given poisoned wine and became very ill.

Two Russian troops dead and 28 in hospital after being POISONED by laced Ukrainian buns

One the one hand I admire the people’s stand and felt, “Good!”. On another feel concerned it could inflame the soldiers’ mistrust and hate of civilians. Those soldiers probably had felt comforted and tempted by ‘Mum’ giving them treats.

Yes, it is heartbreaking. And particularly disturbing also, is this from the same Guardian report you posted:
It is not only Russian soldiers Ukrainian women may have to protect themselves from. In Vinnytsia, a town in the west of the country, a teacher reported to police that a member of the territorial defence services dragged her into the school library and tried to rape her. The man was arrested.

I did think that! Guess you get bad apples in all walks of life, the issue in war is when it’s systemic.

Dmitry Polyanskiy - First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN

In the light of heinous provocation of Ukrainian radicals in #Bucha Russia requested a meeting of UN #SecurityCouncil on Monday April 4

WTF
Is he going to suggest that the Ukrainians killed that many people to make the poor Russian service men look like baddies.
Or is he going to suggest that Russia needs sanctioning in light of various war crimes?

PaperTyger · 03/04/2022 21:45

Apologies if it's been mentioned but apparently (twitter) a huge convoy of cars was in Berlin showing Russian flag's and support for Putin.

Ijsbear · 03/04/2022 21:45

every time you think the Russians have reached the end of their appalling propaganda, they top it. Again.

I wish I could shoot Putin and the Minister for Misinformation into the burning sun. George Orwell is turning in his grave.

George Orwell was just a wee bit out on his boundaries for Oceania and Eurasia. We'll see how far when the Hungary votes are all in.

Igotjelly · 03/04/2022 21:55

I can never tell if to some degree Putin and his cronies believe their own bullshit. Easy to believe it’s fake news when you’re safely holed up in your bunker.

Ijsbear · 03/04/2022 21:56

General consensus is that he really believes the West has been attacking Russia.

Seems the worms in his brain have been wriggling rather hard the last few years.

He's going to skip to line 6 of the script RTB posted earlier:

Russia's script of lies perfected in Syria:
1- dead civilians aren't dead
2- We don't shoot civilians
3- No civilians hurt while we were there
4- Someone else shot the civilians
5- Ukrainians shot the civilians
6- the civilians were Russians shot by Ukraine

And then demand that the UN intervenes to stop this heinous atrocity by Ukraine.Hmm

It's not so much throwing a dead cat on the table as climbing onto the table and taking a dump in front of all the diners. Very much, "And wotcha gonna do about it, losers?" The shock value is supposed to paralyse the audience.

Of course, once you're used to it, it's just tedious – although still disgusting.

PestorPeston · 03/04/2022 22:05

Waiting to follow the worms
Waiting to turn on the showers
And fire the ovens
Waiting for the queers and the coons
And the reds Ukrainians and the Jews
Waiting to follow the worms
Would you like to see Britannia USSR
Rule again my friend
All you have to do is follow the worms

I apologise to a lot of people about this almost quote

PestorPeston · 03/04/2022 22:09

I guess with the UN we need one or more of the ten non-permanent members to add an amendment.
Albania (2023)
Brazil (2023)
Gabon (2023)
Ghana (2023)
India (2022)
Ireland (2022)
Kenya (2022)
Mexico (2022)
Norway (2022)
United Arab Emirates (2023)
Looking at this lot to make a stand.

Re: rapes against women on their own side whom they are supposed to be protecting

Sadly this happened a lot in WE11. Americans, and British soldiers raped many allied women, as well as German women.

Plenty were not the officers and gentlemen we see in the 1950s and 1960s war films.
I have not linked to anything but it is easy to find more information on this.

@PaperTyger

I live in Berlin. Demonstrations in Berlin have to be registered in advance with the police and receive approval before they can go ahead. A demonstration consisting of a convoy of cars will have police cars at the front and the end of the convoy. That is, it should not be an uncontrolled situation. According to local Berlin papers, the stated aim of the demonstration was to protest anti-Russian discrimination that has happened here since the Russian invasion. For example, Berlin has quite a few state-run bilingual schools and one of them is Russian. There has been attempted arson of the school a couple of times already since the invasion. So I don't really blame people for protesting that. The newspapers here reported that at least one car displayed the Z symbol. That has been made illegal here, and the convoy did have police present, so no doubt they will be prosecuted. That said, Germany has a lot of Russians who have been living here for several decades now. Younger people of Russian background tend to get their news in German, whereas older people still get their news in Russian, sometimes from a local Russian language newspaper, but sometimes directly from Russia. There is apparently an age divide within the Russian community, with younger people opposing the invasion and older people more likely to have been exposed to Russian media and propaganda and therefore less likely to oppose the invasion. From what I see personally in the area I live, there are a lot of local Russian speakers working to help support refugees, in distributing food and household goods, organizing Covid vaccinations, helping with finding housing and so on.
EsmaCannonball · 03/04/2022 22:40

Now there are images from Hostomel of women's bodies with swastikas branded into them.

EsmaCannonball · 03/04/2022 22:46

I wouldn't complain if someone at the UN said to the Russian UN guy, 'Oh, just fuck right off, you fucking, fucking shameless shitbag liar,' and then they all queued up to punch him repeatedly in the head. But they'll just be a bit cross and tut at him again.

RedToothBrush · 03/04/2022 22:47

Kevin Rothrock @KevinRothrock
Moscow is demanding an emergency session of the UN Security Council tomorrow to discuss “Ukrainian radicals’ provocation” in Bucha (the town outside Kyiv where Russian troops slaughtered hundreds of civilians but deny it).

I think we are level 5 of the Kremlin script.

WeAreTheHeroes · 03/04/2022 22:47

Orban has declared victory in Hungary.

I'm horrified at the actions of the withdrawing Russian army. Appalling.

Cope Strela-1

Russian forces must have been worried about Ukrainian drones overhead if they were making decoy air defense systems.
