Ebeneezer Goode song

How did this song ever get approved back in the day Grin

I was 10 back then in 1992 and genuinely thought it was about an old guy and merrily had it on repeat singing “ eezer Goode eezer good “

I had it on a mix dance tape and had it on repeat and still know all the words off by heart .

So now when I’m listening to it on my old dance mix on I tunes whilst cooking dinner it’s so clear to me that the whole song is about ecstasy and it’s effects then the whole chorus is singing E’s are good Grin

The verses totally describe the E effect

Still love the song BTW , just wonder how it got approved back then
Also can’t believe it’s 30 years old - really making me feel oldSmile

@Spidey66

Go back another 10 years to 1982 and listen to John Wayne is Big Leggy by Haysi Fantayzi, which is about a cowboy attempting to have sex with a Native American but because his gun holder is in the way he has to take her from behind blush

The BBC censors passed it for R1 and TOTP but a couple of years later banned Relax!

@Graphista they were approved then as they remain approved now by the radio 1 / 2 playlist committee. Then - entirely white middle aged straight men deciding what was acceptable. Now - we not marginally different. But nonetheless everything that gets BBC radio airplay is very much approved. Commercial radio a little bit more flexible but within the realm of what’s acceptable to the advertisers and mostly subject to play listing.

I can’t believe that the Spice Girls went right over my head 😳

DGRossetti · 10/03/2022 07:54

How about Pulp's "Sorted for E's and Whizz" ?

Oh, is this the way they say the future's meant to feel?
Or just twenty thousand people standing in a field?

littledrummergirl · 10/03/2022 07:55

@littledrummergirlyou didn't happen to go to girl guides in a north London suburb did you?

No, I was in a village group at the time in the middle of nowhere. I wasn't alone then.Grin

Must have been a popular job for vicars wives back in the day then (also asked to leave......)

John Wayne in Lover's Lane, making whoopee with his squaw
But his bullet belt keeps a-gettin' in the way
It's making his life a bore
So she says to him, "Take off that thing"
It's getting right between us
Now listen, honey
I can't do that not even for you
My sweetness
Now Big John
If that's a fact, then how d'you propose we do our act?
If that's the way it's gonna be, get the hell out of my tepee

Now speckled hen
Just stop your squawkin'
Big Bad Rooster's doin' the talking
I know a trick we ought to try
Turn right over, you'll know why

He stands so high
It's enough to make any red skin cry
He knows what's right and he knows that God is with him
'Cause he is white, Big Leggy lives
J-J-J-J-J-John Wayne

Not even a thinly veiled reference Grin

I saw East 17's Deep mentioned, up thread. But what about Steam? Pretty sure that was about having sex, lots of mentions of cream and the last line...

Outside is raining but inside is wet!

🤣

Fizzgigg · 10/03/2022 09:13

Funny thing is all these songs for airplay no problem along with Like A Virgin etc but I was watching an old TOTP from the 90s the other day and they muted the word 'menstruating' from Faith No More's Midlife Crisis. Sex and drugs are all fine apparently as long as you don't talk about periods!

& of course him from Hazee Fantayzee was Jeremy Healy who was subsequently E-Zee Possee (everything starts with an E) and a massive shot in the race and club scene

AtillatheHun · 10/03/2022 09:26

Shot??? DJ!

Spidey66 · 10/03/2022 09:28

For your listening and viewing pleasure......

It's actually taking the piss out of cowboys/John Wayne, not Native Americans.

An explanation of the meaning.

Copenhagenoffice · 10/03/2022 09:42

We've got ezz are good playing in our combat gym class atm, makes me laugh every time! I was up to my ears in e back in the 90's, such a good time.

SantanaBinLorry · 10/03/2022 09:53

@Spidey66 - I play 1 dj set a year, this is on my playlist Grin
Its a so bad its good catagory track.

Spidey66 · 10/03/2022 10:03

@SantanaBinLorry It's annoyingly catchy! Shiny Shiny is good too.

Jeremy Healy was briefly married to Patsy Kensit, who seems to make a career out of marrying musicians!

SantanaBinLorry · 10/03/2022 10:08

@Spidey66

Shiny, shiny, bad times behind me
Shiny, shiny, sha-na-na-na!

An anti nuclear war song no less!

ToffeeNotCoffee · 10/03/2022 10:35

I'll always remember this. It was on the radio as I drove to my boyfriend's house. He's now my husband, has been for nearly 30 years.

I tried to sing along to the song, in my head at least. I though it was a pun on 'ees are good' Ebenezer Good.

I liked the line, 'go easy on old eazer he's a love you can lose' i.e. take care of your love and also no to many drugs or the party will stop permanently.

StarCat2020 · 10/03/2022 10:58

Leah Betts died from drinking 7 litres of water in a short space of time as opposed to the actual ecstasy killing her.

And yet water remains legal.

Yes, also ‘he’s the kind of geezer who must never be abused’

Helpful harm reduction advice in there!

I have a girl crush on Kate Garner in the video for Shiny Shiny. Beautiful eyes and abs to die for.
