How did this song ever get approved back in the day Grin

I was 10 back then in 1992 and genuinely thought it was about an old guy and merrily had it on repeat singing “ eezer Goode eezer good “

I had it on a mix dance tape and had it on repeat and still know all the words off by heart .

So now when I’m listening to it on my old dance mix on I tunes whilst cooking dinner it’s so clear to me that the whole song is about ecstasy and it’s effects then the whole chorus is singing E’s are good Grin

The verses totally describe the E effect

Still love the song BTW , just wonder how it got approved back then
Also can’t believe it’s 30 years old - really making me feel oldSmile

Of course. But the lyrics aren't "heroin is good" x 97.

Feministwoman · 10/03/2022 00:11

@NannyGythaOgg

Many of the people in charge back then were pretty naive. Others less naive but of the mind that it can't corrupt if the audience doesn't understand - as you say, as a child it went straight over your head.

The one that I was surprised that got through was Lou Reed 'Walk on the Wild Side' with the line 'even when she was giving head' but again, I just think no one picked up on it.

Lyrics weren't available to see as they are now, which is I think another reason some lyrics weren't picked up on

Lyrics were available, there were magazines that published them!
GeidiPrimes · 10/03/2022 00:15

Mr C of the Shaman was a top notch DJ

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 10/03/2022 00:24

@Titsflyingsouth

Sorted for E's and Whizz, absolutely my fave song about drugs.

"mutha, I can never come home again, because I seem to have left an important part of my brain somewhere in a field in Hampshire..."

My mate phoned home and left those lyrics on his parents answerphone. They were a bit concerned about how/why he was in Hampshire when they saw him an hour earlier in the Midlands......
BookkeeperBobby · 10/03/2022 00:30

Lol. Obviously very sorted.

I love that line, and also the one about getting tickets "from some fucked up bloke in Camden town" because they always were, really.

Graphista · 10/03/2022 00:50

Erm...who do you think "approved" them?!

The whole point of popular music is to be a form of creative rebellion against older generations!

That's been true since I think mid 1800's? Something like that!

In modern times more like the 1920's

Songs about drugs have been around for AGES too - again AT LEAST back to the 1920's

Lots of songs referencing sex, drugs and rock n roll. ‘‘Twas ever thus.

A phrase which is part tautology anyway - seeing as "rock and roll" is a euphemism for sex

and Madonna's "Justify My Love"

As I recall "like a prayer" was MUCH more controversial certainty in predominantly catholic countries

I still can’t get my head round top of the pops banning clothes and songs, yet happily having saville there presenting

Well yea, establishment hypocrisy at its finest! I still wonder which people he had what info on to get away with what he did so widely and for so long. He MUST have known "where the bodies were buried" and yet even since his death few "bodies" have appeared

Never so much as smoked a cigarette but it's impossible to enjoy pop music without drugs references

There are so many songs about other dodgy subjects that got through "the censors" as they aren't in touch with popular culture.

TonyThreePies · 10/03/2022 00:55
I was 18 at the time and about as 'square' as they come but I always knew it was about 'E'. As pps have said, the entire pop chart seemed to be dominated at that time by songs about E and raving.

Everything started with an 'E'
That used to be one of my fave tracks back in the day but now it just sounds a bit screetchy Sad
RobertSmithsLipstick · 10/03/2022 01:06

I love songs referencing sex, drugs and debauchery.

RobertSmithsLipstick · 10/03/2022 01:08

I love the relax video, and George Michael wanting my sex.

brokengoalposts · 10/03/2022 01:09

I was 24 in 1992, I was off my tits for most of the early 90's, ebeneezer goode was only for plastic ravers, we'd never have listened to it. I thought I was way to cool for that. The younger me would be appalled at the older me, lol

AlphaAlpha · 10/03/2022 01:16

@GeidiPrimes He still is! Very active and still DJs all over the world. He's playing at the Egg in April - SOMY all dayer and I've got tickets 😎

ImprobablePuffin · 10/03/2022 01:24

@SinisterBumFacedCat

Don’t remember the band but I always thought “let me lick you up and down, till you say stop” was funny “Cos’ tonight Baby, I wanna get FREEEAKY with you” like they were announcing the star prize on Bullseye.
This one was by Another Level A personal fave of mine
tolerable · 10/03/2022 02:35

crazy eh...from the mum whos toddler sang "im haww-nee,hawwwneee hawnee hawnee"unchallenged.(eyeroll)

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 10/03/2022 03:42

Alternative lyrics to Technotronic. I used to be heard saying,
“This beat is. This beat is. This beat is f*cking chronic” or “the same as the last one”

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 10/03/2022 03:47

Thinking of all the great tunes. Now going to bed with a Sweet Harmony by Liquid earworm.

Pass the Vicks ….

WiddlinDiddlin · 10/03/2022 04:08

OMG i haven't heard Short Dick Man since college c. 1996.

Hasn't everyone heard Golden Brown?

Tbh.. none of the lyrics of chart music bear close scrutiny really, it's all filth, drugs, depravity and questionable morals... that's why we liked it (and some of us still do :grin: )

Willowowisp · 10/03/2022 05:34

Lyrics used to be on the record inside cover or the cassette pullout.

Mumdiva99 · 10/03/2022 06:04

On Saturday night the show old Top of The Pops clips on BBC2. This week is 1991. Husband and I often get sucked into watching them....

The lyric Ì'm still shocked about is James -She only comes when she's on top.
Which gas now changed to 'sing' on the radio. I can't bring myself to sing the changed lyrics, but with 3 kids in the car I 'm too embarrassed to sing the original.

LightingCandles · 10/03/2022 06:09

Just marking my place halfway through reading this thread so I can come back after work and create my Spotify play list!

Thisisit2022 · 10/03/2022 06:14

@elQuintoConyo

Naughty, naughty, verrry naughty!

Does anyone remember Short Dick Man? Around '94. Pretty horrible although an alternative to all the Thong Song shite that abounded.

I had Short Dick man on my Walkman, my CD walkman and now my Spotify. I always put it on when I'm commuting and some spread-legged gentleman is occupying two seats because his testicles are obviously too large for him to put his legs together.
Charliesgotachocolatefactory · 10/03/2022 06:14

@clary

I worked at Smash Hits at the time and our USP was that we published the lyrics...we ran Ebeneezer Goode with the info that it was about Mr C's clubbing mates! errrrrr yeah...

I loved Deep tho, brilliant song. I mean it's about sex but so are lots of pop songs.

Were you Black Type? 🤣 I loved Smash Hits as a teen, have worked in communications for 25 years and have been known to drop in a bit of a style nod to Smash Hits in some of my less-formal writing because I loved it so.
JamieFrasersSassenach · 10/03/2022 06:39

@littledrummergirl

I got thrown out of politely asked to leave the girl guides by the vicars wife who ran the group when aceeed was accidentally on purpose played during prayers...
@littledrummergirl you didn't happen to go to girl guides in a north London suburb did you?
EvilPea · 10/03/2022 07:38

Lubeyboobyalt · 10/03/2022 07:43

I remember watching the chart show age 11 ish and my mum telling me not to listen as it was about drugs, and I looked at her like she was INSANE and said no look it's about that character

It didn't twig for me til I was about 21!
