How did this song ever get approved back in the day Grin

I was 10 back then in 1992 and genuinely thought it was about an old guy and merrily had it on repeat singing “ eezer Goode eezer good “

I had it on a mix dance tape and had it on repeat and still know all the words off by heart .

So now when I’m listening to it on my old dance mix on I tunes whilst cooking dinner it’s so clear to me that the whole song is about ecstasy and it’s effects then the whole chorus is singing E’s are good Grin

The verses totally describe the E effect

Still love the song BTW , just wonder how it got approved back then
Also can’t believe it’s 30 years old - really making me feel oldSmile

@Narutocrazyfox

There's a live TOTP performance where he says 'has anyone got any underlay???' and he later said it wasn't a drug reference, it was a rug reference 😂😂😂

That's my favourite ever fact about the song and I loved that performance when I was a teenager!

What was underlay?
ClariceQuiff · 09/03/2022 20:17

Underlay as in what you put underneath your carpet.

A joke based on 'drug reference' / 'rug reference'

sopebox · 09/03/2022 20:25

What do you mean by approved? There's no pop approval board

Songs about drugs weren't invented in the 90s

Gilead · 09/03/2022 20:40

Dexys midnight runners, dodgy band name!
Funny (strange) though, dd has to take dexys daily for narcolepsy.

Thisisit2022 · 09/03/2022 20:41

I'm pretty sure Channel 4 did late night premier sof videos too naughty or shocking for the likes of TOTP - like Michael Jackson's "Thriller", George Michael's "I Want Your Sex" and Madonna's "Justify My Love"

I never fail to laugh out loud at Chef's Chocolate Salty Balls...and at Christmas too! "You just burned my balls!"

Lou Reed's "A Perfect Day" is about heroin too.

thedarkling · 09/03/2022 20:45

@ShinyPikachu

My parents always bought me Now albums for Christmas or my birthday and I'm sure it was Now 20 that had Salt n Pepa's Let's Talk About Sex followed by Color Me Badd's I Wanna Sex You Up at one point.

My mum heard me listening to them and came storming into my room wanting to know where I'd got that "disgusting" music from. You should have seen her face when I told her she had bought it for me. Grin

I think I may have been Now 18? I remember something very similar!
thedarkling · 09/03/2022 20:51

It's sort of making sense why my parents turned off so many songs in the early nineties now...

thedarkling · 09/03/2022 20:53

@Aworldofmyown

Ebeneezer Goode was released around the time poor Leah Betts died from taking E. I remember there was a lot of upset over the song.
I remember very clearly having a talk in school after Leah Betts died. I've never touched any drug and I feel like that's where it stemmed from. Strangely averse since I'll quite happily drink anything going.
poorbuthappy · 09/03/2022 21:01

I loved that East 17 track....I wanna go deep baby...deep deep down. 🤣

LucyfurMorningstar · 09/03/2022 21:16

The 1930's were even worse!

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 09/03/2022 21:16

Plenty of earworms from this thread tonight!
However sitting here slightly shocked that dh doesn't know most of these tracks...

StorminaBcup · 09/03/2022 21:44

Do you remember Rat Pack, Searching for my Rizla

I can feel another rush coming on….!

Love it! I had a rat pack tape that was ace - funniest mc’s Grin

LivingDeadGirlUK · 09/03/2022 21:47

Ratpack 'searching for my rizla' only made it to 58 in the charts, that would have caused a stir on TOTP!

Aworldofmyown · 09/03/2022 21:48

Thedarkling it had the same effect on me. Never touched a drug, what happened to her was so sad.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 09/03/2022 21:53

I'd forgotten what tunes 'captain of the ship' and 'brothers and sisters' were, this is prob not what I should be doing to unwind for bed.

Northernsoullover · 09/03/2022 21:59

Starlight Vocal Band Afternoon Delight always makes me laugh. 1976.

clary · 09/03/2022 22:12

I worked at Smash Hits at the time and our USP was that we published the lyrics...we ran Ebeneezer Goode with the info that it was about Mr C's clubbing mates! errrrrr yeah...

I loved Deep tho, brilliant song. I mean it's about sex but so are lots of pop songs.

EvilPea · 09/03/2022 22:27

I still can’t get my head round top of the pops banning clothes and songs, yet happily having saville there presenting

MrPenguinsPoppers · 09/03/2022 23:28

@Dashel

Great song.

I never thought about the spice girls song, but now I am silly for not thinking the obvious. All those young kids singing along oblivious.

I think I was shocked when All Saints covered Under The Bridge. The original was amazing to start with but the meaning of drug withdrawal didn’t seem to go well with their young fans.

Still can’t believe some songs names like Eric Claptons cocaine

Every now and then MTV play the All Saints version as part of a ‘best ever love songs’ section. Always makes me chuckle. Sure if your love affair is with heroin it’s perfect. Someone spectacularly missed the point.

Also The Darkness song ‘Growing on Me’ is about genital warts.

alfagirl73 · 09/03/2022 23:41

I remember Frankie's "Relax" getting banned - but it kinda backfired cos everyone ended up buying it. In fact I seem to recall that a record getting banned was almost a sure fire way of getting it up the charts because people objected to being told what they could/couldn't listen to and would immediately buy the record in question whether they liked it or not.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 09/03/2022 23:46

Don’t remember the band but I always thought “let me lick you up and down, till you say stop” was funny “Cos’ tonight Baby, I wanna get FREEEAKY with you” like they were announcing the star prize on Bullseye.

elQuintoConyo · 09/03/2022 23:53

Naughty, naughty, verrry naughty!

Does anyone remember Short Dick Man? Around '94. Pretty horrible although an alternative to all the Thong Song shite that abounded.

littledrummergirl · 09/03/2022 23:55

I got thrown out of politely asked to leave the girl guides by the vicars wife who ran the group when aceeed was accidentally on purpose played during prayers...

BookkeeperBobby · 10/03/2022 00:00

Lol. Obviously pop songs are pretty much all about sex, drugs or both but yeah I can't think of another one that just repeatedly says one particular named drug is good, over and over again, and doesn't say much all else. It's funny OP, you're right.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 10/03/2022 00:04

No one remembers "Golden Brown" then?
