@EsmaCannonball

So a European intelligence official is claiming that Russian state security is planning to carry out public executions in Ukraine.

There are rumours within Russia about Putin enacting martial law and people are scrambling to leave.

Putin and his foreign minister are both using the stories about racism on the borders to claim that Ukraine is a Nazi state and foreigners, particularly from India, are being held hostage or as human shields by the Ukrainians.

Bastards.

The idea of public executions does not surprise me. The only way to keep control is to terrify the Ukrainian population.
jgw1 · 03/03/2022 17:15

@Roussette

Taking back control.

Did you know Keir had a beer?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 03/03/2022 17:15

He wouldn't have the economic or military wherewithal to invade any other countries. The Ukrainians have shown that they're not going to placidly accept occupation, so suppressing a country of that size will occupy most of the Russian army for years to come. Plus their currency will have been turned into monopoly money. Flat broke and a stretched and exposed army doesn't bode well for future invasions.

mybeautifulnewwashingmachine · 03/03/2022 17:16

@alltheapples you asked if I had a credible source about the US military funding in the Ukraine and I said I'd find the one I originally looked at - the below link is Gravitas WION which is asian based news and generally seen as credible and won NT awards - go to 1.33 and the journalist starts to refer to military aid from 2019. If you don't want to click you can search for "wion gravitas why is russia not winning in ukraine" in youtube (NB it is dated 28th so some of its contents will now be superceded). You said that you were worried it was fake news - hopefully you are now reassured it isn't

You can google the information the journalist gives and get even more insight.

This is an article from The Atlantic from 2019 which is extremely interesting I think which I found while looking for the wion report and worth a read too - again if you think this is fake news let me know and I will try to reassure you further:

@holliem91

I have been following all of these threads but not posted anything as I have no real knowledge to be able to contribute.

I keep telling myself I need to step away from the internet/MN but it's almost like I've become obsessed with following what is happening.

Is anyone else feeling so sick with worry? I don't want to be left alone at the moment, I have a constant sinking feeling, struggling to eat and sleep and can't shake the thought of a nuclear war.

I have a 2 year old and right now I'm feeling incredibly guilty for bringing her into this shit show of a world. I wish all this would stop. I wish the people with higher power would realise how this is affecting normal civilians who just want to get on with normal day to day life. Every morning I wake up and hope that there has been a ceasefire and that this would all just be over.

I wanted to start a new thread but feel there have been too many so far and don't want to be jumped on for scaremongering.

Sadly all this conflict and threat of nuclear war would have been going on whilst you were growing up and will no doubt be going on when our childrens children are growing up. Sadly there's always some crazed dictator or battle going on. For so long children in Northern Ireland couldn't even walk to school without fire bombs and tanks being common sights

@yoolia

He might be like the Queen, creaking on til nearly 100.

I think that is pretty unlikely given the state of him at the moment.

I hope you are right. Mind you, who will replace him?

Don’t know if you can see this Facebook post. I don’t have Facebook on my phone so can’t link it so if you can’t see it search for Yulia Pudlo. She is a Ukrainian living in London and describing her hometown Kharkiv before the invasion.

It’s so sad. It’s just a reminder these cities are not just a war zone, these are people’s homes, their livelihood, civilisation. She says they will rebuild Kharkiv. I really hope so.

It becoming more and more apparent that we are living in a broken world. The human race has learned nothing from its past, and hasn’t become nicer/kinder/more considerate over the centuries. It's an ongoing cycle of selfish behaviour.

holliem91 · 03/03/2022 17:20

@katem98 I do exactly the same in regards to screenshotting peoples reassuring posts on here, it helps for a short while then the full blown anxiety comes back.

The unknown has always scared me, but this is a whole different level of the unknown.

Hlglu56 · 03/03/2022 17:20

Well that didn’t work…

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 03/03/2022 17:21

I can see it, @Hlglu56. 59 universities in Kharkiv. Wow.

RedToothBrush · 03/03/2022 17:21

Max Seddon @maxseddon
Putin speaking to his security council.

"I will never abandon my conviction that Russians and Ukrainians are one people [...] but the way the battle is going shows we are fighting neo-Nazis."

He claims Ukraine is using civilians and foreigners as "human shields."

Essentially Putin is responding to the international criticism of the huge civilian toll of the war in Ukraine – even from allies – by saying it’s all Ukrainians Nazis who did it. “Our soldiers and officers are trying to prevent civilian casualties and suffer losses themselves.”

Significant that Putin is publicly addressing the Russian casualties in Ukraine. Families are getting payouts of as much as 7m rubles (about $65,000)

“Russian soldiers and officers act courageously, like real heroes. Our armed forces completely understand what they are fighting for and know they are right…giving their lives to save their fellow soldiers. In battle our armed forces and the Donbas militia show mass heroism.”

Putin: “The special operation in Ukraine is going according to plan and in full compliance with the timetable. All tasks set during the special operation in Ukraine are being accomplished successfully.”

At the end, Putin held a moment of silence for Russia's victims.

This time, the security council was held on Putin's Zoom and they didn't even show any of its members – it was just Putin speaking in a room for a few minutes.

Julia loffe @julieioffe
Putin: "I will never abandon my conviction that Russians and Ukrainians are one people."

I welcome your NATO takes at this time.

Indeed.

NATO is a pretext. Its a complete red herring. Its a pile of bollocks.

holliem91 · 03/03/2022 17:22

Thank you @yoolia your posts are really helping at the moment.

EsmaCannonball · 03/03/2022 17:23

As people are talking about student exchange programmes, I knew a black student who was studying Russian and who was strongly advised not to do his year in Russia as there was an outbreak of racist murders there and off-the-scale racism. Russia has its own far-right problems.

The First World War was “ The war to end all Wars”

Then came the Second World War, and of course all the others in between, and now this one..

It is a fundamental flaw in humans as a species.
They cannot coexist happily together, or in peace.

mybeautifulnewwashingmachine · 03/03/2022 17:26

@alltheapples I am re attaching the links for the civil war which i posted upthread, because you said you couldn't open and I have been away from the thread for a couple of hours so not sure if you did in the end.

To anyone who didn't see what I wrote first time round, these are about the civil war in the east of Ukraine which has been going on for years between "russian speaking" separatists and Ukrainian forces, I think, I am not an expert, they are quite hardhitting videos in my opinion, the first is a Guardian report from 8 months ago about the state of the front line in eastern Ukraine and second one is a ViCE report from 2014 - I am not guaranteeing these sources and leave you to form your own views

(around 8 months ago) (2014)
DrBlackbird · 03/03/2022 17:26

The site is being over run by people posting Russian propaganda that is demonstrably false

Hard to know if there are bots or bloggers paid to post pro-Russian sentiments on MN or just regular folk with particular ‘anti-west’ whataboutery beefs/agendas for whatever reasons.

Russian paid trolls and bloggers were found to be active on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Stitcher, YouTube, and stand-alone websites. These accounts masqueraded as regular citizens and organizations from a wide variety of political orientations or from no obvious political orientation at all, but the central aim was to create a new front in a long-term competitive strategy designed to undermine US institutions.

Not a long shot to say that we’ve seen some of that here given that it’s a well established political strategy. It is interesting to think how insidious and effective this strategy is given that a) we’re suspecting either some bots or paid bloggers here and b) how these insidious comments might sway some posters?

oakleaffy · 03/03/2022 17:26

@YouSayYesISayNo

I too don't get why Ukraine should compromise Confused. If France invaded the UK would it be reasonable to suggest that the UK should compromise and just hand over London and the east, leaving a Scottish/Welsh (and the bit in between) Western UK as a new country.

That would be ridiculous. Or what am I missing?

Damage limitation.

Or the rest of Europe and USA get dragged in.
That inevitably will be WW3 and Nuclear ☢️ war.

Notonthestairs · 03/03/2022 17:27

"NATO is a pretext. Its a complete red herring. Its a pile of bollocks."

Absolutely.
