I would say that that is propaganda but it's possibly much closer to the truth (we'd like to hope) than say images of the invading Russians being welcomed into Ukrainian towns and cities with open arms (although that too may happen...). But if the Russians got hold of intel that say the Ukrainians had bombed a hospital (even if an accident) they'd likely use that for their own 'look what monsters the Ukrainians really are' propaganda narrative.

I guess it's accentuating the positives and minimising the negatives for your own side.

A closer to home example (WW2) within the UK - not only were there lots of deaths as people tried to get into Bethnal Green Underground Station when the sirens went off one day, but also there was the Balham Tube Station disaster which caused the deaths of some sheltering from overhead bombing. Those disasters were kept from the public as it would have impacted morale and negated propaganda indicating that we were winning in our fight against Germany!

*Orwell's use of allegory [in Animal Farm] effectively conveys his key message: unchecked propaganda will lead to ceaseless injustice for the masses. Without being well informed, anyone can be manipulated as easily as the people in Stalinist Russia or the animals on the farm."

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/03/2022 08:55

I guess it's why people are asking for verified sources for information to do with the invasion reported on here. Otherwise, you could be being fed a load of misinformation propaganda lies which don't reflect any truth (other than that of a deluded megalomaniac!).

They should also investigate why a man with known links to Russia was given a free pass to review British defences.

@Alexandra2001

Rumours are vehicles out of fuel and breakdowns, plus other factors

IMVHO the bigger concern is that despite it being on world view for days now it has not been under large scale attack…tells us something about what the Ukrainians can and cannot do ATM

the Russian military machine is so screwed? really, so how come they are flattening cities in the South and East?

We don't now for sure the casualties but they will be in the 10s of '000s.

A British soldier in Mariupol got out a phone call to a journalist yesterday, he said the bombardment is 24/7, everything is targeted and also indiscriminate, he rang off saying he didn't expect to have any further communication.

Not sure why you’ve replied in the manner that you have but I certainly didn’t say the whole Russian machine was screwed.

My response was in reference to the single convoy, and it is significant that the Ukrainian’s can’t or won’t attack up.

I’m in agreement with the comment somebody else upthread that no, the whole Russian operation is not chaotic, maybe in places, maybe at times yes, but not overall…and looking at the bombardments they are reverting to old style tactics which is not a good thing at all for the civilian population.

DGRossetti · 03/03/2022 09:02

Johnson even refused to act on Russia Today, it was taken off UK TV by the EU and sanctions.

Interestingly it made fuck all difference what the EU-free UK would have liked to do. RT is basically under EU jurisdiction and that's that.

Another area where for all the bluster, the UK just has to follow the EU lead. (As noted on R4 today).

A second round of talks is reportedly set to take place today. A Russian negotiator said a ceasefire was on the agenda, but Ukraine has said Moscow’s demands are unacceptable and Russia must stop bombing Ukrainian cities before any progress can be expected
(Guardian live reporting)

This hasn’t been confirmed tho, year there is a heavy Russian presence however latest report was that Ukraine still had the cities under control, unless that’s changed since being confirmed?

Various drives in my area to collected food and sleeping bags plus first aid supplies etc, to go on lorries to Ukraine. I'm wondering if the people who really need these things will actually receive them? Might certain areas be overloaded with similar items? Would it be more helpful to donate cash to a particular charity or fund instead?

DuncinToffee · 03/03/2022 09:09

James Waterhouse @JamWaterhouse

🇺🇦Ukraine's military chiefs:

  • Russian troops are moving south to link up with the "stuck" 40 mile convoy, bypassing cities where there's heavy fighting.
  • Russia's navy is intercepting civilian ships in the Black Sea
  • Large Russian vessels are heading towards Odessa

BBC reporting that children in Russia are having a lesson in schools today about the danger NATO poses to them and why the liberation of Ukraine is justified :(

Apparently pimps from Germany have travelled to the Polish border and are offering Ukrainian women 'free travel and accommodation.' Bastards, bastards, bastards! It's horrible that there are people who see all this as an opportunity.

I haven't caught up with this thread yet, but I want to thank the poster who recommended the Channel 4 documentary. It is fascinating. Some people here say Putin has gone mad or is ill and that is why he has invaded Ukraine, but personally I don't think that is the case now. If the documentary is to be believed, this war is Putin being Putin.

I think so, especially with all the red tape at Dover.

This is a good one as gov are matching donations

£20m so far and will increase the more who donate

Yes, I'm worried about bottlenecks and physical goods not getting where they need to go. I'm trying to work out the best targeted local charity to donate money where it will most likely benefit those in dire need directly. But I'm feeling quite confused!
