What the actual fuck is that madman thinking?

On the Media Show on R4 last night, one Russian expert said the difficulty in analysing the war on Ukraine was that no one could understand Putin’s motivation for this war as it made no strategic sense on any level. Making it difficult to predict what he’s going to do next.

Also on that show was a quote from a Russian woman saying "of course reports that Russia bombed Kharkov were wrong because they said they never would, so they wouldn’t". That is deeply worrying about the level of denial/media control within Russia.

If Kyiv falls today, I want Zelensky to leave both the city and Ukraine. He needs to live as a symbol of hope for the Ukrainian people of the possibility of regaining their country.

HelpMeHiveMind · 03/03/2022 08:02

Out of interest, what are more knowledgeable poster's thoughts re: Abromovich desperately trying to sell up everything he's got (Chelsea, his house etc.)? Is he trying to wipe the slate in hopes the UK government take pity and don't sanction him, or is he shedding ties in order to get out of UK? There's less visibility of what other major oligarchs are doing. I have wondered what / if any awareness some of them have had about all this when it was still in the planning stages...

Apparently a billionaire has put a bounty on Putin's head for a million pounds.

Unfortunately, anyone who can get close to Putin doesn't need a million pounds.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/03/2022 08:03

How would those in Russia with enough clout to stage a coup (and take Putin out), manage it without being detected though. I'm assuming even his close allies' homes/offices will be bugged and followed?

anotherperson1 · 03/03/2022 08:05

Sorry if I missed it but what happened to the 40 mile long convoy the other day? Have they reached their destination, what are they actually doing?

Roussette · 03/03/2022 08:05

Navalny is also very brave. Amazed but also in awe that he continues to fight against the Russian State from his prison cell. Surprised that his phone has not been confiscated

I doubt very much he has a phone in there but I imagine he has a line of communication somehow. He has been in prison hospital, no idea if he still is.

TheABC · 03/03/2022 08:06

At some point, Russia will win control of Ukraine. Putin can keep throwing troops and resources at this and he has the incentive to keep going. The bigger questions for me are:

  • Will we be able to get aid convoys through to Ukraine's cities before they starve?
  • Will the EU tolorate more economic disruption and stop buying Russia's gas and oil (there have been mutterings about that).
  • what happens if the war spills over into a neighbouring NATO state?

It hardly moved yesterday apparently, reported by BBC. Seems to be a bit stuck.
anotherperson1 · 03/03/2022 08:11

That's good to know. Wonder what's going on with it. Maybe don't know the route? Mechanical issues? Wanted to scare the country with the optics of such a large convoy?

Newrunner29 · 03/03/2022 08:13

I wonder if anyone can help me understand propaganda? Is propaganda outright lies so claiming something that just not happening by doctoring a video or photo or is it things that happen to show something so for example the man and women giving Russian soldiers tea and phoning their mothers? I thought it was first example, because yes it shows Ukrainains in a certain way but of its happening surely its not propaganda?

Blinkingbatshit · 03/03/2022 08:18

@HelpMeHiveMind - Abramovich is very simply trying to get what he can out before he is hit with sanctions and it is forcefully taken from him. Don’t fall for the ‘charitable motives’ pr stunt, no other motive than saving his cash from being seized…

valerianaofficiana · 03/03/2022 08:18

@RedToothBrush what an excellent post! Given the known corruption levels it's safe to assume that lack of maintenance can be expected across Russian military machine, spares make a handy money spinner.

Rumours are vehicles out of fuel and breakdowns, plus other factors.

IMVHO the bigger concern is that despite it being on world view for days now it has not been under large scale attack…tells us something about what the Ukrainians can and cannot do ATM.

You honestly think gullible dumbass citizens only reside in countries with relatively tight media restrictions? If you're looking for an idiotic/brainwashed voxpop they're easy to find wherever you are in the world. Any major city, 10 mins max. Actually I used to live in China, and found average urban Chinese people slightly more clued up on geopolitical goings on and the reasons behind them than the average Brit.

the Russian military machine is so screwed? really, so how come they are flattening cities in the South and East?

We don't now for sure the casualties but they will be in the 10s of '000s.

A British soldier in Mariupol got out a phone call to a journalist yesterday, he said the bombardment is 24/7, everything is targeted and also indiscriminate, he rang off saying he didn't expect to have any further communication.

I would say a combination of lies, fake pictures/videos, taking things out of context and focusing and promoting a specific point of view, completely ignoring anything else that doesn't fit your narrative.

I would say both sides have a level of propaganda going, the Russians probably much more.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/03/2022 08:36

Propaganda is the dissemination of information—facts, arguments, rumours, half-truths, or lies—to influence public opinion. Deliberateness and a relatively heavy emphasis on manipulation distinguish propaganda from casual conversation or the free and easy exchange of ideas.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 03/03/2022 08:36

Unfortunately, anyone who can get close to Putin doesn't need a million pounds.

He needs to set up a global crowdfunder. He'll have billions within 24 hours. I'd gladly donate 😃

So is the video of Ukrainain people giving Russian soldiers tea and ringing their mothers classed as propaganda? I wouldn't say it is from ur explanation? Thanks for it

Funny isn't it? we can send a man like him to the Lords but can't accept Ukrainian refugees as it would go against "security advice"

"OSCE Chairmanship, OSCE Secretary General
NEWSROOM
OSCE mourns death of National Mission Member of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine
VIENNA/WARSAW 2 March 2022
VIENNA/WARSAW – Maryna Fenina, a national member of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM), died in shelling in Kharkiv yesterday, 1 March.

OSCE Chairman-in-Office and Foreign Minister of Poland Zbigniew Rau and OSCE Secretary General Helga Maria Schmid extend their most heartfelt condolences to Maryna’s loved ones, as well as to the SMM as a whole:

“Our deepest condolences and sympathies go to Maryna’s family. Maryna was a valued member of the SMM team, and our colleagues in Ukraine remain in close contact with her family to offer our support.”

“Maryna was killed while getting supplies for her family in a city that has become a war zone. In Kharkiv and other cities and towns in Ukraine, missiles, shells and rockets are hitting residential buildings and town centers, killing and injuring innocent civilians – women, men and children alike."

"Despite repeated calls from across the international community, and from across the OSCE, the unprovoked military operation against Ukraine continues. We strongly condemn the increased shelling in urban areas centres causing death and injury to civilians and reiterate our call on the Russian Federation for an immediate cessation of hostilities and to engage in a meaningful dialogue.""
