@TheSillyMastiff thank you for answering. So just to clarify, if he’s found guilty as long as he never sets foot in any country that’s a member of ICC he’s pretty sweetly set?
Pretty much yes. So if he stays in his Siberian bunker till the end of his days he's as safe as houses. Same applies to any Russian convicted.

Stay in Russia = nobody from the ICC can touch me.

www.thejc.com/news/news/im-staying-for-those-who-cannot-flee-pledges-kyiv-chief-rabbi-2rTJXEnrM2aCK4B0uZJJ79

"The Chief Rabbi of Kyiv has pledged to stay and care for those who are unable to flee as Russian forces continue their assault on Ukraine’s capital.
Speaking to the JC, Rabbi Jonathan Markovitch revealed a woman aged 101 and another aged 104 are among the elderly members of the community left in the city under siege from Putin’s armies.

He also explained he is helping “everybody who needs help”, Jews and non-Jews alike, including opening up his synagogue basement to anyone seeking shelter.

Rabbi Markovitch said: “Most of the people that can run, they are not staying here. I understand them.

“But we are here to help those people that cannot get out from the country. We are here, alone, with those people that cannot leave.”

While feeding those attending the synagogue, the Chabad rabbi and his volunteers are also delivering food to those who cannot come. This includes an estimated 1,000 members of the community aged 80 or more, some so infirm they are unable to leave their homes at all.

He said: “We have 200 people in the community who cannot walk because they are seriously ill. They cannot move. They stay in their bed. We feed them.

“One lady, she is 101 years old, and the other 104 years old. They are at home because they cannot walk. They are at home and we bring them food.”

The synagogue is there for everyone in need, he said: “We help not just the Jewish people. We are helping here today everybody who needs help, because our synagogue has a basement and it’s the only basement in all the area, and a lot of people who want to hide when there’s panic, they come to the synagogue, and they have shelter.”

Rabbi Markovitch is determined to keep providing a Jewish life: “We have a kitchen and we are doing kosher food, and give it to all the people who need it. Shabbat of course, and all the services, we have. But I must say we don’t have lessons like it was before the situation. We just have the praying.”

Urging Jews around the world to help, Rabbi Markovitch says the community urgently needs money: “We need supplies. We need to buy food. Just for food. Food and water. That’s all. We can still find food, but we understand that in a few days all the stores will be empty. But now we can buy it.”

Rabbi Markovitch has served in his native Ukraine for more than 20 years. In 1972, his family emigrated to Israel where he served as a major in the army. He moved back to Kyiv with his family in 2000.

In 2020, the Ukrainian parliament awarded Rabbi Markovitch its Medal of Honour in recognition of his important contribution to public life. "

@Feelingthepinch22

If Putin finally gets Ukraine it's going to cost billions to repair it.. Why is he doing this, Russia won't be able to pay to build it back up... The ukranians will have nothing to return to whatsoever.. It's just going to be a wasteland the way things are going... It's just heartbreaking to see this beautiful country & it's people torn to shreads....

This wasn't the way it was supposed to happen.

He thought this would be over in days and the Ukraine Govt would bug out and the people would accept a Pro-Russian regime in its place.

It's been a gross miscalculation in his part. He overestimated his own army's capabilities and will to fight and underestimated that of Ukraine.

He didn't anticipate (who could of?) the unprecedented extent of sanctions (Switzerland/Germany Shock) of European nations and how quickly they implemented them plus the military weapons they supplied to Ukraine.

Now he's trying to salvage what he can and if that means the obliteration of Ukraine then so be it.

He has to find a "win" from this.

Right now he's incredibly dangerous. He's hemmed in and isolated from international support and the Russian economy is in free fall. His closest Oligarch allies are bleeding wealth. The Russian people will soon start to see a massive impact on their incomes and potentially freedom (if martial law is imposed).

Never underestimate what a wounded animal will do to survive.

Sometimes cornering your enemy isn't a good strategy. If you don't have the strength or resolve to put them down, leaving them bleeding without an escape route leaves them with only one option which is to put everything they have left into an adrenaline fuelled counter attack.

@BreadInCaptivity

Interesting article by Dr Pippa Malmgren here:

drpippa.substack.com/p/circuit-breakers-to-stop-the-conflict?s=r

As Barack Obama alluded to back in 2016, we need to be realistic about what our core interests are and what we're willing to go to war for.

We would go to war in the face of an existential threat to our own survival; we won't always be willing to do so to maintain democracy or the independence of a foreign country.

This is a horrific, unjust and evil war. But there are people demanding simply that we "Do Something" for the emotional payoff, regardless of the results. If that's their logic then why don't they join the Ukranian International Brigade? Because they're essentially demanding that our leaders risk nuclear holocaust based on the same motivation.

Sergey Radchenko has also written that for that reason, NATO involvement / no fly zone has to be excluded.

The time to prevent this war was a long time ago. Now, deescalation is essential and anything else is catastrophic.

I’ve been following these threads but haven’t yet commented. I strongly suspect Zelenskyy has been modelling his social media campaign and appeals to the west on Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya’s handling of the situation she’s faced in Belarus since 2020. Tsikhanouskaya has been incredibly effective in harnessing social media and using it to launch appeals for public action that have been surprisingly successful in Belarus, which in some ways is harsher on its protestors than Russia.

Tsikhanouskaya has just launched a new “mothers union” via her Instagram. She’s appealing to Belarusian and Russian mothers to demand to know where their sons are really being sent and why, informing them that Putin is lying to them and tapping into traditional Belarusian and Russian brotherly sentiment towards the Ukrainians. Her mother’s union is providing Belarusian and Russian mothers with advice on how to demand information as to why their sons are being called up while putting themselves in as little danger as possible. It’s all very calm and non political, just appealing to concerned mothers.

From CNN:

A Western intelligence report indicated that Chinese officials, in early February, requested that senior Russian officials wait until after the Beijing Olympics had finished before beginning an invasion into Ukraine, US officials said Wednesday.

US officials broadly view the report as credible, but its particulars are open to interpretation, according to one source familiar with the intelligence. Although the request was made around the time that President Vladimir Putin visited Beijing for the opening ceremony of the Olympics — where he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping — it is not clear from the report whether Putin addressed the matter with Xi directly, the source said.

Western intelligence officials warily watching Putin’s buildup on the Ukrainian border at the time had anticipated that Putin might delay any military action until after the Olympics to avoid angering China.

After Putin and Xi’s meeting, Moscow and Beijing issued a joint statement declaring that their partnership had “no limits” and condemning NATO expansion — a key pillar of Putin’s justification for attacking Ukraine.

That statement has elevated Western concerns about a burgeoning alliance between China and Russia.

Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington, said, "The claims mentioned in the relevant reports are speculations without any basis, and are intended to blame-shift and smear China."

CNN has reached out to the Russian embassy in Washington for comment.

The New York Times first reported the existence of the report.

NATO is a defensive military alliance that exists to defend its members, it will not attack, hence it won't get involved in Ukraine. Russia knows this.
The larger NATO gets the better for peace in Europe. Had the post 90s expansion not taken place, Russia would have been picking out the small European countries one by one and we would have had a war in Europe long ago.
Listening to Putin's speeches, he seems to be hugely influenced by couple of Russian philosophers who argue that every nation/peoples have a 'life-force/energy' and that the West, particularly the Anglo Saxons, have depleted theirs and 'must be replaced'. All a bit woo.
The man lives on a different planet🙄

brogueish · 03/03/2022 06:40

Many thanks again for the informed and helpful posts. The situation in Ukraine is heart wrenching and unbearable, but the tone here is keeping my full on panic at bay.

I can’t see how Russia can come back from this. Will it become like North Korea, largely isolated and existing in a parallel reality to the rest of the world?

valerianaofficiana · 03/03/2022 06:44

If Putin falls out of the window whilst making a sandwich and his generals make about-face on all things Ukraine, Russia has a chance of recovery, to put it simply.🤓

brogueish · 03/03/2022 06:52

That’s what I mean. I can’t see how Russia can come back from this, unless there are major changes in leadership, and there’s no realistic hint that I’ve seen of that happening. Although happy to be corrected.

BreadInCaptivity A very moving twitter feed from Navalny who tweeted that whilst in detention.

That man has done everything to stand up to Putin over years. He has been poisoned with Novichock, attacked and beaten up, imprisoned, thrown into labour camps... yet he still has a voice.
His vid on Putin's Palace and Putin's corruption is absolutely gobsmacking. This is a long version, there is shorter footage out there.

There were 20million views of this video in less than a day and 92 million in the first week.
A brave brave man.
