I'm getting tired of this fascistic policing of thought and opinion which is becoming increasingly prevalent in the UK and elsewhere.

I agree with you. I expressed an opinion. Keir Starmer did the policing, presumably in service of party unity.

Ghastlyghoul · 02/03/2022 23:31

I’m glad the Mash piece provided a little bit of light relief in these darkest of days. I loved the bit about whether the examiners would take Armageddon into consideration when it came to DDs GCSE grades. And poor Rufus getting devoured by a giant mutated rat. They really got the essence of MN staples spot on.

TheSillyMastiff · 02/03/2022 23:32

I think right now a level of anxiety is normal, but please do not let it consume you.

The reason NATO are being so adamant about not entering Ukraine, is because they know they can not endanger hundreds of millions of civilians. They just can't.

Also if you are here on the British isles, and a NATO conflict begins, we have somewhat of an advantage of being an island. Nobody can amass 100,000 troops on our borders and storm in. We would see them coming from miles off by land and by air. We have an exceptional Navy hence why it's the most funded branch of the armed forces, it can defend us, along with the Royal Air Force and the Army.

Do not fret over nuclear war, it's not going to happen, it just won't. I think someone will put a bullet in Putin's skull before he gets close to that "red button". His government and economy is being destablised by the West, the grumblings are there, oligarchs speaking out, other public officials. For every one that speaks you can bet there's ten agreeing in silence.

It will be ok for us here. All we can do sadly right now is sit and watch, the people of the Ukraine need our support, they know we can't come but knowing the world is on your side is one hell of a morale boost.

RedToothBrush · 02/03/2022 23:32

I am, however, very very concerned at the unfolding genocide thats happening. And we need to start calling it that.

The food situation is the most worrying thing at this point.

Damnloginpopup · 02/03/2022 23:33

From stern to concerned...next level I think is miffed isn't it? Or is it peeved...

It's not bikini black alpha for sure.

Thank you for your input throughout these threads RedToothBrush, many of us are really pleased to have your input (esp people like me who are prone to anxiety)

alltheapples · 02/03/2022 23:37

If you are in the UK, please do not be worried about war. Our issues will be increasing petrol and utility bills and some other prices rising. It will affect us, but there won't be a nuclear attack. I think that moment has passed.
It is clear the Russian army is in chaos. It may win cities in Ukraine, but really they should have taken all of Ukraine by now. The fact they haven't shows how disorganised and weak they are.
It is very difficult to really win against a resident population determined to fight. Even if you occupy, there will be constant acts of sabotage and attack. The Ukrainians are incredibly brave.

I'm so, so grateful for many posters on this thread. Honestly, I haven't contributed much but reading your comments have kept me sane(ish).

Thank you ❤

This is a shitshow, I hate the fact that humans are capable of doing this to other humans and I don't mean the poor guys who don't know why they're even there.

Shuuu · 02/03/2022 23:44

Sadly I can’t see a way out for Ukraine. Unless the west intervenes which they most certainly won’t. Can anybody explain what happens if Putin is charged with a war crime?

Feelingthepinch22 · 02/03/2022 23:46

How will the sanctions hit the middle & working class Russians? Will their standard of living change incredibly? Will it be enough for a huge revolt? And in Belarus too?

starfro · 02/03/2022 23:51

Russia's economy will soon collapse with these sanctions. Their infrastructure is reliant on the West. They will be almost completely cut off. They can't fly planes, their IT systems won't work etc etc

They cannot occupy Ukraine, nor install a puppet Government. There is too much anger. City warfare has the potential to go on for months. The USSR couldn't win the war in Afghanistan, so Russia certainly can't in Ukraine.

I don't see how this ends, bar two scenarios:

  1. Peace talks with a few concessions from the Ukrainians so Putin can declare a victory at home.
  2. The complete bombardment and annihilation of Ukraine

It's all so sad.

Graffittiunderpass · 02/03/2022 23:53

Watching CNN now and an urban warfare expert is saying that the worst thing a military force can do is fight a war in a walled city, because the inhabitants can and will create a hell scape.

thepiratequeen · 02/03/2022 23:58

Placemarking. Can't believe it is on number 6 already!

FOJN · 02/03/2022 23:58

There are multiple reports of further negotiations today but I can't find any news about the outcome, has anything been reported yet?

Absolutely. It's very, very difficult to remove defenders and clear a building let alone a street, block, city....the more damaged the harder too. Look at hue during the tet offensive in 1968, Stalingrad in 1943, Berlin 1945 even. Not to mention Syria and Afghanistan. BUT Putin is likely to go in with thermobaric weapons and other stuff if conventional artillery doesn't force a surrender. Or even from the start. I don't think there is likely to be a reliance on his infantry alone to do it. Massive morale difference and it sucks up and obliterates a huge number of the attacking forces.

So Russia whilst a signatory of the Geneva convention isn't a signed up member of the ICC. So...nothing unless he steps foot in a country where the ICC operates then he can be arrested and detained.

Same applies to any russian military officers that are convicted of a war crime. So junior ranks can't be prosecuted because they are simply "following orders" but the Senior Officers can be as they are the ones on the ground giving the orders to shell civilian populations!

Last I saw they were happening tomorrow now but it's been oddly quiet
Shuuu · 03/03/2022 00:21

@TheSillyMastiff thank you for answering. So just to clarify, if he’s found guilty as long as he never sets foot in any country that’s a member of ICC he’s pretty sweetly set?

RedToothBrush · 03/03/2022 00:26

Tonight shaping up to be a bleak one.

4 or 5 very large blasts in Kyiv. One experienced war zone reported descibed two as the biggest he'd ever experienced.

Early reports are they were centred near the train station which had been still working allowing exit from the city. Many cars were lined up waiting for trains apparently.

Expecting the news to start looking really bleak tomorrow.

Feelingthepinch22 · 03/03/2022 00:36

If Putin finally gets Ukraine it's going to cost billions to repair it.. Why is he doing this, Russia won't be able to pay to build it back up... The ukranians will have nothing to return to whatsoever.. It's just going to be a wasteland the way things are going... It's just heartbreaking to see this beautiful country & it's people torn to shreads....
