Unbelievable to think that a few days ago the world was starting to look more positive..ye we find ourselves on a fifth thread discussing the horrors of the war in Europe. An unbelievable change has happened to the world we live in.

Some incredible firmed posts have been written, informing, discussing, and occasionally derailing. Let's hope the news is more positive by the end of this one.

@Damnloginpopup

Also reports of a large number of ex-SAS and paras are headed that way.

Both are unconfirmed obviously

Why post something that may or may not be true? Genuine question.
Damnloginpopup · 02/03/2022 04:42

Because I believe both to be true (to some degree)
from somebody who has been accurate on everything he's passed on to me so far but put a rider on it as i haven't had independent verification that I regard as concrete as yet.

I think that posting rumours of any kind is unwise at best and irresponsible at worst right now.

ClaudineClare · 02/03/2022 05:00

The second part of what you have posted does seem to be in a few news sources.

Yeah, a few tabloids are carrying it, but I've seen no 'serious' sources as yet. And I doubt we will see any reference to the former.anywhere mainstream 😉

Finding some hopeful stories within a grim situation. Older story (28th February) in the Guardian online of Polish Mums in Yorkshire organising donations for refugees. It started as a Facebook shout out and now they've got enough clothes, bedding and medical supplies to fill three 26 tonne lorries.
A local farmer has loaned them his barns to help them organise resources.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 02/03/2022 05:56

how on earth do they get the bbc and other reporters out if needed?

@MrsLargeEmbodied

how on earth do they get the bbc and other reporters out if needed?
Not sure. I’m worried at some point it will be too late and they’ll be trapped. That point may already be here. The bbc can definitely throw money at the problem, hire a driver and car to get to a border. But that relies on the roads not being blocked my massive traffic jams and broken down cars. And also relies on not being hit by a missile en route.
Gingerwarthog · 02/03/2022 06:06

@MrsLargeEmbodied

No idea. They got out of Afghanistan but I assume that was on aircraft. Hopefully they have pre-planned escape routes and contacts. Does anyone on the thread have journalistic experience and know how they can get out?
WeQuestionEverything · 02/03/2022 06:15

They normally get given safe passage. It’s not in Russia’s interest to shoot up journalists, at least deliberately.

MarshaBradyo · 02/03/2022 06:22

@FOJN

I'm not convinced NATO is the real reason for the invasion either. I take the point about NATO countries starting conflict in countries for the purposes of regime change but distance was no barrier to our interventions. Turkey has a border with Iraq and Syria but there are no NATO countries bordering Afghanistan or Libya.

In Europe once you go beyond Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova you have Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania who are all NATO members as are Greece and Turkey. Finland is not a member but I believe it was being debated today and Norway is already a member. Poland are no fans of Putin so if we wanted to launch an attack on Russia it could easily be done from there or from Turkey but we haven't because it's not something NATO have ever intended to do.

I've re-read Putin's speech this evening and in addition to being full of lies there is heavy emphasis on the strength of the old USSR. I really think he has ambitions to reform it.

Putin seems so committed to this vision - to take back what he feels is his that I question NATO expansion part too. Without it would we still be where we are?

I also wonder about Afghanistan withdrawal and how much that emboldened next move - without that still where we are

I also agree with pp that harsh sanctions are necessary, not the no fly zone though

MarshaBradyo · 02/03/2022 06:24

@Damnloginpopup

From a friebd. "Between the defenders of the city should be quite a few foreign volunteers, meanwhile. RUMINT has it, the ‘most famous’ of these is the Alpha Group, led by a Briton, ex-SAS. Supposedly, they have recovered the hydroelectric dam in a pitched battle with the Spetsnaz, back on Friday"

This is unverified, pt

This is good to hear, is it ok to put on here not sure if origin of fighters would be sensitive info (I know it’s only mn but would friend be ok with it shared)
PearPickingPorky · 02/03/2022 06:31

I'm amazed at the bravery of those journalists. Usually they're sitting on a nice studio in London, then suddenly they're in a basement in Ukraine or ruining for cover from air raid sirens.

I saw one of the women reporters had a "Press" vest on, but I can't imagine it's in Russia's interest for journalists to be able to report the truth of what Russia is doing, so why would they (Russia) not hurt them?

Oh Jesus this is all we need

I'm hoping Biden means with Sanctions and not by other means.. otherwise it's going to lead to all out war.

It's all horrifying what's happening, and just want to thank those on these threads for rational discussion during these worrying times.

Damnloginpopup · 02/03/2022 06:37

Yeah, I'm not sure where he got the info but asked me if I knew of them (just in a general chat and news swap. He is in Warsaw and getting very different info in general but also looks specifically in different places due to his varied interests. And watching Russian TV which he says is like Monty python right now!) Nothing classified, we aren't a couple of secret agents or anything 😁

Say for instance putin succeeds in his mission to take Ukraine. How long realistically can he continue with all these sanctions in place? What would he do next?
Wondering this too.

Fair enough if he heard it in the press - was more if he had direct info as stuff gets picked up from here a fair bit

Gingerwarthog · 02/03/2022 06:47

@PearPickingPorky
I thought that - it's not in their interests you would think to shell hospitals or damage holocaust memorials but it's happening.

This is awful Sad

Probably a silly question, but why can’t the Ukraine just launch an aircraft and bomb the convoy to smithereens before it reaches Kyiv?

BigHuff · 02/03/2022 06:50

The guardian has a map showing the location of missiles strikes - a few near Lvov. What happens if the Russians accidently go over the border into Poland?

I think that would mean NATO would get involved immediately..
TokyoSushi · 02/03/2022 06:53

Morning folks. So it seems that the convoy is still there, still waiting, for something...

BigHuff · 02/03/2022 06:55

Also, on the subject of escalation/de-escalation - that the US and Europe appear to have chosen a path of escalation (or at least, not chosen a path of de-escalation) means they must believe there is something they can achieve by following that path. Perhaps it is a chance to oust Putin, or maybe just to economically cripple Russia as much as possible. Or maybe the US arms industry needed a boost.
