So here we go. Four days in and the third consecutive thread on the conflict in Ukraine. The last two threads are a credit to the members of mumsnet. Who knows where thread four may find our world?

Thank you all.

The UN is riveting watching this is what the Ukrainian representative just said

if putin wants to kill himself, he doesn’t need to use nuclear arsenal - he has to do what the guy in Berlin did in 1945

dreamingbohemian · 28/02/2022 15:58

Yes I agree @Igotjelly -- a resolution of the Ukrainian question. Very chilling.

ClingClingDin · 28/02/2022 16:03

I would like to see Putin and his network overthrown, a modernised Russia and friendly close relations between the EU, Russia and other EE countries that are not in the the EU yet. I'd quite like to see a post Putin reformed democratic Russia as part of the EU.

Notonthestairs · 28/02/2022 16:03

Putin and Macron just spoke for 90 minutes.

Doesn't look Putin is ready to back down: he said a deal "is possible only if Russia’s legitimate security interests are unconditionally taken into account."

Those interests include:

– recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea
– demilitarization and denazification of the Ukrainian state
– ensuring its neutral status

Ukraine said it was open to neutrality, but hard to see how they agree to the rest after all that's happened.

Putin "stressed a settlement is possible only if Russia’s legitimate security interests are unconditionally taken into account [...] At the same time, it was noted that the Russian side is open to negotiations with Ukraine and expects that they will lead to the desired results."

I think Putin has completely misjudged the modern world and how connected and visionary people are capable of being (Brexit and everything else notwithstanding). He's a dinosaur.
Let's hope for the dinosaur's extinction ASAP.

Where can I follow/read the UN proceedings?

If this is the outcome it would be little short of amazing. I think it's possible. Won't be smooth, but possible.

Watching the UN meeting. Russias spokesperson claiming that the attacks on Ukrainian civilians are not by Russians but actually ukrainians.

I've just watched that.

Complete gaslighting.

It's the the Ukrainians. All the hospitals etc that have been bombed are fake news. All those shot have been done by criminals released from prison and handed weapons.

I'm not sure what's scarier. The fact they say these things or the fact they think well believe it.

Jesus. Who's buying that BS? Putin and his cronies couldn't lie straight in bed.

We're not the target audience, the populace who don't have access to other news sources or general social media are the audience.

Of course gaslighting works as a tactic. Look how many people come to MN with an enquiry about how they can fix something about themselves and how hard it is for them to learn that the problem isn't what they think it is and they're being gaslighted or the subject of coercive control.

False flag claims are well established as misinformation and disinformation tactics.

All countries populations have at times fallen for - and continue to fall for whoppers of the highest order. And you don't need to look too far to find one.

Igotjelly · 28/02/2022 16:22

Expected to be a second round of talks which is actually pretty positive news.

I'm so pleased to hear this and also hopeful 🤞🏼
ChimChimeny · 28/02/2022 16:25

Two things...

  1. The Russian stock market is closed until 5March (the telegraph)
  2. Where is spain in all this?? They've been very quiet...

Not sure if this link has been posted. I hope Netflix doesn't cooperate www.thetimes.co.uk/article/russian-netflix-ordered-to-stream-state-tv-channels-klsgqmq5j?fbclid=IwAR22t7ZsZSwCWkS57h4-3jIJmG_HE5FGjTOTIsolocTR7quvlZV59HJjYWY

Russians struggling to pay for their Netflix accounts. If anything is going to piss you off this is it!
Thank you for a moment of light relief. It’s very welcome during these disturbing days.
Tigersonvaseline · 28/02/2022 16:27

Wow that's big stuff isn't it? Stock market closed? I think people will be getting pretty f off with Putin??

Re Putin's concern about legitimate aggression, he's the one whose being aggressive meaning Ukraine has to shore up it's defences even more so now

Pernot165 · 28/02/2022 16:27

Fair point.

God it's frustrating.

From what I've heard, that's not the Russian people who are quite used to working around state censorship.
